Oakleigh Marshall not allowed to compete for court
MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - Some Mona Shores High School students say administrators stole the homecoming king throne from the rightful winner -- a transgender senior.
The controversy is playing out in the school's hallways, and on Facebook.
Some classmates believe the crown belongs to Oakleigh Reed -- who was born as Oakleigh Marie, but who now goes as Oakleigh Marshall, or Oak for short.
In fact, friends have started a Facebook page, titled, "Oak is My King."
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=103699403028170
"It's the senior class that votes for their representative," Reed said. "What they did was taking away the voice of the senior class."
Assistant Superintendent Todd Geerlings said the issue is simple: The ballots gave two choices -- vote for a boy for king and a girl for queen.
And, in school records, he said, Oakleigh is still listed as a female.
The 17-year-old says the gender struggle has been life-long -- with sports, family and friends, even band camp. After years of counseling, Oakleigh plans a sex change operation at age 18.
Already, the school has made concessions.
"They let me wear a male tux for band uniform, and they're going to let me wear the male robe and cap for graduation."
Teachers, Oakleigh said, use male pronouns.
"They call me Oak, and they say, he, him, his," the teen said.
Oak, an honor student, campaigned for homecoming king on Facebook -- a one-day campaign.
"I just said, 'Vote for me for homecoming king.' I don't see why there's any reasons why someone who's different shouldn't be on court. I thought, 'Hey, why not put myself out there? I have just as much qualifications as anyone else in the school."
The campaign took off.
"I knew I had a lot of votes because people were telling me in the hallway, 'Hey, I voted for you, I voted for you.'"
Oakleigh was overwhelmed by the support of classmates.
Then, last Monday, the principal called Oak into her office.
"They told me that they took me off because they had to invalidate all of my votes because I'm enrolled at Mona Shores as a female," Oakleigh said.
Oakleigh was happy with the support from classmates, but "sometimes it's nice to have something tangible."
The teen's mother says she's angry.
"He was voted for homecoming king and, according to the votes, he should have been homecoming king, and it's just sad, and it just breaks my heart that all these people all voted and it was taken away, it was completely taken away from him."
The ACLU may enter this case . Oakleigh said he'd be willing to talk with them.

So I see that the argument against allowing this person to be the king he was elected to be has support from some here on current.
What I'm not quite understanding is why it matters that Oak was not born a guy. He got elected by his classmates, the school is who made this into a problem, and for reasons I don't understand. It's not like he's going to be a real king, just a phony high school one, for one night.
Is it a problem because we might offend the powerful god of Science? Or Nature?
Why does not being born a boy constitute such a problem regarding the subject of prom kings? - 2 years ago

simply, and this continues to be hard for you, like many others on here, because "it"(it meaning the subject of the article) is a "SHE", not a "HE" as you claim
in a year, or less, when "it" is a "HE" and not a "SHE", as the RULES (get THAT, another thing you and others don't understand) dictate, "HE" would be free to be the King
for the ump-teenth time, this is not a gender-biased issue... it is an issue with the RULES. "it" could have petitioned to change the rules... "it" did not! and therefore "it" must obey them!

ZaXXoN2010:
Oh, yes. The sacred rules of the prom court. Let us not forget those.
It's a high school prom. These rules (that according to you no one here understands) are a moot point in this issue. The school could have just as easily changed the rules as "IT" could have petitioned to change them. They chose to stop counting the votes, claiming a technicality because the winner was born a woman. Since they're letting Oak wear a male graduation cap and gown, and a male band uniform, it obviously is not an issue of the rules, since it has been a rule in most schools that the clothes assigned from the school be gender appropriate. I had classmates raise issues with my school in the past over this. This is the school using the sanctity of the Prom as an excuse to shut out an ideology that they don't agree with, all the while claiming it's for the good of the school. And yes, in a year, after the operation, then Oak would be free to be king. Except for the whole part where prom will be over. So he'll stay ineligible.
If this isn't a gender related issue, why is the principal quoted as saying:
"The school must be consistent when it comes to gender." - 2 years ago

