(UPDATE)(CNN) -- Three hostages were rescued from the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Maryland, Wednesday afternoon after police shot and killed the man who was holding them, officials said.

The hostages were unharmed, Police Chief J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department said.

The suspect, identified by a law enforcement official as James Lee, earlier was in communication with authorities.

A number of devices in backpacks that Lee held have to be rendered safe, Manger added.

During negotiations, "he had a wide range of emotions," he said.

Law enforcement authorities have identified the Discovery Communications hostage-taker as James Jay Lee, according to NBC News.

Lee has a history of protesting the Discovery Channel; in 2008, he was arrested on charges of littering and disorderly conduct over a protest he organized against the network, according to DCist.

Lee is believed to be behind the website SaveThePlanetProtest, which lists 11 demands for the Discovery Channel. Among them, specific programming suggestions: (click on link to see)

    • Oh damn, sounds like he must have been a dangerous man....

      littering and disorderly conduct priors

"A number of devices in backpacks that Lee held have to be rendered safe"

Geez, I wonder if any of those devices were ink pens...they can be really dangerous.

Good thing they killed him. We can all feel safer now.

    • I'm worried this will screw the works of daniel quinn. This was a pretty horrible way to go about trying to help save our species and planet from this culture. He's basically only hurt any positive change based on Daniel Quinn's works. The fact that he hates humanity so much i think reveals his total misunderstanding of any ideas expressed in the "Ishmael" series.
I'm frustrated and pissed that a lone and misinformed jerk can fuck so much up for the rest of us.

first of all, you are one of the typical people to toss lables around, such as "environment haters". So in your twisted perspective, someone who doubts the veractity of the global warming hysteria and wants a calm and deliberative approach is an "environment hater", just like someone who believes we still need oil (yell loudly "environment hater"), or who is a hunter (now scream "environment hater")...

Basically...anyone who is conservative in your view is a "environment hater".

and no, the environmental extremists, the terrorists, are the ones who burn down developments in Aspen, or bomb construction sites, or sink ships, or take hostages.

I did not delineate "environment haters" as a political distinction, you are the one who admitted that. And you are one of the most offensive posters on this site when it comes to judging people based on what you perceive as their political stance. Therefore, I won't be taking anything you have to spew at me here with any sort of regard.

WTF! When's the last time you were through Aspen? There is a tree disease wiping out the aspens, and they can't cut and remove them fast enough to mitigate the fire hazard. You can't miss the sight of these brittle orange trees all over the Rockies. But let's not talk about what's killing the aspens in Colorado, or the hemlocks in N. Carolina, or the pines in Virginia, or the bees, or the bats, or the frogs, or any of the rest of the species we are wiping out with our "twisted perspective."

The environmental terrorists are the bastards polluting the entire earth so that they can make another dollar bill, but you keep right on marching in line curtis, it's only a short distance until you get to the end of that cliff, and then you can join all the other lemmings who only paid attention to the backside in front of their faces.

      You are so right!

As a matter of fact, among liberals, it is COMMON to promote the concept of abortion by analyzing the fetus as a "parasite".

I've heard that phrase a thousand times.

And the environmentalists make similar aguments about humans in general with frightening frequency.

Afterall, here you have Bradd Pitt who just the other day said he doesn't believe in the death penalty, but he'd "reconsider" for the BP execs.

In other words, if you rape and murder, you don't deserve the death penalty. BUT, if you pollute, well, since animals are worth more than humans, now THAT is a crime worthy of death.

On the other hand if the army finds out you were having gay sex while in iraq you could be discharged.
Don't worry, i got your back.
If i see any comments saying you had gay sex while deployed in iraq I will flag them so the army doesn't find out you had gay sex while deployed in iraq.

    • Nothing is straight forward. He had his rightwing bones too:

"5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)"

In truth the man was nothing but an extremist nut and in that he has everything in common with mad right-wing Christians, crazy extremist islamists and all the rest.

      myspace 12/13/06
I finished reading Al Gore’s book, and inconvenient truth a few days ago. It was very enlightening. However, at the end he didn’t offer any real solutions, as if changing a lightbulb would even put a scratch in the global warming epidemic. The book was half good, which means the part about science was good. The rest seemed like a commercial for sainthood.

If I am reading your intentions correctly, then I think the thrust of your analogy is BS. If I am not, I apologize in advance. But here goes nothing:
The only fact here is that some guy with a deranged mind allegedly believed something said by Al Gore. Then he mentally processed whatever he may have heard or read in such a way that he acted out and got himself killed. You know, like the same nut cases who act out when they hear Beck and Palin, like Timothy McVeigh acted out. If anything this is a conviction against the near utter indifference we in the US tend to heap on the mentally ill. Someone somewhere is going to ask, “Were there signs, did anyone see any signs, did he say or do anything that would indicate…?”
All I can say is, if we had better mental health care in the US the statistical probability for someone to “see any signs” would have been better

You fools and your attempts as discrediting by name calling is pathetic. You got nothing so you denigrate. The internet is great for this because it gives YOU trolls the courage to say what you normally wouldn't say. Evidently everyone who does not adhere to your pathetic belief is a troll, whatever that is. Pitiful.
Everyone has their own opinions and ideas about Gore. I think he is a self serving huckster promoting an unproven theory for his own advancement. I built a house with solar hot water, geothermal HVAC, closed cell spray foam insulation, VERY upgraded windows etc. for the sole purpose of NOT using energy at the level we have been. Everything we use winds up separated and disposed of in recycle bins. We compost and grow our own food. Both of my vehicles get > 30 mpg. Gore buys a huge mansion that sucks energy like a sponge but I am the troll. Whiners like you deal with a subject with emotion. I deal with this subject by actually doing something. This is laughable and pitiful and all because I don't bow down to Gore. No wonder that a lot of times I feel like I am having a battle of the wits with an unarmed person here.

when celebrities make statements (see those of J Cuzak, B Pitt), they have an extraordinary ability to push imbalanced people to do something they shouldn't.

However, I will agree that there are many on the FAR left who actually think (gasp) that Obama is "centrist" or even too conservative.
