Food Stamps and Unemployment "Good for the Economy" Sez Madame Pelosi

"It is the biggest bang for the buck when you do food stamps and unemployment insurance. The biggest bang for the buck," she said.
Gingrich on Tuesday wrote a letter critical of the Democrats' stewardship of the economy and urged all Republican candidates to shape the political debate as one "between the Democratic Party of food stamps and the Republican Party of paychecks."http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/06/pelosi-fires-back-at-gingrich-ov...

    • The poster bitch of incompetence speaks ! Still, there is the
      possibility that Pelosi got her eonomics degree as the prize
      in a cracker jacks box. Since there's no such thing as a Federal
      living wage law...,Since many if not most of working Americans
      can't live on 1/2 rations..., I somehow get the feeling they can't
      even take a bus to Walmart to buy 3rd world goods with money
      they don't have, which would only return to the 3rd world anyway
      because you can bet their Gummint greenbacks wouldn't benefit
      any living soul existing in the USA. And if they own a car, they're
      probably trying to sell it, since if they've got kids, and a house to
      pay a mortgage on, they probably can't afford any more money
      pits now that they're in arrears on their credit cards, and their
      credit is in the toilet. But you keep dreaming how " good " it is for
      OUR economy you incompetent idiot shit. And to think this retard
      is Speaker of the House of Representatives. They pay her too much.

      Pelosi, Reid, and Pinocio'bama have no concept of the commonwealth
      of We the People, the wealth of communities, and home rule at local level.
      They're too busy obliging their multi lateral Corporate puppetmasters
      and exporting Americans' jobs to China to make their uberrich dominant
      stockholders happy. Because they don't believe in American principles
      like majority rule, they attempt to snow us with their consolation prize
      philosophy. Well at least we've got unemployment insurance/food stamps.
      It's obvious none of those jackasses have any vision to progress the USA.

      FDR instituted the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Work Projects
      Administration and at least one other admin. to bring the USA out of
      the Great Depression. It took 10 years to do it, but the USA was by
      comparison infinitely better off in 1929 than it is today. The USA
      was infinitely better off between 1890 and 1920 than it is today. Back
      then, before the proliferation of internal combustion engines, there
      was a mass transit system of electric trams stretching from Boston
      Mass all the way to Madison, Wisconsin. Citizens could relocate to
      obtain jobs in other Northeastern States, cheaply by means of paper
      transfers. Because you could go virtualy anywhere then on electric
      power as the Swiss can. In 2008 the voters listened to Nobama's
      grifter false promises and had faith there would be green jobs
      available for them to retrain to be hired to do. We need to solicit all
      the honest people in Government who have decent voting records
      to start a 3rd, and 4th party, so that we can boot out these puppets.
      THEN we will retake our country back from Corporatist warmongers.

    • The only alternative to foodstamps would be to have food banks on every corner. In every small town. Some people NEED foodstamps. You can't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
      There does need to be reform including cheapening or emerging technology, but until someone ACTUALLY STATES a better idea, you can go to hell, with your Big Mac.

However, those programs really do keep money moving, which is what this economy needs right now. Republicans just want to distract everyone by making them mad at poor people and the unemployed, which is really f-ed up.

      You should have said "republican politicians"
      btw I'm not a republican, used to be democrat until the Messiah showed me the light, now my political affiliation is undecided.
      Anywayz... I do agree with you, kind of, I mean 'keeping money moving' what does that mean anyway? Sounds stupid.

      But yeah imagine what the economy or just america in general would be like if people had to steal their food to feed their kids.

    • I imagine that States other than Texas have similar statistics,
      Welfare Fraud Is a Big Problem:

      Medicaid fraud cases prosecuted in Texas include:
      • a psychotherapist who billed for more than 24 hours worth of sessions in a single day;
      • a radiologist who billed for multiple x-rays but performed single x-rays;
      • a radiologist who added lab and x-ray services to the original request of the referring physician;
      • a dentist who submitted falsified claims for services that had already been paid to, and delivered by, another provider;
      • an adult day care center that billed for services rendered to patients who were not present;
      • a hearing aid vendor who billed for new hearing aids after delivering used hearing aids;
      • a pharmacist who billed for drugs never dispensed, submitted claims for brand names when generic drugs were dispensed, and indicated a larger quantity of drugs than was actually provided;
      • a physician who billed for office visits for an entire family when the doctor actually saw a single member of the family; and,
      • an agency that billed for home health services for patients who were in the hospital.[2]
      The $9.6 billion in state and federal funds Texas spent on Medicaid in fiscal 1996--almost a quarter of the entire state budget--represents a 128 percent increase over the $4.2 billion spent only five years ago. Although caseload growth and inflation in medical services contributed to the growth in program spending, caseloads grew by only 44 percent over the same period.[3] Texas processed more than 26.8 million Medicaid acute care claims in 1995, an average of 550,000 claims a week from more than 121,000 Medicaid providers.[4]
      While no one knows the exact amount of losses due to health care fraud, national health care industry experts estimate these losses at 5 percent per year. The U.S. General Accounting Office estimates that losses may be as high as 10 percent.[5] With $6 billion in state and federal funds spent on acute care medical services and another $1.3 billion spent on nursing home services, Texas' potential losses due to Medicaid fraud may be between $365 million and $730 million annually.[6]
      Welfare fraud
      Texas also faces losses due to client error or fraud in its Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and food stamp programs. In fiscal 1995, Texas spent $523 million on AFDC and received nearly $2.3 billion in federal food stamp benefits.[7] As much as $222.4 million was spent in error in 1995; more than 36 percent of this erroneous spending was attributable to recipient fraud.[8]
      Texas welfare recipients have been caught:
      • falsifying employment information;
      • receiving duplicate benefits under different names and addresses;
      • falsifying the number of dependent children in the household or other information about family composition;
      • selling their food stamp benefits for cash;
      • falsifying information on income or bank account assets; and,
      • receiving welfare and other benefits under false names.

      Fraud. Yes!

      Many of our now more compassionate States raid (or, rather, embezzle) $$ via "IV-mailines" tapped into their Candy Mountain of (y)our Social Security.

      Some of the elite ventriloquist may counter that "it is complicated."

      Yes, it certainly is complicated to find rational logic from irrational rationalizations in fated (yet, presently "effective") efforts for racketeering and embezzlement(s) of public funds.

      And, NO, it is not complicated at all; rather, it is (at least seemingly) "the same as it ever was." (fn1)

      "IV-mainlilners" do indeed need be brought to further light.

      Nancy Pelosi is a sad excuse for a Senator. She spends millions of our tax dollars having the Air Force fly her to California every weekend and back to Washington in a huge Boeing Jet. The woman is deceptive and greedy. She desperately needs to go.
      Her commenting on food stamps is rediculas and shows just how shallow this woman is.
      If people need help feeding their children or themselves I am all for it. What I am against is the massive fraud that exists caused by people who play the system. Nancy is a major player in her own right.

      If you think people should get government help but there should't be fraud, then guess what. MOST people agree with you. I don't understand why you'd pick on Pelosi for that. That thing about Air Force is fair, but I've never heard of that.

      6 SNAP (Food Stamp) Myths

      Myth #1: People who get SNAP don’t work.

      FACT: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the program, 29% of households enrolled in SNAP do work. Of all SNAP households in the United States, 51% include children, 19% include seniors and 23% include someone disabled. All together, 83% of SNAP households contain a child, a senior or a disabled person.

      Myth #2: SNAP is a drain on taxpayers.

      FACT: Every $5 in SNAP benefits generates $9 in economic activity, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. SNAP not only helps low-income people buy groceries, it frees up cash for other expenses, such as medical care, clothing, home repairs and childcare. That benefits local businesses and their employees, which boosts the economy as a whole.

      Myth #3: SNAP is rife with fraud and abuse.

      FACT: Pennsylvania's food stamp fraud rate is 0.1% of all cases, one of the lowest rates among states with more than a million participants. The introduction of EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards has dramatically reduced consumer fraud. According to the USDA, the small amount of fraud that continues is usually on the part of retailers, not consumers.

      Myth #4: SNAP benefits go to illegal immigrants.

      FACT: Illegal immigrants have never been eligible for SNAP. Legal immigrants can only get food stamps if they've lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with exceptions for refugees, asylees and children). In fact, immigrants are far less likely to apply for food stamps because they worry about jeopardizing their immigration status and because the application process is especially daunting for non-English speakers.

      Important: SNAP is a nutrition program run by the USDA and is not considered a welfare program. Receiving SNAP benefits will not affect a legal immigrant’s immigration status or any effort to gain U.S. citizenship.

      Myth #5: Hunger isn't a problem in my community.

