In a televised address to the nation from the Oval Office, the president said America had paid a huge price for the war begun by George W Bush to topple Saddam Hussein.
"Tonight, I am announcing that the American combat mission in Iraq has ended. Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country," he said.
Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki hailed the restoration of sovereignty to Iraq: "Iraq today is sovereign and independent. With the execution of the troop pullout, our relations with the United States have entered a new stage between two equal, sovereign countries."

I suppose you missed where I said "IF the Iraqi people are prepared". I'm not assuming they are, but I'm betting they're more ready to take charge than many assume, otherwise the military wouldn't be pulling out. At any rate, there will still be quite a large contingent remaining in Iraq for the foreseeable future as I understand it. The U.S. is apparently stepping down from a lead role and adopting a supporting role as I see it. I'm quite certain we wouldn't be doing that if there were no Iraqi leadership to take the lead role.

Its finally over...who would have thought we'd see this day come. Obama finally delivered on his campaign promise.
Now if we can get the Afghanistan war over too. Then we could get back to working out the problems in our own country.

It's not over. Saying on television "the war is over" doesn't make it so. There are 50,000 troops in Iraq -over two divisions- and twice that number of mercenaries.
He can 't keep his promise. So he is fudging it and hoping the public won't notice. - 1 year ago

No war has purpose if it is without intent to prevail to win. . . no matter the cause or cost.

But not all wars which have been fought with the intent to win have had acceptable purpose.

Then grab your rifle and head out to Iraq.
If not, then shut up.
