Before we all go back to victory gardens in the back yard we should first consider how to feed the billions of people who continue to breed out of control across the world. Also be prepared to go back to the days of spending winters eating salt pork and boiled potatoes out of the cellar.

Yummy snow maters. Most people that want to go back to the good old day's never lived in the good old day's. I grew up on a farm and we were damned poor and grew, raised or shot just about everything we ate. It sure the hell wasn't the kind of lifestyle most people are accustomed or capable of.

I find most peoples response to concerns about overpopulation to be comparable to asking libertarians to explain exactly how in detail they would dismantle the government. Lots of idealism and rhetoric but not much practical guidance.

China managed to put the population in check, but not before they got to the point where they would need 6 more planet earths to bring their people up to a Westernized standard of living. Just not enough kool aid to go around. Mother Nature, I am sure, has a few tricks up her sleeves not yet revealed to address the issue.

Let's see..... I am reminded of that old song "Friends of the Fetus." advocates "right up to the moment of birth." Shall we just go forth and populate???? Then watch folks starve to death? Or maybe Soilent Green. We certainly don't want to displace indigenous people except in Iraq when they are squatting on our oil. And we only displaced the ones we didn't kill so we could happily drive around about to church on Sunday in our freshly washed gas guzzling Suburban Assault Vehicles. All thing are connected, brother. Or as my Indian great grandfather used to say "Stupid fucking white people." My Islamic friends say, "There is no God but God."

I may be the only one to think this, but I don't think we should grow organic foods on a large scale. First of all, it is not efficient. Organic crops tend to produce less produce, thus we would need a lot more resources to keep up with the demand. On a large scale, organic farming will produce a shortage in the vegetation needed. For the longest of time, we have used organic farming to try to sustain ourselves, and often times we faced famine.
I'm not saying that I support Monsanto. If they are forcing farmers to grow the companies product, I am against it. However, I believe we do need to look into the benefits of farming with pesticides and genetically modified produce. Just because something has come into contact with pesticides, does not mean it is automatically dangerous.
***
I have a question on the topic of GMO's: what is so harmful about them?

You've got 30 pages at this link to give you the information. And organic does give better yields over time as opposed to industrial agriculture that yields less or equal to organic over time due to soil nutrient depletion and overuse of nitrogen fertilizers that also cause dead zones due to run off. GMOS also promote monoculture and the killing of biodiversity. And pesticides are not beneficial to agriculture, only to the chemical companies making them. They are toxic and a threat to our water quality and health. Agroecology, biodynamics, integrated pest management, and sustainable agriculture are already being used in more than just backyards and gardens, and the benefits to the environment and health are substantial. This is not just about getting the quick fix, this is about employing agricultural methods that will take the future into account. Fossil fuel intensive industrial agriculture that only concentrates on mass production of monocultures for profit cannot sustain this planet's people.

It's a good question. As I understand it, GMO is not unhealthy necessarily by itself. It's more to do with Monsanto's more than questionable practices.
On the organic produce thing, there is a model call biodynamic farming that incorporates diversity, seasonal variety, soil nutrition, organic fertilizer and a whole host of other elements, that can be very efficient and healthy.
When big businesses are allowed to dominate though, these other more intelligent options are left behind. It is left to us to create community groups that can ensure ethical practices and fairness to farmers as well.
As consumers we need to be prepared to pay a little more as well as demanding morally sound sources for our food.
This is a conversation worth having and one to share with friends too.

Yeah, but after a few months reading his negative comments you find out what you're made of => brick or straw, so he has his uses. He's very negative about engines being able to run off a mixed fuel of steam-catalyst-explosion of compressed air as if it's rocket science or something. Hates gravity wheels and advanced waterwheels that substitute solenoid-propelled metal balls for round H2O molecules. Just ignore him and he won't go away but he doesn't need encouragement he just keeps writing on & on & on [his free public keyboard].

Me thinks you must go back and do a little research. Check out how well GMO's have done in India for a start. Non organic is a matter of cheap production and diminished quality. But america has always been attracted to tasteless. Then there are all those lovely hormones and antibiotics they pump into the meat......Yummy. But we do get little 8 year old girls developing breasts and growing up to be 6'5" women. Just eating better, I guess. The little girl breast thing keeps Calvin Klein happy as he pimps pedophilia to America.

I've heard that an eatable weed called Purslane is extremely healthful. It's supposed to be the 8th most plentiful weed in the world. So many people eats it it's called different names in many countries but I've seen it sold as purslane.
Maybe we can survive by eating weeds Monsanto doesn't want.

No! I tell you everything is okay. This is a natural evolution we must allow to go to its natural completion! Do not be fools. Do not listen to this thread. Let this evil follow its natural course knowing that those who survive it will be a refined and strengthened human race. You must lay down [your arms]. When you land in JAIL and are being WATERBOARDED do not be misled neither Jan nor her big handsome stranger will help you! It is better to LIVE than to fight a losing battle like this. You're all gonna die. Is a plumped out waistline worth dying for? They won't help you with that either. LIVE!
Eating meat grown in sacks hanging on a wall can't be so bad. You tough guys are taking the wrong door I tell you. They want you to take this door. The only door to take is Heaven's Gate. Knock and Enter, and forget this wrong door to your sure death. Don't be a patsy. You don't see Handsome Stranger at the front of the line do you? He's a No-Show who lets others stand in his place and take his bullets so he can make more MOVIES. I saw Martin Luther King and this guy is no MLK. Are you going to die for them to make another M.O.V.I.E.? Where's Rush Limbaugh right now hmm? He's taking in an entire week of GOLF WITH RICH FRIENDS.
Where's Sean Hannity? Sitting behind a toy microphone shouting to you sheep to storm the walls for him he's one of many clock punchers your real enemies! These are FALSE PROPHETS OF A MODERN-DAY BAAL OUT OF PAY~OR. Disperse, and find something else to do. TRUST IN JESUS that's what the Catholics among you are commanded to do. Where are your Catholic leaders in Politics hmm? You won't even be put in a VIETNAMESE BODY BAG. Be careful who you let cattle prod you down a chute to a slaughter!

No, Moninsaneto, is just going to sue those animals that shit out the whole seeds and there by plant them without paying royalties. Apparently if the wind can cause patent infringement, so can shit. (in the most extreme cases, this kind of infringement could also be perpetrated by an errant farmer, taking a dump in the fields not having fully digested........well, you get the point)
To quote one corporate spokesperson, "See you in court, you little fury or feathered patent infringing vermin. You think you can hide from our corporate insanity backed by our carefully appointed officials and judicial thugs. If we can outwit the American public, what makes you think with your pea sized brains that you can out wit us? God bless Al Gore's support and investments in our company. And thank God, Obama keeps appointing our former executives to government positions." He then fell onto the floor in convulsions later to be determined to have been caused by a overdose combination of GMO Oxycontin and Ibogaine. Bon Voyage.
