GAINESVILLE, Fla. —
The leader of a small Florida church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy says he is canceling plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.
Pastor Terry Jones said Thursday that he decided to cancel his protest because the leader of a planned Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its controversial location. The agreement couldn't be immediately confirmed.
Jones' plans to burn Islam's holiest text Saturday sparked an international outcry.
President Barack Obama, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan and several Christian leaders had urged Jones to reconsider his plans. They said his actions would endanger U.S. soldiers and provide a strong recruitment tool for Islamic extremists. Jones' protest also drew criticism from religious and political leaders from across the Muslim world.

A Fitting Farewell To Wannabe Koran-Burner Terry Jones
It was a little more than a week ago that Pastor Terry Jones threatened to burn himself into all our hearts by burning the Koran on September 11. After the initial flurry of media hullabaloo, it quickly became apparent that the Florida Pastor was more than a little over his head, and he cancelled the event. Then he changed his mind. Then he re-cancelled it. Now, a week after he wasted everybody's time, the city of Gainesville, Fla. is giving the Pastor and his Dove World Outreach Center a $200,000 bill.
They're charging him and his Church for the more than 360 officers who were on duty last weekend as a direct result of the Pastor's threats. Gainesville City Manager Russ Blackburn told AP he doesn't know if the city has legal authority to compel the church to pay, but the message is certainly clear. And now, we can all forget about the Pastor and his hollow threats, and the name Terry Jones can go back to only being associated with its rightful owner, the great Monty Python actor.

the best part is that he has affirmed his mania as such, not gods will.by not destroying this book that is supposedly evil, while presenting himself as being a man of god, in action he shows his understanding of divinity has wiggle room.
what was absolute in the name of god on monday, became subject to change by tuesday.pssst the christians who got fed to the lions in colosiums were believers in gods word, this guy is just a hate driven prick, who has proven it himself as such.not driven by faith but personal serving hate.

City plans to bill pastor for security around planned Quran burning
By John Couwels, CNN
September 17, 2010 3:15 p.m. EDT.
* Gainesville to send a $180,000 bill to Pastor Terry Jones
Orlando, Florida (CNN) -- The city of Gainesville, Florida, plans to send a bill estimated at more than $180,000 to Pastor Terry Jones for security costs surrounding his controversial threat to burn Qurans on the anniversary of the September, 11, 2001, attacks, a police spokeswoman said Friday.
Police agencies spent more than a month working on security plans to ensure the community surrounding Jones' Dove World Outreach Center -- the planned site of the burning -- was safe, according to Gainesville police spokeswoman Cpl. Tscharna Senn.
Jones also told authorities he received numerous death threats because of the planned protest, which he called off amid increasing pressure from world leaders.
The Gainesville Police Department said it spent more than $100,000 while the Alachua County Sheriff's Office spent an estimated $80,000 during the weekend of the planned demonstration.
"We have 286 sworn officers and almost everyone was working either at the Dove Center or at other soft targets," Senn said. "Unless you were sick or injured you were working" the day the burning was to take place.
Officers secured malls in the region, the University of Florida's football stadium and areas around the church in the days leading up to the planned event.
Jones said Friday that the church was "not aware that we would be billed for security."
"If we had known this in advance, then we would have refused to have security," he said.
Some have accused authorities of over preparing.
"It's easy to say we over prepared but if something horrible had happened we would have been criticized for being unprepared," Senn said.
The planned burning prompted demonstrations by Muslims around the world this week, including Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia and India.

