"To put people behind bars for possessing or smoking pot is absolutely absurd. It would make more sense to put people behind bars for smoking cigarettes."
10 years ago, Anderson was criticized for saying America's drug laws need to be changed.
He felt – and feels - that they were expensive and ineffective.
Not only does Anderson think he was right then, he now says the way things are headed, pot will someday be legal all over the country - even in Utah,
"I think someday the people of Utah will take a good look at this and say this doesn't make sense anymore."
While he wouldn't or couldn't say it a decade ago when he was mayor, Monday we asked Anderson whether he is now willing to say, yes, pot should be
legalized?
To which he replied,
"Yes, I think marijuana should be legalized."

Really?!?! Utah?
Don't they still have wierd Mormon laws about alcohol?
i heard once that bartenders could not legally pour the drinks in front of the customer, they would have to pour it in another room because of some religious hookum.I can't see Utah as being a state that would legalize marijuana.
But i guess if you have 4 wives nagging at you about your 13 children you might legalize anything to relieve the stress. - 1 year ago

It's really ignorant to post something like that.
No, bartenders can pour drinks in front of customers.
Not all of us are LDS, not all LDS are polygamist.
Our alcohol laws aren't "weird", they're strict. We also have the lowest DUI rate per capita, thankfully.

Yes, in some restuarants they do pour drink in another room. Plus in some places you have to finish the drink( if you can call them drinks) first before they will bring you another. AND they meter the drinks.

I don't think it's weird for them to limit how much you have to drink. It restricts people's inane ability to drink and drive. Not to mention, if you order alcohol in a restaurant, you have to order food as well. I'm incredibly happy with Utah's alcohol laws.
As for the idea that they have to pour the alcohol in another room away from the customer, I have *never* seen that so, I would like to know where you've seen this. Do you mean when they make mixed drinks behind the bar at Chili's or Applebee's?

They have a problem with music but pot is ok?
As nice as it would be to see a state like Utah legalize and decriminalize pot, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Admitting it should be legalized is a nice step, but the opinion of this one politician will not sway the voters in Utah. This article should be called "Utah politician claims pot should be legal".This Rocky Anderson fellow does however seem very astute.

Hate to bust everyone's bubble but even if California or Utah legalize it it will still be federally illegal in California and Utah. Meaning you could be arrested for having weed in either state when they legalize them.
Which is why I say we need to declare the federal drug bans unconstitutional THEN let states either ban them or legalize them according to what voters in each state want. The way ANY law should be in this country.

True, but the DEA is on the Fed's leash. It doesn't usually get the authority to roam free and contradict a President's wishes.
And if it got really bad, keep in mind that the President has the power to pardon anyone.

DEA have plenty of bureaus in all states and routinely carry out raids ESPECIALLY in California. San Diego is still the highest trafficked border crossing into America I think. Plus board agents can legally search your person, your cell phone, and your computer for nondescript 'suspected illegal activity' if you're anywhere within 150 mile of the United States border and that DOES include living within that zone. The border agents are federal police.

Seriously misleading headline.
You're talking about a state which just criminalized miscarriages, one politician saying "it will be legalized" has NO bearing on the reality of how fucking stupid the general citizens of Utah are.
To quote my friend, Texas will have state-sponsored sodomy parties before Utah legalizes pot.
Don't believe me? Go there. If you can get any Mormons to talk to you, they'll tell you that their religion has just been revised so it isn't a sin to drink Coca-Cola.
No, I did not make that up.

^'d. It would probably help Utah since they're the most depressed state if I'm not mistaken. But highly unlikely that such a conservative state (they voted more for Bush in 2004 than any other state) would legalize weed.
Edit: yeah it is:

Well being from Utah and being LDS I can assure you that there have been no revisions to the drinking of Coke, it was always up to individual's discretion. Also, there is a VERY strong libertarian movement in Utah and as such, the people in Utah would be very interested in seeing the role of the Federal and State Government's reduced considerably. I wouldn't count Utah out.

Your religion strictly bans caffeine, it was very much not up to the individual.
And a strong Libertarian streak? Really? What's all that business with the miscarriages then? Or how about those stickers on your driver's licenses? You know the ones I'm talking about.
I'm thinking you don't know your own state as well as you think. Either that or your definition of Libertarian is out of whack.

My religion has something called the Word of Wisdom. That instructs us to eat food in season, in moderation, and not smoke, drink or have hot drinks. Those are Coffee and Tea. The % of caffeine in a can of Coke vs. a Cup of Coffee is quite different so there has never been an official church position on it.
And lets say there was one. That is OUR religion. We do not expect others who live in our state to live to our code. Evidence? You can buy a Beer in Utah. Starbucks is in Utah. So why would one intoxicating drug get preferential treatment to an arguably less harmful drug?

The bill that would try and stop pregnant mothers from beating their own bodies to force a miscarriage? You have to admit thats some pretty brutal stuff. Not something I know much about personally so I'll defer to the courts.
Sticker on my drivers license? Sorry I don't know what your talking about.
Personal Liberty is very crucial to the LDS religion. It is even mentioned in our scriptures in multiple places. But the LDS church and the State of Utah are two different things.

Utah also has the lowest drunk driving rates.
In 2008 Utah had the lowest alcohol-impaired driving fatality rate – 0.21 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel (VMT)

Also drink a lot less per capita.
Hopefully, decriminalization/legalization of marijuana doesn't happen in Utah.

Never had an official position? Maybe not in the sense that you didn't pass a referendum. Otherwise it's a plainly obvious fact. The water only wedding reception I attended wasn't very ambiguous about that.
I'm thrilled you think it's an accomplishment that your state doesn't ban products on the basis of its most popular religion. But to a normal state, that's considered a pretty basic constitutional right, right up there with you won't be thrown in jail for criticizing the local leaders.
The bill criminalizes miscarriages and puts the burden of proof on the mother to prove that it was actually accidental and not intentional, making it both a guilty before proven innocent law and also a blatant establishment of a religious claim since it's been decided by the Supreme Court that a fetus is not a human being and cannot be equated to murder.
Oh really? You mean you don't know anything about those little stickers you can get 0on your driver's licenses that say you're a Mormon? Certainly not so the police know to treat you better or anything like that.
I really don't care what your religion says about personal liberty, they don't follow it by any means.
And yeah, sure, lots of religions have goofy fucking rules about not eating certain kinds of food for "purity" reasons. But yours is the only one I know that changes its own rules once it places investment in the Coca-Cola company.

Out of respect for those who don't wish to drink Coke, there are usually alternatives available or the caffeine free alternative is made the default. Or water.
Saladin, its ALWAYS been like this. Ever since statehood. Its not a "new" thing.
I am not familiar with the miscarriage laws in Utah.
I have never heard of these stickers. Can you find proof that they exist? And if they do. . . do you REALLY think the police officers would treat you any differently? Most of the ones that I have interacted with have gotten quite a kick out of a fine upstanding LDS member breaking the law in some way. Especially on Sunday Mornings when they are out working and we are all speeding around trying to get to church on time. They find it quite funny. :-) Don't really blame them.
I personally believe personal liberties are very important but I do not speak for the entire church or represent it in any way.
The rule NEVER CHANGED on Coke. You will not find a single place in any of our older handbooks that describe the consumption of Coke as being a violation of the Word of Wisdom.