Without the rules, there wouldn't be an argument, which they needed to exclude him from the race. They counted his votes until they saw he might have enough to win. They didn't mind if he ran and lost, because it makes them look progressive. But they wouldn't let him be king, because he was born a woman, something his classmates do not treat him like.
The rules are just an excuse. The school is not bound to the rules of prom. - 2 years ago

not as an "excuse"... they applied the RULES because they are... novel idea here... THE RULES!contradiction of the day - "the rules are a moot point" / "without the rules, there wouldn't be an argument, which they needed"

Hahaha you haven't read the story and your going to tell me to.
That's funny.
They said they stopped counting the ballots BEFORE they were through."There is no way to know because they stopped counting Oakleigh's votes."
"We just stopped (counting) when we noticed an ineligible person was running for that category."In absolutely NO place whatsoever in the article does it state that they finished counting the votes.
It's the schools contradiction, not mine. Yes the rules ARE a moot point, that the school needed for a leg to stand on.

To me this is simple, the students voted and they have the right to pick who they want. If you don't want the students to pick, then there shouldn't have been an election in the first place. They're voices were heard, their choice was obvious, so the school should suck it up and deal with that fact.
If they want to make some kind of impact, don't hinder your students voices because you don't think its right. Let them be heard, and get over it. It's just that simple, really.
He won, give him what he earned, sheesh.

So...She's still a girl, and hasn't had the operation yet. That doesn't make her "transgender". That makes her a girl posing as a boy. -which technically doesn't make you a male.
Now, if she fails a year, has the surgery, and changes her status from female, to male...then she has an argument, and a leg to stand on.
How is this news?

Oh, good stuff for the discussion. Thanks!
Okay, well let us address what you said. The only way a person/patient can get the surgery in the US, is after two shrinks have done an evaluation. If the evaluation shows that the patient has a different mind from their body when it comes to gender, the patient can have surgery. However, there is one more hoop the patient has to pass. The two shrinks also have to state that they believe the patient is a good candidate for surgery. Mitigating circumstances like organic mental illness, schitsophrenia, bipolar, borderline personality disorder, etc, often inhibit the patient from moving forward. But in most cases even being mentally ill does not inhibit surgery. The reason is that just because a person has gender dysphoria, and is also bipolar, does not mean you only treat the bipolar. You treat both.
So two shrinks have to state that the patient is mentally the gender the patient says they are regardless of what is between the patients legs. Much like a hermaphrodite can say, I am a man, and everyone accepts that because he should know regardless of what is in between his legs. Since Oakleigh Marshall is a man in his head, he should be able to run. After all, if a man in a wheelchair cannot perform sex like a guy, no one says he is no longer a man. He is a crippled man. In many ways, Oakleigh Marshall is crippled as well. Some states wisely consider people like Oakleigh disabled, as in socially disabled, which is no better then a man in a wheelchair not being able to enter all buildings. The man in the wheelchair is socially disabled if he cannot enter a building to partake in social interaction, business or private. Oakleigh is socially disabled because society has uneducated or bigoted reasons to discriminate. - 2 years ago

As far as technicalities goes.... It makes sense not to give her the throne because she has a vagina. Administrators should have opted to give her the prom queen title.
But..... Ya it is kind of a dick move, she won prom king title, she should get it.
Or they need to accommodate these peoples needs and have a prom king prom queen and a prom halfski.... just kidding

Well, Oakleigh Marshall is a guy, so he should be able to run for King. BUT, you have a really good point. Why not just call it the Royal Court, then who is King and Queen does not matter. The person, who becomes King or Queen, should have nothing to do with their outward presenting genitalia. The kids would have fun with it. I also think most of the time the student body would elect a girl for Queen and a guy for King, just statistically because there are more straights in the crowd. But on the occasion year when the student body decides to break with the common just for fun and friendship, terrific! It is their time after all.