Pastor behind Quran plan may face $200,000 bill
Jones wants to move church; Gainesville authorities want to recoup costsPAUL J. RICHARDS / AFP - Getty Images
Pastor Terry Jones says he wants to move his church to Tampa Bay, Fla., from Gainesville, Fla., where authorities would like him to pay $200,000 for their protection during the firestorm he spurred.msnbc.com news services
updated 9/18/2010 5:56:59 PM ETTAMPA — The preacher from Gainesville who ignited a firestorm of criticism over his plan to torch 200 copies of the Quran says he wants to move his church to the Tampa Bay area by the end of the year, NBC affiliate WFLA reported.
He's also facing a $200,000 bill for policing costs during the firestorm his plan created, The Gainesville Sun newspaper said. However, officials say they're not sure they can force him to pay.
"A fresh start is a good term," Terry Jones said. "There's a more favorable atmosphere for the church and our message in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area."
A site for a future church here has not been selected, but the Tampa Bay area is at the top of the list for relocation, he told WFLA.
Jones, 58, owns a condominium on Treasure Island, according to Pinellas County property records, WFLA reported.
Jones said the move could happen as soon as he can sell his current church, Dove World Outreach Center. The property, a prefab warehouse turned into a sanctuary and an adjoining building, has been for sale for some time, he said.
Ramzy Kilic, communications director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told WFLA that if Jones does move to the Tampa Bay area, he hopes the preacher will show tolerance.
"If he ever chooses to come here with open arms and good intentions, the interfaith community would receive him," Kilic said. "If you want to be a member of the Tampa community, you should exemplify neighborly qualities. Tampa is a great city and he's more than welcome."
Before he goes, though, Gainesville authorities say they want him to cover the cost of policing the Dove World Outreach Center for the planned Quran burning that never happened, The Gainesville Sun reported.
The cost is expected to come to about $100,000 each for the Gainesville Police Department and the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, officials told the Sun.
Gainesville City Manager Russ Blackburn and Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell each told the Sun Jones would get a bill.
Police Maj. Rick Hanna told the Sun the expenses were high because so much territory had to be covered — the area around the church, the University of Florida football game and "soft targets" such as The Oaks Mall.
"We wanted a lot of high visibility and very preventative patrolling," said Hanna, who was in charge of the operation for Gainesville Police. "You have to weigh it — you don't want to create an atmosphere of hysteria, but we took it real serious."
The sheriff had 242 deputies on duty Sept. 11, 160 of whom were working specifically because of the planned protest, the Sun said.
Total costs for security actually were higher when adding participation by other agencies including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and several sheriff's offices that provided support such as bomb sniffing dogs and detection devices, officials told the Sun.
Blackburn said he isn't sure how realistic it is to expect the church to pay or how much legal authority the city has to compel the church to pay.
City Attorney Marion Radson said from his observations, the city was providing a "direct service" to the church.
Jones, a former hotel manager from Nashville, grabbed international attention when he announced that he would burn copies of Islam's holiest book on the nine-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. He backed off the plan Sept. 9 and flew to New York for a meeting that never materialized with New York imam Feisal Abdul Rauf to talk about moving the site of a proposed Islamic center near ground zero, which has also created an uproar.

