Of course, we now know from the torture memos and the US Senate committee probe and various press reports, that the "Gitmo-izing" of Iraq was happening just at the time Alyssa got swept up in it.
Spc. Alyssa Peterson was one of the first female soldiers who died in Iraq. Her death under these circumstances should have drawn wide attention. It's not exactly the Tillman case, but a cover-up, naturally, followed.
Peterson, 27, a Flagstaff, Ariz., native, served with C Company, 311th Military Intelligence BN, 101st Airborne. She was a valuable Arabic-speaking interrogator assigned to the prison at our air base in troubled Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq. According to official records, she died on Sept. 15, 2003, from a "non-hostile weapons discharge."
A "non-hostile weapons discharge" leading to death is not unusual in Iraq, often quite accidental, so this one apparently raised few eyebrows. The Arizona Republic, three days after her death, reported that Army officials "said that a number of possible scenarios are being considered, including Peterson's own weapon discharging, the weapon of another soldier discharging, or the accidental shooting of Peterson by an Iraqi civilian." And that might have ended it right there.

Wow awesome post, horrid content. This is why America needs to prosecute those who ordered and oversaw the torture.

So sad. It was heart breaking to hear the family say that they didn't even know she had deployed to Iraq when they were told she was killed.

I can believe that she her spirit was broken by the seeing the sudden and powerful difference between what she believed about the United States and it's military service, and the wrenching evil reality of it she was being forced to participate in.
As a soldier you are taught you have no choice but to obey.
That's a deathly trap for those with a conscience.
Her notebook and the testimony of her friend supports that outcome.
Again, when are we going to bring the real criminals here to justice? - 1 year ago

So she refused to torture one person, the guilt ate away at her for a few days, and she shot herself?
Sounds like the silencing of a naysayer. - 1 year ago

Its erroneous to assume that one single cause resulted in the death of this woman assuming that she took her own life.

Follow the link and read the article, she left a note stating her reasons, there is also other background info that is important to understanding why she did this.

Yes, I realize that she did write a suicide note however the article does not state what was contained in it. Nor am I making light about suicide in the military. I did six years in a buried three friends from suicide.
Suicide does not have only one cause. There are many factors that lead to it which makes warning signs at times difficult to correctly recognize.

Are they sure it was suicide? Or is the suicide being used as a reason to cover up the fact that she was murdered for not wanting to go along with torture and they were afraid she would tell all? This is so sad and tragic. Another human being lost to a senseless war.

Hatred toward what?
Should we just sweep this under the rug and never address it?
I want to remind you the people who authorized it are still in the halls of our government!!!
Where are you from? Are you in the military?
Many younger people haven't seen this photos, and they quickly change there mind on the acceptability of torture when they do.

It has been vigorously debated as to whether or not water boarding constitutes torture. There was no such debate at the end of WW-2 and Japanese interrogators who had used this method were all tried and convicted of war crimes. We need to back up, bring those to justice who authorized such treatment and regain the high road that used to be ours.

Clinton was impeached. And, it wasn't "for a BJ". It was because he allegedly perjured himself and allegedly obstructed justice. Failing to see how Clinton's impeachment has anything to do with this story. You're implying that we should ignore every crime out there because, in your opinion, worst things are happening. Please, correct me if I'm off base here.

I think you're missing the point. He allegedly got a BJ while at work. He allegedly abused his power to sexually harass an intern.
I've heard of people being fired from their jobs for much, much less. So, why does the president get to slide off with a slap on the wrist? If I'm in a position of power, if I'm abusing that power to get sex out of my underlings, I get sued, I get fired, I get all sorts of consequences.

When will those that caused this tragedy be called to account. The Architects of similar policies where hung after World War II, and our 43rd President now brags that torture was one of the things hew would do all over again.

If you couldn't already tell from my picture I'm not a huge environmentalist.
The other things you mentioned are related, they involve hate.
Torture however is something that most of the world agrees is wrong, Bushes grandfather helped support Nazi Germany during WWII, and it seems he passed that disregard for human life and hatred for the United States of America to his grandson.
