Evidence of second fast north-south pole flip found

The Earth's magnetic poles flip around every 200,000 years or so, with north becoming south and vice versa. Normally, the process takes 4-5,000 years and it ought to be impossible for the flip to be much faster, if models of the Earth's core are correct, but now for the second time evidence has been found of a flip that appears to have taken only a few years.

The first time evidence was discovered of a rapid geomagnetic field reversal was in 1995 when well-preserved lava flows were found at Steens Mountain in Oregon in the US. Research on the rocks by a team led by geologist Scott Bogue of the Occidental College in Los Angeles revealed the lava flow had an unusual magnetic pattern that suggested the magnetic field had been shifting over 10,000 times faster than normal, at six degrees a day. The magnetic patterns are preserved within the magnetic crystals in the lava, formed as the lava flow cooled.

The first findings remained controversial and many scientists have challenged the fast flip-flop theory, but now Bogue and colleague Jonathan Glen of the US Geological Survey have found evidence in ancient lava rock in Battle Mountain, Nevada of a second fast flip, dated around 15 million years ago.

The record in one particular lava flow in Nevada suggests the magnetic field moved by 53 degrees in a single year. The lava started to cool, but was then heated again within a year as it was buried under fresh lava. The crystals in the rock were re-magnetized by the fresh lava, producing a shift of 53 degrees. This finding could mean the poles swapped over a period of only four years, but Brogue said it could also suggest there was a rapid acceleration period within the steady movement of the field.

According to some geologists a polarity reversal is overdue, since the Earth’s magnetic field has been weakening for the last century, and the last stable reversal was about 780,000 years ago. Even if it was a super-fast flip-flop, however, it would not be noticeable to most people. No one is certain why such reversals take place, although many scientists believe they are connected in some way with the convective movements of the liquid iron in the Earth’s outer core.

    • I suppose pole flips could be fast or slow depending on whats going on in the earths core. However, I've read that the flips could take anywhere from 100 to 1000 years. There is also the issue of how the flip takes place. Some scientists speculate it's a sloppy matter where the magnetic field becomes disorganized and diffuse before re consolidating at the opposite pole. If that happens "holes" in the magnetic shield produced by the earths molten iron core could expose areas of the earth to the full fury of the suns radiation. Better stock up on1,000,000 sunblock if that happens. :)

no, the tilt and the rotation of the earth depend on gravity (and angular momentum for the rotation, but i'm not getting into that). The only way to change the effect of gravity is to change the mass of either earth or the sun. A magnetic flip only deals with our planets interaction with electromagnetic radiation, like the radiation from the sun. if the magnetic poles flip, the only difference is electrons being accelerated in the magnetosphere would move in the opposite direction.

    • As an Electrician I can tell you that should the magnetic field in fact reverse, all electronics and electrical fields would be effected. Not something we would want to see happen. All transformers, motors and power generation would in fact be useless until they were re-phased. Easier said than done. If electric cars run on DC current reversing polarity would make it run in reverse. ( wink )

The magnetic fields of transformers change at rates of 50 or 60 times a second anyway as do the coils in power generation et al. They would not notice the difference, they are operating with the Earths magnetic field in one direction and it changing or the transformer or motor or whatever moving within that field goes essentially unnoticed.

A test, rotate a transformer through 180 deg. Did it stop working?

    • III. Figuring out what happens as the field reverses polarity is difficult because reversals are rapid events, at least on geologic time scales.
III. Magnetic North heads south, and – over about 1,000 years- the field does a complete flip-flop.

    • I. Scientists have long known that the magnetic pole moves.
      I. The magnetic fiel waxes and wanes, poles drift and, occaisionally, flip.
      I. Every so often, our planet’s magnetic poles reverse polarity.
      I. Reversals happen on average only about once every 250,000 years, and they take hundreds if not thousands of years to complete.
      I. Reversals take a few thousand years to complete, and during that time- contrary to popular belief- the magnetic field does not vanish.
      I. Earth’s magnetic field reverses every few thousand years at low latitudes and every 10,000 years at high latitudes, a geologist funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) has concluded.
      I. Each published polarity transition reported a slightly different duration, from just under 1,000 years to 28,000 years.

    • Wait a minute- then the north will become the south, and the south will become the north?

Will the Bible Belt move to New England?
Will they start waving confederate flags in Manhattan?
Will everyone in Atlanta start dressing in black?

    • When the magnetic poles shift, most of us will not have any problems walking around and doing things. However, about 29% of US citizens will have to stop walking around with their head up their ass to see where they really are, as they will have to deal with that pesky science thing, NOT contained in their “Holy Books.” Giggles!

Hahahaha. No, but your compass needles will.

But before the switch occurs (according to models) the North and South magnetic poles will weaken, then quasi poles will start popping up all over the place on Earth which might last for thousands of years or according to this article might take only 4 years (some geologists also cite some have popped up in the last few years in Northern South America near the equator) then the two main poles will switch north-south very fast after this long (or short) period of quasi poles popping up and the quasi poles will vanish and the two poles will strength again now opposite.

Glad to hear my Frig. will be fine.
Now i only have to worry about solar storms breaking through the weakened magnetic field. But on the bright side i won't have to travel to see those beautiful Aurora Borealis.

    • National Geographic made a documentary on the magnetosphere's
reversal of polarity. Its decrease of magnetic field force has waned
by 10% allowing shuttle astronauts doing EVAs greaqter danger
due to cosmic radiation which the magnetosphere normaly deflects.
The summer hit movie the Core several years back illustrated this.
The shield loss can also be measured in the huge magnetic anomoly
under the S.Atlantic ocean off the coast of Brazil. Scientists interviewed
in the Nat Geo documentary theorized that the Sun and Earth are on
a harmonic wavelength with a nuclear reaction occurring at the center
of the earth's core. It's the revolution of the liquid iron core that makes
for the magnetosphere, and which keeps our atmosphere from bleeding
away into space. The sunspot activity cycle and the long overdue shift
in polarity are heating up. Always remember that Alaska was once at
the equator, which is why they have so much fossilized plankton(oil)
      and Gold.

    • Hey, I read some stuff on this. There seems to be a weakening in the earth magnetic fields in the South Atlantic Ocean. This is an indication of a shift.
If it does shift, due to rock and satellites, we will be able to know where the magnetic fields will be strong and weak. There is one scientist that even made an accurate computer model not only showing shift in the past, but also probably shift in the future. I think I saw it on Discover or something like that.
Anyway, all this does not mean we will die off. It means there will be places on the earth that will be deadly for us to cross.
Mostly it would suck getting use to it. Like planes would have to fly around the dead zone in the South Atlantic for example. If cities were in a dead zone, well people could not live there anymore. But it is interesting.