Straight Talk Espresso
Pastor Terry Jones. No guts. No glory.
by Henry Rollins
September 13, 2010, 10:41 AMSmoke but no fire. The only thing worse than Pastor Terry Jones scheduled Koran burning is the fact that he canceled the proposed event.
He blinked. What a coward. If Pastor Jones was strong in his convictions, he would have gone ahead with his book barbeque. The water got way too hot way too fast for this moron and he shrank back from the global glare.
Everyone’s weighing in. Sarah Palin said that, “Book burning is antithetical to American ideals.” Book reading is antithetical to Palin’s ideals, that’s obvious but even she’s on the right side of this one.
What’s the matter Terry? Endangering the lives of American forces in Afghanistan and Iraq and needlessly inflaming Muslims all over the world suddenly lose its appeal? Knowing that the injuries sustained at the NATO military base in northern Afghanistan sits squarely on your shoulders become a little too heavy? You better “pray about that.”
Look at all the time that has been wasted on this Real American. President Obama, whose main job at this time should be finding jobs for Americans, has to take time out to babysit this idiot? Apparently so.
That what Pastor Jones wants to do is despicable is not up for debate. That this small-time hick has taken my First Amendment and trashed it in this manner is infuriating and inexcusable. When people make my country look bad, I can’t stand it. I’m in Islamic countries all the time. It’s not a stretch to say that Jones is endangering my life.
I only hope that every Christian in America is against what this pastor wants to do.
This idiot had had no idea what a hornet’s nest he was smacking. When he found out, he ran like a bitch.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2010/09/saudi-arabia-lgbt-gay-righ...
he story of Ali Ahmed Aseeri's plea for protection was originally broken on Saturday by NBC, which quoted e-mails from Aseeri as well as a letter he allegedly posted on an unnamed Saudi website in which he described his country as "backwards" and claimed his life was in danger.
Aseeri, who is secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, also threatened to disclose sensitive information about the Saudi Royal family to the U.S. media.
Despite an absence of any reference to the story in the mainstream Saudi newspapers, it was posted on several blogs and was carried by a number of Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian and pan-Arab media outlets, where it has been provoking considerable commentary and a fair amount of skepticism.
Commenter "Abu Khalid," writing on the Al Jazeera website, which cited NBC's report, accused the Western media of bias and "relishing divisiveness among Muslims," and called into question the accuracy of the story. Very few seemed sympathetic to Aseeri's alleged persecution, and many considered his comments against his country and his actions traitorous.
Aseeri "said that some clerics distort Islam's tolerance ... how can he be gay and say these words?" wrote "Mohammad, a Son of the Nation" from the seaside Saudi city of Jeddah.
Readers of the Left-leaning Lebanese daily Al Akhbar, which ran a brief from the Agence France-Presse, were equally cynical, but for different reasons.
"If you're not embarrassed, do what you want. If he wanted to leave Saudi Arabia, it's Saudi's gain, but why tarnish the image of the Saudis?" wrote one commenter.

It's amazing how many people side with anyone other than Americans on this site. If it's so bad here, why not go to Afghanistan?
He's got a right to burn anything he wants. They can burn all the bibles they want in any Sharia country, but nobody here says a word about it.
This is a non-event. Fuckin' A Christ, the media makes a big smokin' deal about it, and it's nothing. How about when some Muslims blow up some Jews, or Americans, or anyone else that isn't Muslim? No news at all, maybe a byline in some newspaper. But some Yahoo preacher, from Florida no less, wants to burn a couple of books, and that's all they are, no more, no less, and the whole fucking world shits a brick.
How about we get this back into context.

This has definitely been blown out of proportion. And lost in all of the sensationalism is the truth that this does undermine the security of our troops abroad when we as a people are exhibited this way. But then again I guess that's why people can't stop talking about it.
but back to the first line... There is no utopia. Everywhere there are plenty of problems. I hate it when people say if you don't like it here go somewhere else. I love America. really it is just that simple?if so hitler is falsely accused as he killed not one jew, just his idealogy did.shit in ww1 hitler was fighting along side jews on behalf of germany.
your faith in christ is predicated on jewish prophecy of the messiah, given to us by murderers, requiring the messiah come from the bloodline of them.(the house of david)
at the end of the day it is all stories based in faith.it is entirely possible mohamed killed no one and it just served broader purpose in telling a story.scriptures not included in the new testament have jesus killing people in his youth before gaining an adult sense of compasion.if you want to make it a numbers game based soley on contemperary interpritation of religious texts, every single person on the planet has a different idea making any comparison impossible.believe what ever you want to believe.more power to ya, but you cant fault islam for claiming supremecy as you create terms in a manor for christianity to do the same.
just to give you a taste of it.(you know i dont think this way)
how many civilizations has judaism conquered and people killed in order to spread judaism compared to christianity.
how legit is christianity as divine when it absorbed pagan gods and culture versus judaisms strict adherance to the torah that has remained unaltered.its religion baiting, not substative debate

Man, you've never read any history! Just one example out of a great many: 1553 John Calvin, the "Protestant Pope" of Geneva proved his Christian credentials by having Michael Servetus, the Spanish physician, burned at the stake. That's the middle of the 16th century, and was by far not the last time nor century people were burnt at the stake.

