$7 Million Homeland Security Plane Used To Find Marijuana

McNeely said the use of a Homeland Security plane for a local investigation of marijuana businesses shocked her.

“I think it’s a misuse of resources,” she said. “It’s ridiculous to bring a Border Patrol Plane to Colorado Sorings for marijuana. They should be securing our borders.”

    • Because when you're going to waste time an taxpayers money, you gotta do it in style. Why don't we take that $7 mil and spend it putting criminals in jail who actually need to be there.
      There is no evil drug dealer in Colorado Springs. No reason for homeland security. No pro pot terrorism in Colorado.

    • That's not a Border Patrol plane. It's an ICE plane. Either way, both agencies have jurisdiction across the entire US. One of their aims is to uphold Federal drug laws. I guess they don't strike gold with every investigative attempt, but in exchange for freedom from tyranny, the US tax payer has to put up with the cost of an investigation that doesn't violate Constitutional rights. Else, the police could just bash in the doors, arrest who they want, seize what they want, and make up what they want in a report. I'd rather spend the extra money to protect my rights and privacy.

      NASA's budget for 2010 is $17,911,000,000 (yeah, $17.911 Billion). The plane costs less than a 25th of 1 percent of NASA's budget (yeah, .039%). In other words, NASA could afford over 2,500 of those planes, this year.

      Department of Homeland Security encompasses the entire US Coast Guard, US Secret Service, ICE, CBP, and TSA. And those are just a few of the bigger names that fall under the DHS umbrella. DHS also has more than 12 times the employees of NASA.

      It's also worth noting that the customs agencies actually make the US some money. (To be fair: IRS does too, but they take it all from the taxpayer.)
