Southern Baptist leader on yoga: Not Christianity

--LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Southern Baptist leader who is calling for Christians to avoid yoga and its spiritual attachments is getting plenty of pushback from enthusiasts who defend the ancient practice.
Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler says the stretching and meditative discipline derived from Eastern religions is not a Christian pathway to God.
Mohler said he objects to "the idea that the body is a vehicle for reaching consciousness with the divine."
"That's just not Christianity," Mohler told The Associated Press.
Mohler said feedback has come through e-mail and comments on blogs and other websites since he wrote an essay to address questions about yoga he has heard for years.
"I'm really surprised by the depth of the commitment to yoga found on the part of many who identify as Christians," Mohler said.
Yoga fans say their numbers have been growing in the U.S. A 2008 study by the Yoga Journal put the number at 15.8 million, or nearly 7 percent of adults. About 6.7 percent of American adults are Southern Baptists, according to a 2007 survey by the Pew Research Center Forum on Religion & Public Life.
Mohler argued in his online essay last month that Christians who practice yoga "must either deny the reality of what yoga represents or fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga."
He said his view is "not an eccentric Christian position."

    • He's right. Yoga is not a Christian practice, and it is in fact directly linked to the idea of "human divine" and/or "many gods" (although, Christianity is a polytheistic religion, however, the difference is that Yoga, if embracing the idea of 'many gods", does not call all other gods but the most evil one "evil").

I am quite certian that Christians who practice Yoga do indeed see the contradictions between Christianity and Yoga. It is also rather obvious, due to that comment, that this preacher fails to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments, other Christian commitments, Christian churches, and Christianity.

    • Christians have been on this for years. My Christian high school bible teacher used to say similar things during class. Oddly enough, there's also a segment of Evangelicals who endorse "Christian Yoga"...what a strange world globalization has created...

    • My dad went to seminary with this nut job preacher. Dad doesn't have too many nice things to say about him. This guy makes crazy claims all the time just to get attention. He's been in the media before for this kind of nonsense.

What nonsense? He's doing a good job here... making sure the world know what Christianity really teaches, so that less people will be dumb enough to follow it unless they really are evil, tyrannic, destructive people and are doing it on purpose.

Please, go dunk yourself in a river, a cold river, dive in head first, you need to baptize yourself for reals, you need to wake the fuck up and see the light because frankly, your brothers and sisters wont hesitate to smack the light into you. Amen!

That's one of the benefits of Yoga is that it so "flexible" with many different uses on many different levels depending on which type is practiced.

Unlike the rigid dogma that tries to force one opinion onto everything whether it applies or not.

I think you meant fish... which isn't red meat. Fish is healthier than red meat. Omega 3 fatty acids! Check out BBC news article on Americans look to Jesus for diet. Jesus was a Jew who by today's standards still don't eat Pork, Beef. And it is safe to say Quakers and other sects of Christianity eat much better than most Americans without religion or some sense of a "health-conscious" attitude towards themselves and life in general. Might want to wiki Christianity and all the different sects and/or look up Food restrictions for different religions, etc... misinformation is the death to society. Self educate before +1.

    • "or fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga"

Following ANY religion, especially Christianity, you have to ignore all the "contradictions". That's just an ESSENTIAL prerequisite.

He didn't spend that 40 days in the desert contemplating just so some extremists could hijack his message for their own agenda.

That's the difference between the spirituality that Jesus taught and the religious dogma that some use to subjugate others.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wX_W1BB_0M

The major benefit in yoga is that it doesn't depend on others since you can find out for yourself by practicing if what they say about it is true.

it's exercise, definitely. especially for those who can't confrom or flow with the true spiritual philosophies and meanings of yoga as "Christians". and there's nothing wrong with that!

    • It's fucking stretching, what could possibly be unChristian about it?

If people can find spirituality in being "slain" by the holy spirit when some con-man, uh I mean preacher, speaks in tongues and slaps them with his coat, who's to say they won't find it during a sun salutation.

      Religious leaders are so useless.

Yoga, on the other hand, is fucking great for you. Do that shit whenever you have some extra time.

    • If more people would abandon Christianity in favor of Yoga, the world would be a better place.

I've never heard of a Guru commanding a squad of suicide bombers, burning down a gay bar, or shooting an abortion doctor.

    • Of course he would say that as yoga frees your mind whereas his brand of Christianity seeks to enslave the mind. My brand of Christianity seeks to explore the spirit in the true sense Jesus taught us to do. Not based on a book of fables.

    • What they don't like about yoga is that it is anti-dogma and anti-authoritarian because instead of having others tell you what to believe yoga gives you direct experience from your own practice.

That kind of practice to refine your self-awareness is a threat to the power of controling the message they have always sought. Much like the threat of scientific investigation.

If people can find their own answers through practice and gathering direct experience then they don't need authorities to do it for them and those autorities lose all their influence.

