Richest lawmakers grew wealthier as economy faltered

The rest of the country is still struggling with high unemployment amid a sluggish-at-best economic recovery -- but the wealthiest members of Congress are in high cotton. Indeed, the top 50 wealthiest lawmakers saw their combined net worths increase last year, according to the Hill's annual analysis of financial disclosure documents.
Combined, the 50 lawmakers were worth $1.4 billion in 2009 -- an $85.1 million increase over their 2008 total -- the Hill reports. The members' total combined assets depreciated by nearly $36 million last year -- but Congress' well-to-do set also reduced their debts by a combined $120 million.
The list of 50 lawmakers spans both parties (27 Democrats and 23 Republicans) and both chambers of Congress (30 House members, 20 senators), the Hill reports.
Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts topped the list for the second year in a row; Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas made his debut in the top 10.
Here are profiles for the 10 most flush Hill power-and-money brokers:

1. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.): $188.6 million. Kerry's worth, which grew by $20 million in 2009, stems from his wife's assets. Teresa Heinz Kerry, of the Heinz ketchup family, inherited hundreds of millions upon the death of her previous husband, Sen. John Heinz.
2. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.): $160.1 million. Issa actually saw his minimum net worth drop by $4 million, partly due to the poor performance of a single investment fund. Issa's fortune stems from investments he and his wife made in the electronics market. Their company eventually became the largest producer of car anti-theft devices in the country. They sold the business in 2000.
3. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.): $152.3 million. Harman is married to audio-equipment mogul Sidney Harman; stock holdings from his company, Harman International Industries, helped Harman's net worth grow by $40 million last year. Sidney Harman is in the process of purchasing Newsweek; the magazine's massive debts will presumably drag down Harman's 2010 disclosure numbers a bit.
4. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WVa.): $83.7 million. No surprise here: The Rockefeller family name has for generations been a byword for fabulous riches. (Rockefeller's great-grandfather John Rockefeller was an oil magnate; inflation-adjusted figures still peg the founder of the Rockefeller fortune as the wealthiest man in history.) But the senator's uptick in personal wealth last year came mainly from his wife's investments.
5. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas): $73.8 million. McCaul saw his net worth double last year, mostly owing to stocks held by his wife. McCaul's father-in-law founded the radio empire Clear Channel Communications.
6. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.): $70.2 million. Warner made millions through investments in the cell phone industry, including the Nextel company.
7. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.): $56.5 million. Before his 2008 election to Congress, Polis made a fortune in online enterprises, transforming his family's greeting card company into BlueMountain.com and founding ProFlowers.com.
8. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.): $53.5 million. Buchanan grew wealthy as the owner of multiple auto dealerships in Florida.
9. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.): $49.7 million. Lautenberg co-founded a payroll services company in the 1950s that became one of the industry's global leaders.
10. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.): $46.1 million. Most of the California lawmaker's wealth comes from real-estate holdings and investments made by her husband.

    • Yes , the deck is DEFINITELY stacked against us .... The only thing we CAN do , is boycott their corporations and thus damage their holdings . Then sit back and watch them change the names of the companies or jump ship ..... Above all , refuse to fall into the trap of thinking you are powerless . We still outnumber them , and no corporation can continue without customers .

    • P.S. The only hero I know of who got elected to the H.R.
was named David Crocket. He may have traveled as far
as Crocket County in Texas...I wasn't present then. I can't
say for sure. But there was an hombre I could respect. His
values were the same as mine. He also knew you can't take
it with you. No doubt a truth lost to the turds lusting for EZ
money through the prostitution of politics. I have no doubt
that their corruption makes the devil laugh. We all got a chance
to read the articles posted here on Current.com within the
last year alerting us to how many Millions of dollars Grassley,
Shumer et al were greased with by the Corporations representing
the Big Businesses of Health Care, Insurance et al. It's not hard
to see their heros are the ones who can misuse public office
to serve the interests of the Monopolist enemies of Democracy.

    • Wealthier in terms of money, only. Funny isn't it ? How people
like shithead Schumer and Kerry send their robot Emails to my
Email account as though their con artist spam had an engraved
RSVP from me soliciting their junk mail. Both of them PERSONALY
know I wouldn't piss on either of them if they were on fire. And even
more importantly why that's so. Yet they make themselves into the
kinds of jackasses they are(no pun intended) with their snake oil
wagon traveling town to town soliciting their victims to help them.

