Whether they are gay or not, anyone who is a victim of anti-LGBTQ bullying or harassment is having a tough time.
Some, as we painfully were reminded this month, resort to suicide.
Right now the media is focused on five teens who committed suicide in response to anti-LGBTQ bullying. As tragic as that is, there are a lot more than five. Thanks to our readers, so far we so far have found nine.
Nine male teenagers all committed suicide in the month of September, victims of bullying. There are reports that all but one were victims of anti-LGBTQ bullying. The “type” of bullying of one, Felix Sacco, was not identified.
If nine teens died in one month from a mysterious disease, there would be marches to the White House demanding something be done.
So, aside from a press release(http://bit.ly/cvlaVP), what is being done?
> Billy Lucas (15) September 9, 2010. Indiana
> Cody J. Barker (17) September 13, 2010. Wisconsin
> Seth Walsh (13) September 19, 2010. California
> Tyler Clementi (18) September 22, 2010. New Jersey
> Asher Brown (13) September 23, 2010. Texas
> Harrison Chase Brown (15) September, 25 2010. Colorado
> Raymond Chase (19) September 29, 2010. Rhode Island
> Felix Sacco (17) September 29, 2010. Massachusetts
> Caleb Nolt (14) September 30, 2010. Indiana
Remember them. And reach out to — and check in with — every teen you know. They may need you right now, more than you imagine.

..."Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers. According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), about 8 out of every 100,000 teenagers committed suicide in 2000."
..."Several factors increase the risk that a teenager will attempt suicide:
* Depression or feelings of loneliness or helplessness
* Alcohol or drug addiction
* A family history of abuse, suicide, or violence
* Previous suicide attempts; almost half of teens who commit suicide had attempted
suicide previously.
* A recent loss such as a death, break-up, or parents’ divorce Illness or disability
* Stress over school, relationships, performance expectations, etc.
* Fear of ridicule for getting help for problems
* Being bullied or being a bully
* Exposure to other teens committing suicide, such as at school or in the media
* Access to firearms or other lethal objects
* A belief that suicide is noble
90 percent of people who attempt or commit suicide suffer from a mental illness "Bullying and teasing is part being a teenager. I experienced both. Did it make me want to kill myself? -No, it made me want to kill them. But I did neither. Going through being bullied taught me about the nature of people, how to handle myself in those situations, and how to stand up for myself.
Being LGBT is almost common-place these days, as it's more widely accepted by in media, and I don't know of any guys who would hate to have a bi-sexual girlfriend.
My opinion. I think that stress, pressure, and maybe even mental illness played a larger roll. More people these days are suffering from depression than ever before.

Every school in the country should be required to teach tolerance.
However, the vast majority of churches in this country are Baptist and/or evangelical in nature. Every Sunday if I happen by one of those churches, I think to myself, ‘Houses of Hate.’ That is what they are, and those folks are indoctrinated into hate against nonbelievers PLUS the GLBTQI.
We easily talk about Radical Islam. We admit that most Muslims are just plain folks like us. We know that a few Muslims attend Radical Houses of Islamic Hate. We know they hate the nonbelievers such as most of the people of the USA. We know that is wrong.
We know we are just folks like most Muslims. We know the radicals hate us because they see us as different and offensive for various stupid reasons.
My fellow Americans, be you male or female, be you White, Black, Brown, Asian, or whatever, be you Straight, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Intersexed, or Queer, be you of any religious faith or none, WELCOME TO THE CLUB OF THE HATED!!! Or more accurately; Welcome to the GBLTQIN (Nonbelievers in Radical Religion, or an atheist or agnostic)!
We are all equally hated by Radical Islam PLUS Radical Christianity. WE ARE all in the same boat according to them. We are all infidels because we do not believers like them, so they believe we must all be killed or converted.
So now, you know how discrimination feels for homosexuals and the like. Because you are an N (Nonbelievers in Radical Religion, or an atheist or agnostic)! Think of that when you remember 9/11.
I say to all the homophobes, that which you hated you have become. Do you find it reasonable? Do you ask how anyone can hate you for being different, believing in god in a different way? How does it feel?
Like I said, Welcome to the Club of the Hated. I’ll bet you never thought you would be a member. Well you are.
Someone or some group will always hate you because you are not like them. Therefore, the next time you bash a fag, remember you are bashing one of your own. Most Americans were awakened to their membership after 9/11; they just did not know they were in the Club of the Hated. So, welcome whether you want to be a member or not. The rest of us were also drafted. Oh BTW, as a member, you also get killed, in wars, terrorist attacks, or on the streets in many places, just like a fag. There is no difference, between killing a fag or killing and infidel. It is all the result of Hate.
We condemn Mosks that teach Radical Islam. We actively protest and work against them the best we can. The question is, how will we respond to our own Houses of Hate? - 1 year ago

This is so terrible, there should be a mandatory lesson on TOLERANCE every single grade in school! I also wanted to post this on here, just in case everyone hasn't seen it : https://secure3.convio.net/hrc/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&...

It sucks that some people have to flaunt their "normalcy" by picking on people who are different from them.
One of my friends throughout middle school was gay and black, and he got fucked with everyday.
He's suffered from chronic depression for 9 years now. - 1 year ago

This is why, to my peers, I encourage an aggressive approach to anti-gay sentiment. We need to keep our opposition (aka our usual repressors) on the defensive.

You forget that some people are JUST SUICIDAL. It's unfortunate, but it IS going to happen, , , , to straights AND gays. Thinning of the herd is normal. Don't forget about the thousands of STRAIGHT suicides every year? Gays have it better here in the USA than ANYWHERE ON EARTH. So, stop getting your panties in a bunch, relax, stop rockin'-the-boat, and enjoy life.

I'm assuming you didn't know many openly gay kids growing up.
I knew gay kids, guys especially, who were constantly harassed and assaulted by groups of guys and sometimes girls. I knew 2 who were hospitalized. Most of the gay kids I knew lied about being gay until high school, and even then they waited until they were about to graduate to be honest about it.You speak with years of inexperience.

Shut the fuck up and go away. You have no idea what you're talking about and you're bordering on being offensive to me beyond all measure of what I can deal with.
You can't STAND UP AND FIGHT an entire THOUGHT. You can't stand up and fight whole groups of people that stare at you in the hallways. Bullies don't typically come singular or in pairs, even. Bullying comes with a culture, and you can't just start SWINGING when people make fun of you for the millionth time. Besides, what the fuck would that accomplish? Oh, I just punched that girl because her and her friends have called me a faggot since the first day I started school. THIS SOLVES EVERYTHING!
The reason these kids are committing suicide are FAR beyond the help of simply "STANDING UP AND FIGHTING"! You can't punch an entire culture, asshole! Stop trolling on Current and go out into the real world again to get some bearings on how this issue actually affects people before you start casting fucking judgment at every fucking turn, PLEASE.
