How much do Americans know about Islam? Shariah Law? How much is propaganda? How much is reality? Is Islam a religion and if so, who are its adherents? Is it peaceful? Is it tolerant? Are there moderates, and if so, who and where are they? It is not easy to answer all of these questions in one "swoop", but a good place to start would be with Wafa Sultan.
It's a good bet that the majority of Examiner readers do not know this woman. She is very familiar to me, as her lifestory came to the forefront of some of our discussions on the Women's Lens Blog, which I founded in 2007. Wafa Sultan was born in Syria, where she spent the first thirty years of her life. She is lucky in that she was able to leave her country, come to the United States and become a citizen. She does not wear a veil, or a burqa, or anything other than Western clothing. She has come to embrace, cherish and greatly value American democracy and freedom.