WTF kind of bad joke they really are. Maybe Kerry IS too abominably
stupid to understand we know he's part of the same Skull & Crossbones
society of Piracy that George Bush Jr. is. And that he wasn't looking
to assume the Presidency because he deserved it any more than
John McLame deserved it...But rather simply because it was his path
to immortality. He married into big money like a gigolo. He went into
politics to cash in on his Vietnam experience like Mclame did. What
these pathetic clowns can't realize, blinded by Big Money as they are,
is that we don't give their rats asses any schrift. The Corporate Party
of Big Money lubed their way into Congress. And I would almost laugh
if the Heinz Corporation per se got more votes for Kerry's Senate seat
on the next go round. More people in Hollywood likely use Heinz catsup
to simulate bloody wounds in motion pictures than Kerry has preserved
its American Revolutionary heritage for the benefit of all of the USA. We
here in New York are also an American Revolution State. And we honor
our heritage. My clan entered Pennsylvania in 1706 as some of the
Pennsylvania Dutch pioneers as Quakers. Our Amish breathren here
in New York are happier than any of Kerry's parasitical acquisition of
wealth could buy him. They EARNED their bread. Maybe Kerry should
wear another costume more appropriate to his life ledger than a business
suit. A 3 cornered hat, a pegleg, a parrot perched on his shoulder, and
a swashbuckler's would be more appropriate garb for that rum lot. But
because Kerry's in Show Business on Capitol Hill and not Hollywood,
he has to wait until Halloween to show his true face.

    • Why is Bluemountain.com the source for the story and also the main source of income for: 7. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.): $56.5 million. Before his 2008 election to Congress, Polis made a fortune in online enterprises, transforming his family's greeting card company into BlueMountain.com and founding ProFlowers.com

is this just an advertisement to get us poor people to spend more on internet greeting cards?

Gore about 100 million, Obama about 5 million. We are being ruled by the elite. This is nothing new. It's been going on for a lot of years. This is why I am so cynical when these idiots say they are for the regular folk. I don't think they can even spell those two words. I can tell you for a fact that Mark Warners does not listen to his constituents. I asked what his position was an several thing and the call taker directed me to a woman who identified herself as "Mary" and said she would return my call as soon as she found out the answer. This was a month ago and I am still waiting. When I called and asked to speak to her the call taker said no one by that name worked there. they don't listen and they don't care.

I often wonder what kind of clusterfuck was allegedly sold to the citizens
of the USA between 1910 and 1920 to result in the Constitutional Amendment
allowing the direct election of U.S. Senators. Because they appear to represent
the Corporations first, and the Corporation Big Money Party that gets them lubed
into Congress with their paid TV advertising time. And whenever that role is
satisfied first, so long as it appears consistent to their Corporate masters to be
in their interest...THEN they're allowed to represent their State. We've all heard
the bullshit slogans of that time: " The business of this country IS Big Business "
and " Whatever is good for Big Business is good for this country " yada yada yada.
Regan thought the joke was so hilarious he helped them send American jobs
to the 3rd world. Can't wait to see Walmart run for someone's Senate seat.

    • FEAR rules this Herd. The rich people herd all knows the taxpaying Public wants Free Energy whether solar, wind, tides off our thousands & thousands of miles of COASTLINE. The rich people heard you!

Can't you smell it?! That's the distinctive smell of FEAR. The herd senses the wind has changed direction against them so they are running hard and sweating. Sweating so hard you can smell it like a football locker room AFTER the game.

They have to reach a financially superior king of the hill position. Al Gore did it. Politicians saw Mr. Gore do it and they're following their ad hoc Leader. This isn't rocket science it's survival. Gore isn't in office, true, but he has successfully taken over as pack leader. He broke out of the political mode and MADE A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE.

He earned his position by the sweat of his brow and quite frankly he did so very honestly. The rest of the herd, all they know how to do is politics, so when one broke the mold they are unable to break he made himself the alpha male of the pack. Don't criticize the man ADMIRE HIM.

Don't we males AND females all aspire to make that move up the inside rail and cross the same finish line that Gore demolished?! He passed it so fast he wasn't even BREATHING HARD.

The rich herd is just following him and building as large a bankroll they possibly can because they realize its going to be a long winter they need to hibernate through til this godawful crummy world economy recovers its balance back in their favor.

Al Gore is our childhood fantasy. He's a modern-day young Elizabeth Taylor in her TV show National Velvet winning the races with her gimp [handicapped] little Irish guy horse trainer and Mentor. We may as well have a Superman costume made up for Mr. Gore and call him Fantasia Man.

Gore has crossed platforms and is multi-tasking faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a raging locomotive yee-oww, and has leaped the skyscrapers of defeat in a single bound.

      Fantasia Man, our Hero.

JanforGore has been accused of being love-smitten over Al Gore but really she is the advanced person and all of us the retards. She understood what Gore had done all along. We are watching a real-life happening here on the level of the Beatles taking down the house the Ed Sullivan Show, the screaming teenagers, or the I, Robot at the end where all the plain robots are looking up to the Al Gore leader standing at the top of the hill their leader.

A little. But wait, no, not much. Gore has ran to the top of the hill, everyone is looking up to the alpha leader. Jan had it right. Now all we need is a hunk hero riding a motorcycle. When the Economy rebounds, those ahead now will be the Way Ahead of Tomorrow yeah.

    • While these "people" (and i'm using that term loosely) are collecting a full paycheck in their respective jobs, people are losing jobs, losing homes and not eating because of the economy.

Great to see these "Leaders" doing great in hard times....
