Dutch politician Geert Wilders on trial for hate crimes against Muslims

Geert Wilders' remarks at the trial:

"Freedom is the most precious of all our attainments and the most vulnerable. People have devoted their lives to it and given their lives for it. Our freedom in this country is the outcome of centuries. It is the consequence of a history that knows no equal and has brought us to where we are now.

I believe with all my heart and soul that the freedom in the Netherlands is threatened. That what our heritage is, what generations could only dream about, that this freedom is no longer a given, no longer self-evident.

I devote my life to the defence of our freedom. I know what the risks are and I pay a price for it every day. I do not complain about it; it is my own decision. I see that as my duty and it is why I am standing here.

I know that the words I use are sometimes harsh, but they are never rash. It is not my intention to spare the ideology of conquest and destruction, but I am not any more out to offend people. I have nothing against Muslims. I have a problem with Islam and the Islamization of our country because Islam is at odds with freedom.

Future generations will wonder to themselves how we in 2010, in this place, in this room, earned our most precious attainment. Whether there is freedom in this debate for both parties and thus also for the critics of Islam, or that only one side of the discussion may be heard in the Netherlands? Whether freedom of speech in the Netherlands applies to everyone or only to a few? The answer to this is at once the answer to the question whether freedom still has a home in this country.

Freedom was never the property of a small group, but was always the heritage of us all. We are all blessed by it.

Lady Justice wears a blindfold, but she has splendid hearing. I hope that she hears the following sentences, loud and clear:

It is not only a right, but also the duty of free people to speak against every ideology that threatens freedom. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States was right: The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

I hope that the freedom of speech shall triumph in this trial."

Geert Wilders, some may need to be reminded, believes that Dutch troops should be recalled from Afghanistan. And that attitude is shared by many in Western Europe who are most aware of the Muslim threat within Europe. They do not believe that this is a "war against terrorism" but a war of self-defense against Islam and those who take Islam to heart, and that the American campaigns in Iraq and in Afghanistan will have no effect on the threat in Western Europe, and constitute a squandering of Western money, men, materiel, morale, and above all, of attention. Attention must be focussed not on countries already full of Musliims who should, as in Somalia, be left to stew in whatever they already stew in, but Islam itself be kept bottled up as much as possible, and that means making Western lands far less open and naively friendly to Muslims and to islam. It is not Western propaganda -- Westeern governments and elites continue to fall all over themselves to insist that there is nothing wrong, essentially wrong, or threatening, to Infidels in Islam itself, only in those who are "violent extremists" or who apparently "misunderstand" what is in Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira -- that is turning intelligent people in the West against Islam. It is the behavior of Muslims themselves, not only their physical violence and aggression toward non-Muslims in lands where Muslims dominate, and even now in Western lands, in locales where Muslims dominate,, but their demands, direct or oblique, for changes in the social arrangements, in the legal and political institutions, in the freedoms guaranteed and in those Muslims work to abolishy -- such as freedom of speech (when it comes to any criticism of Islam) and freedom of conscience (when it comes to allowing people to leave Islam if they so wish, without harm coming to them), that is changing the minds of non-Muslims, and sending them to the texts of Islam, and to the great Western scholars of Islam, and to the defectors from the Army of Islam, so that they begin to make sense of what otherwise remains incomprehensible.

Wilder's call for solidarity among all civilized societies to fight the Nazis of our times is a reminder of Churchill's comment about working together.

"If we don't all hang together, we'll 'hang' separately."

Defeating Islam is the last great battle of western civilization. Its outcome will determine whether we survive or not.

Ultimately, if the West prevails in its defence against this insidious ideology, it will owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Geert Wilders. He displays extraordinary courage in the cause of truth and freedom.

The idiots in Amsterdam need to grow some balls and back up Mr. Wilders. He is 100% correct and should be commended. So Amsterdam is now jailing people for slandering Islam? DO NOT BUY PRODUCTS from that country.

Geert Wilders is a polarizing figure, who has been extremely critical of the current political system in the Netherlands. He also has expressed his hatred for Islam not Muslims (but the difference is a bit murky to me.) The laws in the Netherlands are different then the protection the first Admen given to Hate Mongers in the United States. Hate speech cannot be equated with freedom of speech - the latter comes with great responsibility and duty. Geert is like the idiot yelling "fire!" in a packed theater that is not on fire.
