These people are the type of vain and shallow people that our country is infested with like a cancer. These type of people don't deserve to be getting the benefit of this education at this institution for being such heartless and destructive forces on the campus and endangering vulnerable people in the population.

And people wonder why people strike out and commit horrible violent acts, this poor guy killed himself but just what if it had sent him on a killing rampage?
People who are so stupid to not think of potential consequences for their actions, they deserve everything the law can dish out when they act on those actions. - 1 year ago

Their actions lead to a suicide. How would you feel if Clementi was your child? A friend? These two should be punished to the full extent of the law. Molly is, and Dharun may be (unsure of his age) legal adults; they should be treated as such. This behavior might be admissable or understandable for adolescents, preteens, or early teenage years. By the time one is in college, this sort of shit should be long behind someone. If he hadn't killed himself, many other terrible things may have happened to him, including beatings and abuse (that would have likely gone not reported), further exposure of the sex tape, etc...
Lock 'em up and throw away the key for a few years to make them really think about the consequences of their actions. Sick bastards.

Is the 'Bullying Epidemic' a Media Myth?
A series of suicides by gay teens have prompted fears of a bullying epidemic, but is any of this new?The Clementi Webcam case in particular is sure to become latest potent symbol for why, in the digital age, schools need bullying policies and states need stronger legislation to punish bullies. But the larger question may not be whether these students should be held accountable—they should—but whether the bullying of today is truly any worse than the bullying of past.

Good thing that we have legislation (failed during original hearings earlier this year) already written by the ADL to use these tragedies to control and monitor free speech on the internet so that something like this never happens again.
Cyberbullying Hearing Goes Badly for Liberals
"The House Subcommittee hearing today on two "anti-cyberbullying" bills went very poorly for the Anti-Defamation League, architect of these bills, and their two primary sponsors, Rep. Linda Sanchez and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Sanchez sponsored the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act, HR 1966, and Wasserman Schultz the AWARE Act (Adolescent Web Awareness Requires Education)."

The thing is, bullying may not be any worse, necessarily, but with the addition of technology and the very quick spreading of information via the internet, bullies have all-new (and typically more psychologically damaging) routes to bully others with. Many areas of the country are increasing in tolerance, but that does not mean that bullying and/or discrimination is any better.
I think the larger question is not whether today's bullying is any worse than the past, but what we can do to stop this sort of bullying and degrading attitude -today-, and knock it out once and for all so future generations do not have to suffer these attitudes from others, and minimize occurrences such as this.

Ah the good old court of public opinion... If its verdicts were official, half the world would face summary execution.
What they did was truly horrible, but they're not responsible for a person taking the choice to kill himself. That's giving them way too much credit AND absolving society for still having a bias against gay people that encourages persecution, as well as all the stupid people who left the horrible and offensive comments that contributed to the boy's malaise.
But at the end of the day, a suicide is their own executioner and atavistic retribution against symbols of the tragedy is really just as bad as the deed itself.Their crime was making and posting the videos, not the death.

Yeah, but would this kid have killed himself if those two had never secretly filmed him having sex and then posted it on the internet? Would "all the stupid people who left the horrible and offensive comments that contributed to the boy's malaise," ever been posted by those people if it were not for the video?
and who are you to judge this kid's suicide? You are not him, and you have no idea the kind of damage the whole incident had on him, or why he decided to kill himself.
"That's giving them way too much credit AND absolving society for still having a bias against gay people that encourages persecution..."
yeah, you can blame society, but that does not mean Dharan and Molly's actions should be excused. they should be given some credit for his death because their actions seem to have led to his death. Would he have killed himself anyway even if the video had never been taken? It is very unlikely that any definitive answer to that question could ever be determined now, but seeing as how there is a correlation between the events and Tyler's suicide, you can argue that Dharan and Molly's actions were a determining factor in Tyler's decision to kill himself.
Dharan and Molly will get charged with more than invasion of privacy, and they will also probably get sued by Tyler's family and lose.
And they are terrible, terrible people

I never excused their actions in filming and posting that video!
What I question is the popular cry for revenge against them.
Suicide is a terrible thing for all involved and it is very difficult and problematic to apportion blame because of it, however simplistic and straightforward you think the situation is, the reality of what goes on inside a person's head is always far more complicated.
-This is what I read in every single time a psychiatrist specialising in the area comments on a suicide. If anything this situation most highlights society's lingering problems with homophobia and the general culture of persecution homosexual people still face.
Too put too much blame on people like these two you overshadow or even disregard this fact, which is actually far more important! - 1 year ago

Eh. You can still highlight that fact and throw these pieces of scum into jail for a few years.
I don't think they are directly responsible for his death, but they are most certainly indirectly responsible. I may not have meant to hit that pedestrian as they were walking in front of me in dark clothes at night, but I sure as hell killed them (hypothetical situation). Should I go to jail for manslaughter? The law thinks so, and most people agree that in a position of power and/or responsibility, one should always look to make sure their actions are not going to severely harm another.
I'd say having a secret (and illegal) camera in someone's room to film them having sex with someone that would put them in an unfavorable light to be a position of power. And I'd also say that at that moment, they were absolutely looking to severely harm someone else, perhaps not physically, but most definitely emotionally, psychologically, and socially. They may not have had the foresight that he would kill himself, but they definitely knew they were attempting their best to totally humiliate this poor kid and wreck his life.
It's manslaughter, more or less, in my eyes.

OK, this article is bogus, lol.
Hopefully you can tell from the grammar.
Delete it or change the headline.Right now, the two are only charged with 'breach of privacy.'
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/09/bias_charge_is_considered_for.html
Current needs more fact checkers, lol.
However, the prosecution is considering charging them with 'bias,' which is something like manslaughter. Personally, I don't think there's much chance of them being implicated in his murder. They might get 5 years for the privacy charge- and then they have to live the rest of their lives knowing they made him kill himself. They're already screwed psychologically.

What they did was a prime example of how people today have gotten worse. I'm sad for the family's loss, and I hope these two know what their lives are in store for. Not jail, but the fact that they have to live with what their actions has led one person to do.

Charged with what exactly? Last I checked there isn't any law against 'being a dick'. If there was I would have jailed all my bullies in high school.
That's all these two are, bullies. The decision to kill himself ultimately was with himself. You can't charge someone with murder just because their bullying lead to that person's suicide. That's not how the law works sorry folks.

Ugh. There are plenty of things to charge them with, but murder is not one of them.
It is very tragic that Clementi killed himself, and I can understand why he did it (I was a gay 18-year-old once too, from Georgia to boot), but he made his own decision, whether or not he was in his right mind when it happened.
These disgustingly cruel children already have enough on their consciousnesses to affect the rest of their lives, hopefully. The charges already leveled against them are sufficient, in my opinion. It's just a nasty situation all around.

You are right, he took his own life, but I don't think we have sufficient charges to level at the intent behind such egregious defamation and degradation of another human being's life and right to privacy. It is not enough to ask what they were thinking, I don't want to ever be exposed to the thought patterns of human beings who would use and abuse another human being this way, and there is no solace in concluding that they were not thinking at all. There has been enough media coverage of the sort of thing they did, that it is impossible to believe they were ignorant of the potential consequences of what they did to this young man. I would love to see them both in prison, for a long, long time.
