"Dude, you have no phone."
I'm not enough of a stupid ass to answer my phone in class.
But if that was my phone eating so much floor, I'd know a certain teacher who's going to find a concrete block planted through her windshield.
So long as we're being juvenile and breaking each others property.

I'm a teacher at university and a few times I've banished disengaged and churlish students from my classes telling them never to return. And I've never had any problem with administration....I just offload them onto more tolerant suckers....whoops..I mean colleagues. But I've never had one taking a call in class. We had a teacher who took calls while she was teaching and she was sacked eventually.

The kids a fool for answering his phone in class but I think spiking it on the tile floor is too far. I've seen students do that before and the teacher just takes away the phone for the whole day. That normally does the trick.

I'm all for the teacher having recourse against that type of behavior in the classroom; teachers have it tough enough without some arrogant, self-absorbed prick answering the phone in the middle of class. However, the destruction of the private property of the self-absorbed prick in question is irresponsible and, in the U.S., begs for a lawsuit. It's easy to say that the teacher should have seized the phone until class was over; yet, we don't know the full situation. This particular student may have been previously warned; he may be one of those stupid bastard kids whose parents have instilled in him the idea that he doesn't have to pay any attention to his teachers and other authority figures. If it were my kid, I'd smash the phone my-damned-self over that shit.

She should pay for it. It was his property. She could have asked him to leave, or kicked him out of the class...something more, professional....
but instead she sunk to a new level. Having a little temper tantrum cause someone interrupted her. Kick the kid out of the class, but don't steal his property and destroy it, what kind of example does that set for the others? That violence is the answer?!?
I am disappointed that she took this route, there could have been a dozen other things she could have done that would have made a better, longer lasting, professional impression on the student. Okay, done ranting now...

As adults we answer our cell phones wherever we are so why should kids be any different? sure I see the opinions on the other side of this debate but kids copy our behavior and often seek to be grown up while still in their teens! I also feel that many schools have become jails, where our kids are beaten often for minor infractions! Capital punishment doesn't work it just makes for a hostile and angry kid and some dropout!

galwayman:
Actually that is a sweeping generalization about adults with cell phones. And this is a far cry from jail, the kid is not getting beaten. I think it's funny you compare smashing a cell phone with capital punishment, where people are put to death. Perhaps you meant corporal punishment? The kid was being rude, and there is no excuse for it. I'm guessing that the teacher made her policy clear when the class first started as to what was acceptable and what was not, and this kid deliberately when against her policy. Does that give her a right to smash the phone? Probably not, but does smashing a phone equate to a cold oppressive school setting? um... no. When was the last time you were in a school if I may ask?

Hmm. Don't think you can blame just adults for this one. Cell phone etiquette developed concurrently with the development of cell phones. Since they were accessible to both adults and children simultaneously both generations are to blame.
If I am talking to someone face to face and my phone rings, I let it ring. Answering a phone in the middle of a conversation with someone else is, IMO, rude.

in asia cell phone etiquette is a very different thing than in america, if you talk on your phone on a bus you could get punched in the face. for him to answer his phone during class was wrong and the teacher was in her (cultural) right to do the actions she did. Some americans need to understand that this is a social norm in other parts of the world.

I have to totally disagree with this. She was confronted with immaturity and responded with even more immaturity by destroying his private property, even if it was disruptive to the class. I could imagine being just as frustrated by this, but I feel like it would have been FAR more effective to immediately eject him out of the class and impose a class rule that would INSTANTLY fail anyone who answered their phone in class (outside of a severe emergency, which would be handled differently of course).
There has to be a different way to handle class disruption out of HULK SMASH PHONE. Doesn't seem like a very intelligent or well-thought-out move especially concerning schools are places of learning. There are worse punishments than destruction of property, and they carry far less legal ramifications.

The idea of a smashed phone should be of no importance. It is just a hunk of replaceable plastic and metals. Think of it this way, if the teacher would have kindly taken the phone how would the student have responded? The situation was certainly approached and left in timely manner with the quick smash of a phone.

I would love to see anyone "kindly" take someone's phone out of their hand. Someone grabbing something that is yours is usually a pretty offensive gesture. Also, it wouldn't have to end with just taking it. "Hi, this is Mrs. , is a jackass that answers his phone in class, and now it's mine. Bye." Then telling him to see her after class, and warn him if she sees him do anything like that ever again, he's flunked. I think that would get the point across pretty well, wouldn't you?

Of course they won't, but that's not the point. I'm trying to say that it's silly to put maturity on an even keel between a teacher and a student; the teacher should be the one to be looked up to for mature decision-making, not the student. Students are expected to be jackasses and fuck up from time to time (in general, his offense is obviously pretty grievous). I understand teachers are put through a hell of a lot of unnecessary stress due to shitty and disrespectful students, but saying he was completely in the wrong doesn't excuse her immature and destructive outburst.
