Sir Alex Ferguson has placed the media attention on the 24 year old's private life as reason into the bad start in the season for Wayne Rooney. Last season he scored 34 goals for the club, but so far he's only scored one goal from a penalty in his five match appearances.

"It is the first time in Rooney's career that his performances seem to have been adversely affected by some of the headlines he has attracted, and Ferguson painted the picture of a man not enjoying his professional work. "He would like to keep playing with freedom, but the siege of the tabloids can wear out anyone."-Guardian

Though the article notes this isn't first time Ferguson has criticised the press with a cancellation of a weekly press conference this week and his boycott of BBC press since 2004 after a documentary about his son.
