The cop had to know the danger posed by this particular martial arts maneuver. Justice demands he be charged with attempted murder in the 1st degree.

Ragan, I agree with you. A war veteran shouldn't automatically be preferred over a non-veteran to be a police officer. However, candidates with military experience do demonstrate a higher tactical awareness. Something that is very valuable in police work especially in higher crime areas. We as citizens should feel content that are local officials in charge of hiring cops conduct thorough background screenings and psychological assessments to advert any potential PTSD event from a sworn officer.
We as Americans can't "sit back and let the country turn violent." We as citizens are afforded the right to do something about that. Keep this in mind, there are a percentage of police officers in the U.S. today who joined just for that very reason- to NOT sit back and let it turn violent. - 2 years ago

I live near vancouver ( wasington, not canada ), around here you rarely hear about police killing people. But in the last two weeks there have been seven people shot and killed by the cops. One of them was also a veteran. The rise in
violent police activity is curious, but not suprising. I'm starting to wonder if the
constitution even applies to American life anymore. - 2 years ago

If the people let everyone from the President down to the town or county cop, commit national and international crimes and they do not even make an effort to reign them in or hold them accountable, then you are asking for a police state. You vote in and elect known corrupt politicians and criminals and you have tghe right to complain??? The people have given cops the power over life and death and too many feel the power when putting on a uniform. Look ast the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have been trained to kill just like a hardened criminals. But they do flip out and never recover from PTSD. Returning tough guys from Iraq should never be permitted to be cops. The problem is that the American people just set back and let the country turn Violent. Politicians reign free with out civilian oversight.

That is why I said the escalation of force. Only use enough force necessary to overcome the force of an assailant. Protect and serve yes. A lot of cops join departments because they watch too many movies and think it's all shooting, car chases, and kickin ass. A cop's most powerful weapon is his/her mouth. Only good cops will know that....

Ok, lets turn the table. The cop gets hurt..... You won't see anything more than a 30 second clip of an unfortunate incident, send him flowers, see ya later to his crapy Florida pension, have his kids grow up without father..... Maybe a little extreme but this is a reality for some police officers. Officer safety comes first. In this case the escalation of force should prevail. An 84 year old drunk shouldn't have been body slammed. Any one of the "come along" holds would of subdued this guy. All in all, when looking at a case like this, remember, there are several factors that all of us commenting on here don't know because we weren't there. If this cop f**kd up, don't take the bad decisions of the 10% and related it to ALL cops. Remember, they coming to save you when you call 911.

Unbelievable.
The cops are just really out of control with events like this one and all the tasering of children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Something has to be done, legislatively, to rein them in.

Lying cops are getting out of control. If the cops have witnesses for a crime against you the cops believe them and use them to convict you. If you have witnesses that have info that incriminates a cop they just get ignored. Funny how that works.

Why is it cops, who are citizens, are allowed to commit acts of violence, murder, racism, hate and many more and get away with it? Oh I forgot the badge and the misplaced right to brandish a gun on their hip. I am so tired of cops in this nation

If you can't think of a better way to deal with an 84 year old man then slamming him head first into the ground you probably shouldn't have a job where you may come into contact with one.
A year from now this will all be forgotten and this guy will still be on the beat.

I used to be naive and think our boys in blue were good, caring people. A year ago that changed real quick when I had problems with an off-duty cop that was under the influence of alcohol and meth and decided to pull his gun on me for no reason--in the middle of a crowded restaurant.
Needless to say, I was the only one who filed a complaint and he got a slap on the wrist. He's still on the force.
I wish I could go back to being naive and stupid. At least then I felt safe. Watching videos like this, hearing news about this stuff happening all the time, it's horrifying.

I said for Obama to speak out against this type of policing and abuse of their power. I also said that his Administration...which includes Eric Holder AG and the Justice Department....be used to investigate and bring to justice the renegade law enforcement departments....that is within the jurisdiction and purview of his administration....And I also said that the AG and JD should use Joe Arpaio as their first renegade law enforcement official to make an example out of him so that none will follow in Joe's footsteps.
Also I never claimed to be a scholar on Law....I am however a student at a university studying political science and Romance Languages....Spanish and French.

Actually I am very aware of how the police feel about the average citizen...we are all a threat to them until proven otherwise.
I have a record of working with and cooperating with law enforcement to bring down real criminals....particularly one that beat beat his wife and then burned her unconscious body to death. I have coordinated the information and detail to the FBI and America's Most Wanted.
By no means do I hate and am unwilling to cooperate with law enforcement...but I am against the corruption that is pervasive throughout the country....many of these officers who commit the brutality think they are gods.

oh hell, I've been to both of your states, and lived in Florida for a while, and I am constantly bashing both Texas and Florida, but that is largely because they both elected a Bush as governor...and then what happened? My state elected its own pin-headed, moralistic, dip shit of a Republican governor, so I really should STFU about both of your states, but you know...I'm just not going to do that because Florida and Texas bashing is so damn much fun...and besides, you both redeem your states in my opinion...two of my favorite people on Current. All a cop has to say is "He took a swing at me!" and he's off the hook.
Beating up old people and teenagers never seems to get old to these underdeveloped roid burnouts who think carrying a gun compensates for being lousy in bed.
Cops seem to see every citizen as a posable threat. And I understand all of that "in the line of duty" garbage but does it apply when breaking the neck of a 84 year old man who would have succumbed to a proper full nelson? (which would allow the officer to live out his fantasy of being a pro wrestler) - 2 years ago

Another example of how a few that serve, treat those that have served.
The only 'service' not afforded veterans through the VA, is legal counsel and law enforcement is very aware of it.
This 'officer should have been immediately fired and held on counter charges. To treat a veteran like this in a time of war... Is this what people that served in their youth have to look for in the twilight of their lives? Sickening, will it happen to your family?
Granted, physical contact was made but a simple wrist or arm lock would had been more than enough to subdue a geriatric citizen... charging the elderly veteran with battery on a law enforcement officer 1:34?

hey i hate pigs as much as the next guy, but the man fucked up by putting his hands on the officer. the officer could have backed up and warned him or put him in a wrist lock or something. i dont care how you slice it, using a piledriver on an 84 yr old man is not standard police procedure and this officer should be brought up on charges for excessive force. sadly.. that probably wont happen.
