Early cavemen in Europe ate human meat as part of their everyday diet, new research suggests.A new study of fossil bones in Spain shows that cannibalism was a normal part of daily life around 800,000 years ago among Europe’s first humans.
Bones from the cave, called Gran Dolina, show signs of cuts and other marks which will have been made by early stone tools.
Among the bones of bison, deer, wild sheep and other animals, scientists discovered the butchered remains of at least 11 human children and adolescents.
The bones also displayed signs of having been smashed to get the nutritious marrow inside and there was evidence that the victims’ brains may also have been eaten.
Striek marks on the bone at the base of the skull also indicated that the humans had been decapitated according to the study’s co-author José Maria Bermúdez de Castro.
Bermudez de Castro, of the National Research Center on Human Evolution in Burgos, Spain, told National Geographic: ‘Probably then they cut the skull for extracting the brain. The brain is good for food.’
Scientists believe that early man ate fellow humans both to fulfill his nutritional needs and to kill off neighbouring enemy tribes.
Bones of humans that had been eaten spanned a period of around hundred thousand years, indicating that the practice was not just confined to times when food was scarce.

"I have a story been read when i am just a kid around nine year old or younger in a comics here in Quezon Province that when you visit a group of people, they will sacrifice their life and offer the brain to the visitor for food.
One of my friend is a cannibal for what i heard from him. As a matter of fact, one of the prestigious problem here is the Government itself because the public official in the Government is hiding the body of the victim where my friend ate the meat inside the closed tank of the water reservoir.
My father told me that if he is hungry he will ate meat of humans too. So i am puzzled about their actions because one of them is showing me bones of children (babies) that was being cooked liked lechon inside the church of Lucban, Quezon.
If this is true, then those people specially those Officials who wants to kill me already ate human flesh because most of them tried to ate that when they are children and forced many people to eat to control them and follow their order as a God.
I can not believed about this research but one of the cannibal who ate human flesh is inside the circus that time and was beaten many times to show that he was a cannibal and forced to ate human flesh.
I want to explain what kind of Government this coutnry have even this local Government. They will threaten you to follow orders and will kill you or beaten you and used drugs to sabotage you or stole your name and identity just to proved that they are powerful.
I have a blood of a scientist but my father has a blood of a cannibal and my biological father has a blood of a priest."-Jane Zeta K. Bond

The whole world is full of canibals. Just go to a meat market or the super market and take a good look at those steaks and chops. They look exactly like human steaks. The DNA may not be exact but meat is meat. Everybody should be forced to watch pigs, cows, steers, chickens, sheep and lambs being slaughtered and watch the fear and listen to the screams of the living, feeling and fearing creatures. look up the anatomy of any of these creatures and you will find that these animals have the very same organs as any human. They have vlood, a nervous system, lungs, a heart etc. They can see, hear, feel, taste, but they make noises instead of talking. But some creatures try to imitate humans. So the next time you set down to dine, remember your meal could be anyone or anything.

The organic urban farm that I volunteer at actually has classes where they teach people to cut the heads of chickens. (We raise chickens on the farm, for several purposes; to fertilize the land, kill the weeds, serve as an educational experience for vistors that come to the farm, and because, quite simply, they are cool). Many people who come to this farm/are associated with it are vegetarian or vegan. The educational director told us it was a good experience watching, for the first time, a chicken getting their head chopped off. A sort of reality check. We still raise the chickens with respect and dignity.

Have you seen the creepy movie "The Road?"
Humans, early humans are quite capable of horrendous things (even though 800K years ago it wouldn't be considered so).
Cannibalism can be the norm when other humans are not looked at as the same as you.

...even as late as 1972, when plane crashed in the Andes, carrying football team...the movie "Alive" depicts the real events confronting the survivors, and how they were forced into cannabalism to survive, by consuming the ones that didn't survive the crash...survival is a mighty strong instinct...as to cavemen consuming their offspring, it sounds feasible, that instinct would play a major part, as to targetting the most vulnerable of the tribe...

'butchered and ate the brains of children as part of everyday diet'
Everyday? even if it was once a week, that would be 52 children per caveman every year. Unless 95% of the population was pregnant cavewomen, this could not be part of an everyday diet. - 2 years ago

Good. Finally we expose early man for what he is. A brain eating, child killer that spits in the eye of God by not properly burying their dead. This has gone too far. I say we no longer let them build a monolith near ground zero and boycott Geico for helping to fund their terrorist activities. We also damn well better make sure they are not allowed to marry either. I don't want my kids going to school where there are parents that might eat them.
Thank goodness we have scientists that can quickly judge an entire group by the actions of a few crazy people in a cave.

Humans killing humans to survive is a bit ironic, early humans practically depended each-other for survival of the group. Cannibalism would likely have occurred in response to extreme conditions including a shortage of food supply. If this was true then I'd figure this happened during one of earths climate extremes. However suggesting this is human nature is making quite the intellectual leap

Um,
Just the info in this abbreviated form of article claims the human bones "that had been eaten" spanned 100,000 yrs. Let's say the 11 WERE eaten, that is only ONE kid every 9091 years. That is a very small "part of their everyday diet". Eaten or not, who's been around a bratty kid and not wanted to give 'em a little shove? Early humans sound pretty self restrained to me. - 2 years ago

I question any scientist who looks at one site and says "All early humans must have eaten children!"
I'm sure there was child murders back in those days too, but doesn't mean it was the norm. How do the scientists know the children didn't just die and were being eaten cus they weren't going to waste the meat after the child died of natural causes???? Child mortality rate was a fairly high before the 19th century.
To say EVERY EARLY MAN is ridiculous, that would be a bad model for the continuation of the species don't ya think? And wouldn't you think Chimps and Gorillas would do it today if it was part of the 'primitive' diet?
I'm sure any civilization in the future that discovers us will say "All humans were murders, we found 11 children's bodies buried beneath this one dude's house."

Early man is kind of a deceiving way to phrase it. At the time range listed we are not talking about our species, but the precursors to it. While we evolved from them, stating it this way makes people think Homo sapiens, or what we consider human, to be the subject when clearly they are not.

There have been modern societies that practice ritual cannibalism--of the deceased. I can't think of very many other animals that eat their own. Sure, early humans may have been killing the children of other tribes for their brains (and as reproductive competition with the other tribes), but do the researchers provide any direct evidence that the children were killed for the brains, rather than their being the deceased children of those who ate them? I wish researchers/reporters emphasized facts over conjecture, and clearly distinguished the two.
By the way, eating brains is dangerous. I vaguely remember learning in my genetics class that there's evidence for widespread prion epidemics in prehistoric times. I don't remember the details...

Another problem with this assumption - and I emphasize the term assumption. Is that scientists and archaeologists tend to add on thousands and millions of years to the age of these finds, to back up their theories of evolution, and the existence of these so-called CAVEMEN. I realize these people need there jobs, like everyone else, but damn, now they have their cavemen eating their children. I'm not saying that archaeology is not a relevant tool in helping us to understand and validate some of our history, and the genesis of our existence. But, you can't just believe EVERYTHING these people tell you, just because they have degrees and diploma's on their walls.
