Mayor Bloomberg Says Not Building Mosque Near Ground Zero Would "Compromise Our Commitment to Fighting Terror with Freedom"

It is unfair to blame all Muslims for 9/11 and building a Mosque in that same area is not "anti-American." In fact, as Bloomberg pointed out in his speech, it is what America is supposed to be about.
I especially like the part when he said:
“If we say that a mosque or a community center should not be built near the perimeter of the World Trade Center site, we would compromise our commitment to fighting terror with freedom. We would undercut the values and principles that so many heroes died protecting. We would feed the false impressions that some Americans have about Muslims. We would send a signal around the world that Muslim Americans may be equal in the eyes of the law, but separate in the eyes of their countrymen. And we would hand a valuable propaganda tool to terrorist recruiters, who spread the fallacy that America is at war with Islam."

Building the mosque would be consistent with stated American values, but the tradition of hypocrisy also runs pretty deep in American culture. The next decade or so will be decisive in whether America is viewed historically as simply a bigger version of Australia (that silly movie with Nicole Kidman) or a place where ideals in fact evolved beyond empty cant and iip syncing.
If the economy is going to revive in the near future, the American Challenge is to give truer substance to what we were taught in elementary school. Opportunities need to be real and we have to look at ethnic and racial bias without flinching and say that, yes, it's ridiculous.
It should be clear enough that America contains within its borders a number of potential emerging economies. Developing Asia, Developing Latin America, Developing Africa and Developing Eastern Europe. If you look carefully, these systems exist domestically. The frontier is inside, and "emergence" is what happens when disillusionment gives way to a felt sense of hope at the end of the tunnel.
