But in North Carolina, that is the case for a house that was built out of hemp.
It's reportedly the first ever "hemp house" permitted to be built in the U.S. The owners say last month's cooling bill for the 3400 square foot home was only about $100.
That's because of the thermal capabilities of hemp. The couple also says it only cost $133 per square foot to build the house, using industrial 'hempcrete.'

I did some searching and there's a bunch of additional pictures of the house at: http://www.pushahead.com. It seems this design firm has some really interesting healthy/eco building ideas. I wish I could afford one of these...

thats great so long as some dumb ass doesn't try an smoke your house. I know I know You can't ge High off hemp but that won't stop some of the YoYo's I know from trying. i do think it's bad ass though. maybe one day I can build one with solar cells and all so I will never be on the grid again.

bailey78, you and your neighbors can get off the grid the day you or someone in your neighborhood builds a methane fermenter to produce methane from the community's bio-waste stream for use in a Biogas Micro-Turbine Generator, which can power that community. Also, there is a new sustainable fuel cell from Bloomenergy being tested in California that is about two or three times the size of a Rubik's Cube. You can hold it in your hand, and it stingily uses a fraction of the Methane that a standard internal combustion engine generator would use. One Bloomenergy "Energy in a Box" is powerful enough to power a modest house in Europe. Two will power most US homes. Walmart, UPS, and other major companies in California are using the devices. One company that has 3 acres of solar panels on their building's roof, is using the Bloomenergy "Energy in Box. They report that a few of these boxes in a small cabinet produces more power 24/7/365 than three acres of Solar PV panels. They are touting it as the best way to eliminate the power grid. Yea! Either of these ideas are a great way to decentralize the Nation's power system.
Say goodbye to Centralized power and light. Say hello to sustainable energy. It is coming on strong though we must get these ideas in everyone's hands asap before Centralized Power builds all of the new massive grid systems that they want, which will cost billions that they want US to pay for, which also destroys pristine views of country, and the technology is already obsolete. It is DEAD already. It is not needed NOW. Centralized Power simply doesn't know it yet. We must stop Centralized Power from wasting OUR tax dollars to build monstrosities that transmit unsustainable Dirty Power.

This is a great reason why conservatives should embrace industrial hemp, but most people just assume that hemp is the same as marijuana because of the similar looks. Hemp is one of the most versatile plants on the earth today and can be used to make anything from plastic....to well a whole house. I really wish people would wake up!