Rally of Remembrance today: Yes to freedom, no to Ground Zero mosque
Our rally today is for those who were murdered nine years ago today -- murdered in the name of a religion and a book whose followers now plan to place a victory mosque at the site of the murders. And make no mistake, it will be seen as a victory mosque in the Islamic world. There are thousands of historical precedents -- victory mosques all over Muslim countries, built on the cherished sites of conquered peoples. But there are no mosques of reconciliation built on the site of earlier jihad attacks in order to reach out in friendship to those who were attacked. None.
Yet we are to believe that this mosque, and this mosque alone, will be understood as the latter by the great majority of Muslims worldwide.
And that is not the only thing that strains credulity. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an open proponent of Sharia and restrictions on the freedom of speech; he refused to denounce Hamas; and he has been highly disingenuous about his funding and about whether his mega-structure would contain a mosque at all. Yet we are to believe he is an warm-hearted moderate with nothing but good intentions.
We have had enough of being lied to. And we have had enough also of our dead being disrespected, and of the prospect of a monument to their deaths being built where they were killed. We have had enough of the media smearing everyone who opposes this mosque as hateful -- running interference for a hateful ideology that would deny equality of rights to women and non-Muslims, and eradicate the freedom of speech and freedom of conscience.
Again: William Jennings Bryan said it in 1896 in a vastly different context, but every word applies today:
We do not come as aggressors. Our war is not a war of conquest; we are fighting in the defence of our homes, our families, and posterity. We have petitioned, and our petitions have been scorned; we have entreated, and our entreaties have been disregarded; we have begged, and they have mocked when our calamity came. We beg no longer; we entreat no more; we petition no more. We defy them!
We beg no more. We entreat no more. We petition no more. We defy them. We are not the aggressors. We are not haters. We are not racists. We are not bigots. We are not neofascists. Those who claim otherwise are knowingly or unknowingly abetting a monstrous evil.We defy them. Peacefully, lawfully, and with unshakable resolvem, we defy them. And we stand for freedom today.

Jones manipulated the media & used them & because they were so eager to find ''Islamophobia'' they happily let themselves get suckered by a crank. The mainstream media is a lost cause, their Lefty ideology so bankrupt they'll grasp at any straw, distort any story, invent the most ridiculous arguments. But, ...consumers aren't fools - we know most journalists are unprofessional, uninformed, biased fools in a sinking industry that loses credibility (and money) by the day. The media completely missed the point - this guy wasn't the story, the real story was the temper tantrum by the Religion of Perpetual Outrage. The real story was the idiotic reaction of politicians, dhimmwits all, who fell over themselves to condemn what should normally be a non-event.

I agree mostly but I hardly consider burning ancient text a non event. The Quran and Bible are a part of the history of mankind whether we agree or disagree like it or not. We should accept our history, as is, and learn.

Defending those that cannot defend themselves is very noble. I think we have done that in Afghanistan and Iraq and now it's time for them to defend themselves like we have trained them to do? Our continued presence in these Islamic countries is enabling the corruption of the spiritually wicked in high places. Historically the U.S.has never propped up a popular government in a foreign country why should we believe anything has changed if our Foreign policies don't change.