      FACT: More than half a million people in the five-county region get SNAP. As of December 2009, Philadelphia County had 400,113 SNAP participants, a 14% increase over the past year.

      Other counties saw sharper increases in SNAP use:

      * Montgomery County: 34,515 SNAP participants (up 33% from the year prior)
      * Bucks County: 29,003 participants (up 32%);
      * Delaware County: 55,565 participants (up 23%);
      * Chester County: 16,848 participants (up 28%)

      Myth #6: SNAP leads to unhealthy eating habits and obesity.

      FACT: National studies show no significant link, positive or negative, between food stamps and healthy eating. Nor do they demonstrate a relationship between food stamps and weight gain.

    • If we crack down on foodstamps, then maybe we should force companies holding onto billions in cash to use the money to hire people. Instead they seem to be hording it until another Republican gets into office and gives them more loopholes and tax breaks.

      For the record, whether they are cheating or not I don't think any of us with jobs with trade places with anyone that is on any of these programs. If you find someone who is on any of these programs then please go ahead and give them your paycheck. In exchange ask them for their food stamps/unemployment check. Oh and btw give them your medical coverage as well if you have it. You can have their discounted version with all the perks. And whatever you do don't forget to put away the taxes for the unemployment free handout. That catches a lot of people by surprise.

I don't sell them to anyone and spend more time looking for a job now than the eight hours a day I used to put in when working. So if you don't like it kiss my white rear end.

      Instead of spending all your vitrol pissing on people who don't have anything and questioning their ethics why don't you show some anger at the upper 5% who have destroyed the middle class and shipped all the good jobs overseas.

      Welfare fraud describes the intentional misuse of various state funded welfare programs. It may consist of withholding certain information or providing inaccurate or false information to receive benefits. The most common types of welfare fraud include failing to report additional income, failure to disclose information regarding household family members, or supplying false information about an inability to work. There have also been instances were people feigned illness or injury to manipulate the welfare system. In general practice, welfare fraud often consists of someone acquiring benefits that are undeserved to them. An error may occur where a recipient collects benefits in their name in a situation where they don't qualify, or they may collect benefits on behalf of someone who will never receive the funds.

      Welfare fraud has proven to be rather expensive, costing the system millions in misused benefits every year. In each U.S. state, the penalty for extensive fraud warrants a felony convention, onethat could land a perpetrator in prison for many years. Due to the growing rate of this crime, several states now offer large rewards for the reporting of welfare fraud that leads to a conviction.

They don't even look for work some are working under the table. The system is broken in a big way. I say if you get either food stamps or Unemployment then you have to regester with the local workforce commission. Either that or lose your benefits.

    • She is such a wacko. I will be SO happy to see her go.
      When given her "pink-slip" , it should be certified mail, and say "YOU HAVE TO SIGN FOR IT, TO SEE WHAT'S IN IT" ! ! !

      I completely agree. The food pantry can only do so much and business is booming these days. Hungery children know no political party, just that they are hungry.

    • Well they're certainly good for the people on them. And because our economy is unfortunately based on perpetually buying crap in the short run it is probably good. In the long run though some one will pay.

    • She didn't say unemployment and food stamps were a good thing, she said unemployment INSURANCE and food stamps are "the biggest bang for the buck," which is fucking TRUE.

      There is no better way to stimulate a broken economy than to provide the unemployed with cheap food and disposable income.

      The only thing demonstrably superior to that is to spend a shitload more money and put them to work building infrastructure like roads and bridges, which is what got a whole mess of people through the depression alive.

      If you're going to be posting "gotcha" stories, you should at least fucking READ what the gotcha is supposed to be.

      See, this is why there is no conservative daily show. Because they suck at this.

      she made the implication. we dont need a stinking daily show. we rule on talk radio and have the bigger audience. why do you think liberal talk always fails? no one wants to listen

      Last time I checked, people having jobs and earning an honest paycheck provided more "bang for the buck" than sitting back and not collecting a paycheck. Apparently, I have been working way too hard to pay my bills and provide for my family and not helping the economy in Mrs. Pelosi's view.

      You are such a fucking selfish idiot it's incredible.

      The recession, remember that? Remember how 30 million fucking people are out of work and there's no jobs for them? Did you forget about that part? THAT'S THE POINT OF UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE AND FOOD STAMPS.

      Nothing was implied, nothing about your livelihood was insulted and no one is leeching off of you.

      This is about you being a clueless idiot who can't see past the end of his block.