“I don't think I've ever met anyone who takes this shit seriously.” Perfect, exactly! People with reason, and I am so glad most of the youth are reasonable, are not bothered by T issues. I think a lot of it is simply being secure in who they are, and simply wishing the T folks well. In fact, my impression of most younger people is that IF they have an issue with T folks, it is an issue of celebrating diversity. It’s like I hear, ‘Hurray you’re unique, that is cool, come hang with us, let us celebrate all of our diverse personalities together!’
So why the change? EDUCATION! The ignorant bag on the educational system as something to be done with. However, the educated teacher that corrects the student for laughing at a student who is gay, or different in some way, is setting a better tone for all of us. As children, if a teacher socializes the kids to be non judgmental, it becomes an accepted norm for everyone. It is good for the GLBTIQ (rstuvwxyz. Little joke), it is also good for society as it imprints people to treat everyone with respect and equality. - 2 years ago

With a viewpoint like that it's understandable why you assume they're just complicating things. Minorities have been complicating things for years, and I am very grateful for it. And that's the whole point, you narrow person... Not everyone identifies with their gender. Some are born identifying with a different gender. Whether he is a she or she is a he just doesn't matter!!
RESPECT the wishes of the individual human, and there is no room for error!

just to clarify... this girl has the surgery to mutilate her body into LOOKING like a male, then i guess they could make her King.
tho even that doesnt make much sense when she will still be a female (remember the nutjob on Oprah that decided she was a man, and then decided to get pregnant? yeah, that made a lot of sense!?!?) - 2 years ago

and THAT is my point, you silly kid... it IS a mental illness to identify with a gender other than that which science & nature naturally assign you.
by your reasoning, the mentally handicapped that think they are Superman should be allowed to leap off tall buildings... i mean, hey, they believe they can fly! who are you to criticize their illogical dreams??? LOL

If mentally handicapped people want to jump off of buildings, let them. Your comparisons are baseless. Are you saying that changing one's gender is equal to thinking oneself is superman and having the ability to fly? What an interesting opinion!

I LOVE to see all the wacko rednecks that come out of the woodwork ANY TIME there is a story posted about transgendered or homosexual kids from the south/midwest.... It's so entertaining.
You'll spend a few days babbling on this story and a few others like it, and then you'll fade away again.... It's like clockwork, really!

did i not say ovaries & a womb?
hmmmm... brush up on your reading comprehension skills down at the adult learning annex.... classes are affordable
and as a side note, that would be exactly why women hate even they THOUGHT of a hysterctomy so much...
you would understand... if you REALLY were a woman, not just a dude in drag with implants & pills for your voice/hair/boobs... LOL

Just as a case in point, what gives you the right to define anyone else? I feel raped when you bag on me for being different then most folks. Raped, so accurate a feeling. I have been around the block a few times, so feeling like that is rape; there is a sickness in hate that emotionally kills just as horribly. Thank you for emotionally raping me like so many others. I hope you are a proud member of that club.

You know a hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, which is the womb you refer to. And girls can also lose their ovaries for a various number of medical reasons, one way being a hysterectomy.
So what the hell are you talking about?
Of course women hate the idea of a hysterectomy.
Do you like the idea of prostate cancer? And by the way no college class in the world is going to aid in understanding your posts.

i fully realize why you fail to understand any of my logically presented, rational, well reasoned posts
because you respond with emotion, not logic, and guess what? that is OK!!!science frightens people. i get that! you are as scared of being told that what you believe is illogical the same way religious people like your parents probably felt when you came out of the closet
or the way the Romans felt when Galileo told them the earth was not the center of the universe... it frightened them
and now scientific facts frighten you. i hope someday you will come to understand - 2 years ago

Do you think about anything you say or does it come out in its earliest form?
You're talking a lot but you're not saying anything, and you're definitely not answering my question.
Women can naturally lose their uterus and ovaries if they develop cancer and have to get a hysterectomy. So how does it make any sense in your rational, well reasoned posts when you claim that ovaries and the womb are the defining quality of a woman. If science scares me why am I talking about medical science and you are talking about fear and mental superiority?
What is it about what I believe that is illogical? What is it I believe?
Oh, and my family isn't religious and I've never spent a prolonged period of time in a closet. I'm also not gay.You need to learn to properly explain yourself before you worry about the comprehension skills of anyone on this site.

"gender" has more than one valid definition. In ordinary speech, its interchangeable with "sex" to denote the condition of being male or female
the definitions are different re-biological & sociological use, however
social sciences approach gender as a social construct
natural sciences re- biology and behavioral differences in males & females influence development of gender in humansthanks for playing though!

you, sir, are a racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobe!!! mocking my reading comprehension skills based solely on my hair color? for shame!!!
i suppose you are right in 1 respect, clearly i didn't come right out and explain to you that i am mocking you openly, and with aplomb!
sorry to hear you are still "closeted"