What's really annoying about all of this is that people keep saying well IN Middle Eastern countries were radical Islam is the ruling party the people in those countries burn holy books about Christianity and pretty much all every other religions writings as well--and or people (again LIVING IN countries controlled by fanatical religious leaders) attack and kill and imprison anyone who isn't Muslim--- so thanks for the history lesson Captain Obvious.
Seriously I just want to scream DUH!!! These people live in countries that DO NOT have a constitution that gives them freedom to practice ANY religion they choose and therefore they are basically compelled by their government to be radical and do stupid hateful acts to prove they are not secretly members or believers of another religion besides Islam. (Although sadly up until 2000 when DICK Cheney came into power with his henchman Donald Rumsfeld, his puppet George W., his personal propaganda network FOX news---we lived in a country that was tolerant of ALL religions and DID practice what we preached so to speak with regard to religious freedom.)
Also DUH!! why did we get into the war with Afghanistan and to a lesser extent why did we change up our mission in Iraq? Because we wanted to give these countries the gift of democracy and religious freedom and tolerance and show them a it was possible to form a government where ALL ethnicities and religious beliefs had representatives at the table.
And a giant huge DUH!! the government of the U.S. and even the government of the state of Florida and the City government of Gainsville NEVER SAID he could not burn the Koran on his private property or outside the city limits or in a private ceremony for HIS 50 member church and their families to attend---they simply said first off its illegal to hold that big of a burn in the city limits--- and then said to deliberately burn the Koran on September 11th was essentially an act of hatred and violence against peaceful law abiding Muslims living here in the U.S. and was just as wrong as what the radical terrorists guys did by flying planes into a building full of innocent people who happened to be peaceful law abiding Americans who just went to work that day.
And a final DUH!! just as September 11th evoked and still evokes a sense of nationalism and pride in being an American and was and is used as a recruiting tool to bump up military recruitment and fight the war on terror---this act of burning the Koran would have been used in EXACTLY the same way by Al-Queida and radical terrorist groups to bump up their sense of nationalism and recruit people for their military to fight the war against radical hate filled American Christianity.

People of other cultures need to arrive at their own conclusions about what is best for their country,
We went to Afghanistan to kill Osama. We failed. Deposing the Taliban was just a by product of the operation. We need to keep out of other countries civil wars. The Afghanistan culture is way older than ours. Thats rather like a child telling the parent how to behave. Democracy is not the answer or savior for every third world economy Look back at our colonialist history. We have failed in just about every country we ever got involved withFundamental Islam is not openly making this a religious conflict even though it is under the covers. They are using our failed foreign western based policies against us in Muslim countries.Resisting Western Imperialism is the big Taliban recruiting tool. America represents western imperialist ideals and because we are closely allied with Israel hurts our credibility in Muslim countries. We need to get secular Islam more involved with Islamic issues.
We need to redeploy from those countries and take care of our growing domestic issues.
We need jobs we need a balanced budget we need to rediscover and reinvent the things that made our country the greatest country in the world. We used to be the greatest manufacturing power in the world. We need to reevaluate our immigration strategy to help secure our borders. We are the biggest debtor nation in the world and we have become a country with only a services based economy left. That is very sad tome. Charity begins at home. - 1 year ago

Well first off I don't see how its a "good" or "logical" to justify allowing Christians to burn the Koran here in the U.S. where ALL religions are guaranteed a right to practice their faith without being persecuted--- by saying well the Muslims living in the Middle East don't do that--they just burn the American flag and people who practice a different type of religion besides Islam--but hey they don't burn the bible so the Pastor in Florida and now the Pastor in Kansas can somehow claim the moral high ground in that regard.
Second I wasn't perfectly clear in stating that the reason the military and the DOD gave for getting into Iraq and Afghanistan was to spread democracy and religious tolerance to the Middle East. Because I will give you a nod of agreement that really it is not right for any country to go into another and tell them what to do. And I also agree that we definitely need to go about cleaning up our own backyard before we start bitching about our neighbors across the oceans yards.
But really it all boils down to once again--if American christians don't or won't uphold the very basic core framework of our constitution that allows people to practice their religion without fear of being assaulted or having their specific religions sacred texts and artifacts burnt or destroyed--then we really can't tell radical Islamic terrorists to fuck off and leave off attacking us from a place of religious hatred and intolerance.

This whole thing on the part of pastor Jones was a publicity stunt pure and simple and I have lost any respect I had for him when he made his initial announcement! His conduct on this matter makes every American look indecisive in the eyes of Islam, not that they didn't think that the majority weren't fools already! it is no wonder that the Islamofacists laugh at us!
