Violence and the Biblical God, I guess from scripture we can assume Christianity is as violent as Islam!

Wow...
Nothing displays the minimum intelligence needed to operate the internet like a person posting a comment defining someone else as a belonging to a specific religious group because they stated a basic fact that anyone with a 6th grade education should know...
Out of curiosity, did you go to a public school in the United States Ayipis?

And so it begins--the idiotic so-called christians are finally getting a taste of their own medicine and waking up to the reality that you can't take away other people's religious freedom and expect yours to remain intact.
Sort of reminds me of awhile back when rational people started pointing out the concept of irony to members of the Tea Party who were being overly homophobic in their rhetoric.

What I find amusing is that nonsense like this supposed story are posted by "Athiests". You must be aware of your own spirituality on some level and are confused as to why you keep doing what you do. You deny God exists? No, if you did you would not bother to argue the fact. If you do not believe in a Higher Power - God why do you fight a loosing battle within your own minds?

I enjoy spirited debate. Besides, religion is nothing more then philosophy with a figure head. And yes, really, there is no god. No santa claus, no tooth fairy, and no happy endings. Enjoy your life, live it, be nice to each other. We would all be better if we just followed that simple rule and never mind fighting and killing over who has the better myths. I prefer the greek ones. Zeus was as real to those people as god is to you...

As an athiest i do not believe in God. I dont spend all day pondering the existence of a higher power... i just go about my day like any normal person.
The reason why you hear about athiests denying God all the time is because folks like you just LOVE to shove your religion down our throats. Whether it be trying to get prayer time in schools, or trying to push your creationist garbage curriculum, trying to officially declare this a christian nation, trying to ban gay marriage, etc. If religious zealots would just keep their religion in their own houses and churches then you would almost never hear from us.

The problem is not if God exists or not.
The problem is that people like you BELIEVE in such a being, and justify your bigotry, hatred and violence with that belief. We don't argue with imaginary beings.
We argue with morons who believe in imaginary beings. That is why we fight a winning battle against ignorance- since the more educated someone is, the less likely to be religious.

Increasing religious tensions between Christianity and Islam, and the increasing decline of religion in the technologically advanced nations, IS a current events issue.
Plus, this post is a direct response to the Koran burning that will take place on Saturday.
All of that makes it newsworthy.

I also need to add that all the examples here r old testament. According to the religion god renounced his violent ways with the death of his son thus creating the "new covenant". The old testament god = jewish ( happy new year btw) the new testament god = christian. Again, I am atheist, I just enjoy reading religion and philosophy ( a walk on a slippery rock religion....sorry, couldn't resist)

Yes, the Old Testament God is more violent than the New Testament God, but they are the same God.
And, in the very last chapter there is a twist worthy of M. Night Shamalan.
He goes Medieval on all our asses.

I am an atheist who loves to read philosophy and religion. Having read both the bible and the Quoran I must mention one thing, Jesus, at least, never killed anyone. The same can not be said of Mohamed who killed or directed the killing of quite a few ppl, and seemed to use deception a lot to achieve that goal.... just saying...

while I think you and I would agree on much, wasn't Jesus technically God (the whole trinity = three in one idea)? And God killed lots of people with a flood according to the bible.

Great Points and a priceless quote form Thomas Paine:
"The Bible's potential to instigate violence stems, in large part, from its claims that although God committed or ordered violent acts, he is perfect,[1] righteous,[2] just,[3] gracious,[4] merciful,[5] compassionate,[6] and loving.[7]
Because God is said to possess exemplary characteristics but still commits or orders violence, his followers may decide they can behave similarly and still be good people. They might even think they have a religious duty to follow his violent example.
The American patriot Thomas Paine referred to the development of such attitudes when he said, "The belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man."
I also want to point out though, I'm against burning ANY books.
I grew up reading Grimm's Fairy Tales at my Granny's hearth-side and I view all books, even books of fairy tales, as valuable, one way or another. - 1 year ago

I'd agree that freezing (or starving) changes the picture. If you ever get the chance to see Charlie Chaplin make a feast of his leather shoe in a frozen cabin in the Yukon in the silent film "Gold Rush" it makes an indelible impression, even if it is comedy. - 1 year ago

A God that accepts violence, and promotes it in the name of God can't be a righteous God!