Just like scientists gather their own evidence to prove the answers they seek without relying on myths and legends from the past.

    • This would be some what legitimate if it wasn't for the fact the modern yoga has hardly any of the deep seeded religious practices or understandings that it contained at it's origin. I think though to say that it's contradicting christianity is like saying if you wear a scarf, you are muslim, or if you sit in silence for a while, you are buddhist. Doing these things does not necessarily associate a person to a religions, nor make it a contradiction of another religion.
On another point too, i think christianity can learn something from Hinduism... they had 3 yogas (emotional, logical, and physical) which were paths to enlightenment based on the type of person... Christianity for the most part only fulfills those who tend to be more emotional (hence the dramatic tales which are contained in Christian doctrine). Maybe if they had a physical practice their followers would not have to resort to another 'religious' practice.

    • Happy notice, christian talk:
Yoga is about self awareness and honesty about where you are and your confines at the that moment in time. Its relaxing and helps me quite my mind so I can listen better to situations. These are things that help me as I evangelize and spread the Gospel of Jesus through out my community as I submit my self to The Spirit of God and scripture. I'm a literal fundamentalist: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. I spread the message of redemption that frees people from the guilty bonds of eternal death.

This man ignorantly is reacting to the interpretation of someone about a physical and mental practice that has been and changed from culture to culture for thousands of year. This reminds me of the reaction that many Europeans had to produce from the Columbian Exchange because non of it was found in the bible.

    • Okay, then make your own spiritual exercise for Christians, Mr. Mohler.

I wouldn't try fundamentalist Christian yoga, though. It probably involves very stiff, rigid movements and intensive speaking in tounges. An altogether unpleasant experience, I shouldn't wonder.

I don't know much at all about yoga, my knowledge really lies more in dance. Some of my mates are real yoga buffs and they try to show me poses now and then. All I know is that your ability to do the most challenging of the poses depends almost completely on your mastery of control of the trunk, control of breathing, thoughts/nerves, etc. Really interesting stuff.

Hey, i'm actually not that involved in the modern day yoga (ps i just posted some info above) But yeah yoga originated as a Hindu practice. And there were originally 3 yogas (which i forget the names of) but each was a path to enlightenment: Logical, Emotional, and Physical Yogas. The modern yoga mostly stems from the physical yoga, and the practice (which I only just experienced for the first time a few weeks ago) consists mostly of various positions of which are supposed to open up different path ways of the body and to get you to really focus on every part of your body while exercising your muscles. It is mostly just a way to bring your awareness and consciousness to the present moment and present state of your physical body. It was bloody tiring also ha. But I don't see any reason it should contradict other religious practices unless you really explore the more spiritual side of Yoga... and even then if your faith is shaken by Yoga... you have some deeper questions you should be asking about yourself and your religious beliefs.

    • Well, let's see what the "Good" book says Christians should do:

Mass murder, regular murder, slavery (including your daughters), rape, pillage, plunder, child abuse, incest, and oppress all women, to name a few.

Sorry, Yoga is not on the list, God demands your death . . .

The new testament is actually pretty sweet... I just recently started studying Jesus' life and such (although I have no religious attachement to him or the religion) and his teachings should really be respected no matter what religious or ideological background you come from. Just as I respect the buddha, einstein, and any well educated moral individual of our past, Jesus deserves a certain amount of respect, disregarding modern Christian practices which may many times may seem in opposition to his original teachings.

Think about the core message of Jesus. We have a being who, according to the Standard Model of God, embodies love, has and will love you forever, will even answer your prayers. Yet, if you do not get down on your knees and worship him, you will be physically tortured for all eternity. What sort of love is that?

See John 6:53-54 and Mark 16:16.

There no no down side to yoga increased flexibility, increased endurance and strength deep breathing more oxygen to the body including the brain, oh there is the problem ... keep 'em sleep. got cha.

The Christian god is VERY insecure- it's almost a key article of faith- God is a Jealous God.

The #1 sin is worshiping any other gods before him.
It was the reason for the flood, the REAL reason for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the reason for every single other time in the Bible where God has either killed people, or ordered his followers to kill people.

That's why it is so ridiculous when Christians claim this nation was founded on Christian principles, when the core defining characteristic of this country- Freedom of Religion- is 100% the opposite of the core defining characteristic of Christianity- Faith in God through Christ.

Practicing Yoga is basically practicing a form of Hinduism.
The Christian God is a jealous God, so you're not supposed to hang out with other Gods.

Maybe this Baptist will develop his own form of Christian Yoga: Yojesus, lol.

I think you doubt their capacity to hate harmless things , There are LOTS of those in the world . I think they are angry because they have to live in fear of hellfire and cannot admit it . This real makes them extra resentful of the people having fun . Enjoyment makes them jealous , since , they have this burden in life . It is common in extremist religions to attack anything beautiful , pleasurable or happy . It just gets more extreme with time . Each generation must have it's target . Gays , women , hand holders , any form if self expression is a target .
