New Dollar, Dollar Bill Ya-all?

Organized by creative strategy consultant Richard Smith, the Dollar ReDe$ign Project is soliciting ideas for the dollar bill of the future. "Our great 'rival', the Euro, looks so spanky in comparison it seems the only clear way to revive this global recession is to rebrand and redesign," the project notes on its website.
Fisher started the project in with the intent of "trying to find a catalyst to restart our economy" he told Fox News. The recent competition is now closed, and voting ends on September 30. "This has touched people's hearts," Fisher said, and "people feel the dollar touches their lives."
The leading vote-getter for this year's competition (pictured below) was submitted by British duo Dowling Duncan, which features a unique vertical design.

Isn't it enough that they've redesign the existing bills and coins several times in the past decade already. Besides wouldn't they have to make new security measures now to protect the authenticity of the new bill designs first before they started printing them? That would set back their release into circulation by quite a bit I would think.
Unless they already have new security measures created or modified for the new bills, which that case means it's been in the works for a while now and all that's left is deciding the pretty pictures to plaster on them. - 1 year ago

first step in a long-range plan towards one world currency?
by getting people acclimated to this, they reduce resistance to the idea of changing our currency and begin to provide a smoother transition to the change, wait, change who can believe in?
nothing is ever what it seems anymore, there is always some corporate-owned, scheming, federal government incentive to power behind it all.

It certainly is more cost effective to keep what we have. But our adherence to the greenback is disappointing. Psychologically, it is a stable symbol, but it also says nothing of the future. I for one welcome a redesign. After all, it is worthless, so, it could at the very least look good.
These vertical bill designs are kind of sexy.

There is a problem with this idea. The mint does not take outside designs for paper money. Yes for coins, they will tap non mint artists; but for bills, the exacts and designs are all handled in house.
Those portraits on our currency are micro engraved and take 80 hours a piece. The exacts of the design may change, but the green back is here to stay.

While I agree that spending money on designing money doesn't seem like a very good way of using tax dollars at the moment, I AM forced to admit that in a country with our incredible expertise in commercial art and design, the artistic quality of our money would render a sloth comatose. I am not sure we would even have to pay to have it done. Can you imagine what many/most artists or commercial designers would give to be able to say/put on their resume that they designed the billions of pieces of paper U.S. currency used all over the world?

I agree. We should now spend a billion dollars redesigning the dollar. We need to make it biodegradable. Wouldn’t want to clog the toilet after all. That way we can use it as toilet paper the moment the world stops pretending our dollar or anyone’s currency is actually worth something. Hey, toilet paper has value! That will make the dollar number one in the world again (for number two)! Don’t thank me, just doing my part as an American. Giggles!

This is from the organization making the designs:
"It seems so obvious to us that the 'only' realistic way for a swift economic recovery is through a thorough, in-depth, rebranding scheme – starting with the redesign of the iconic US Dollar"Yes, the reason why the US is tanking is because the dollar is ugly...

Of course that is not why the dollar is tanking, but distancing the dollars future from the dollars past isn't a bad thing. And a redesign would be a very small part of that process.

A redesign will do nothing for the economy, but on a graphic design note (pun intended), holy crap, those look amazing!!
The use of different sizes and colors help people who are visually impaired, and speak to how we "see" our country today.
Of course, there will be an uproar over who gets put on what bill, but if putting Reagan (or an image of the Tea Party) on a 20 will soothe the right-wingers, I'm for it. - 1 year ago

I'm failing to see why Obama gets the honor of being on the "New dollar". He's been in term for how long? He's done exactly what for us that deserves this great notoriety? Whether you like Obama or not, there are far more worthier people to be on the dollar than this guy. This is idol worship.
Not to mention, can we really afford to revamp our currency? Money is money regardless of what it looks like. It's not a fashion statement. Sure, revamp for security reasons to prevent counterfeiting. (Isn't that what we just got done doing?)
Why are we trying so much to be like Europe when our founding fathers fought so hard to disconnect from them?
If you want to reinvent the dollar, how about you start with the budget first?

Those aren't actually what any new bills will look like. Just ideas people came up with. I don't even think the fed has thought about redesigning the dollar, this is just a private website. Actually, having a sitting president on the $1 could make sense-- they get reprinted so often that we can afford to change the image every 4 or 8 years while keeping the rest of the redesign the same.
People would start to see U.S. Currency as "collector's items" again... and anything that encourages Americans to save their money instead of spending it is a good thing!!...just my 2¢ *rim shot*
