Dr. Andrew Weil: Cannabis Rx: Cutting Through the Misinformation

If an American doctor of the late 19th century stepped into a time warp and emerged in 2010, he would be shocked by the multitude of pharmaceuticals that today's physicians use. But as he pondered this array (and wondered, as I do, whether most are really necessary), he would soon notice an equally surprising omission, and exclaim, "Where's my Cannabis indica?"

No wonder -- the poor fellow would feel nearly helpless without it. In his day, labor pains, asthma, nervous disorders and even colicky babies were treated with a fluid extract of Cannabis indica, also known as "Indian hemp." (Cannabis is generally seen as having three species -- sativa, indica and ruderalis -- but crossbreeding is common, especially between sativa and indica.) At least 100 scientific papers published in the 19th century backed up such uses.

    • I think we all know why this plant is really illegal so I wont get into that. Second I do agree that some if not a lot of people do abuse this plant, reason I think being is "can u hang"? As for violence over this drug i want to let everyone know that I will be part of the Mexican Armada in a few weeks, and lately all the talk around the shooting range is about marijuana and it's potential money making opportunities for the drug cartels. A lot of the Mexican people down here believe that the best way to end the violence and reduce the drug cartels income is through wordlwide legalization. Third of all I want to say that even if we manage to stop the flow of marijuana it is ultimately the American public who has to decide do I want to keep smokin pot or do I want to inject myself with potent dope. What the American public does not realize or I think does not care to address is that these drug cartels are still alive because of the American need for drugs. So all I can and will say is America please Go Green and Stay that Way!

It seems that you believe that Anything that is abused should be illegal? Some people abuse Computer Games, as shown in an article here today. So, should computer games be illegal? Then you can take it further, as many politicians tend to do, and make computers illegal. Wait, that means you are using a product that you believe should be illegal! :))

Correct, most murders are committed for one of 3 reasons, (Money, Anger, and Power), and MONEY is by Far the Most common reason.

Drug crimes are nearly Always committed for the MONEY involved in the illegal activity, Not the possession for use of the drug itself and I have NEVER heard of Anyone committing murder due to the want of a Marijuana high, only the MONEY involved in the illegal sale of the drug! If computer games were to become illegal, then there would be murders committed for the MONEY involved in the illegal black market sale of those games!

So, as I asked ayipis, if computer games can be abused then should computer games be made illegal? Then there would be a black market for them and Many murders would be committed for the MONEY involved.

No, but you can neglect your family for three weeks and they could starve while you're glue to your monitor.
      That's abuse.
That's what's being talked about here.

So even though you snort cocaine and drink alcohol, because they're not smokable they're not addictive?

      Oh, and more importantly:
      Who Kills Over Weed?
      Cops?
      Drug Dealers?
The ones profiting over it being illegal?

      What are you talking about?

      That is absolutely irrelevant.

If they treated the plant with the same respect they treat alcohol or tobacco, and with less disdain and hesitancy they use for narcotics, there would be less "addiction" problems.

    • I have always been a proponent of legalizing marijuana, not because I smoke it. It's illegal and I still smoke it. My mother suffered greatly with man-made drugs. As matter of fact, it killed her. But that is another rant.
Marijuana has been used medicinally for thousands of years and now for past 70 years been illegal because major drug companies want to make money.
You cannot patent marijuana, although there are changes there too. I am sure once it becomes legal, major drug companies will go the route of GMO's and say "you cannot use the seeds and plant again without paying us." (there is story posted in here about this very thing)

you're probably right. but they'll have to take it from my cold dead hands. its in our constitution that we cannot be taxed on what we make (or grow) on our own property. of course that gets pushed aside every day
