90-Year-Old C-SPAN Caller Wants ‘Coloreds’ To Thank White People For ‘Free Everything’

The caller, a well-meaning enough lady, we guess, just wanted to point out all the wonderful things white people have done for “coloreds” since slavery, including “free everything.” It appears that her only shot at letting black people know all the wonderful things white people have done for them since slavery was calling into C-SPAN, where, thank heavens, a “colored man” was anchoring the program. How else would she be expected to find one? Anyway, this is what she said:
“I am 90 years old and I just wanted to ask the colored man, why don’t colored people, instead of saying what we did to them, why dont they say what we did for them? They talk about the slavery, but since then they have given them welfare, free medicine, free everything.”
The anchor very deftly deflected the criticism while managing to keep a straight face (almost): “Ma’am, I think this is more of a conversation about the relationship between the administration and people on Wall Street, and not one that is necessarily based on race.” She responds, “Okay. I’m not a racist. That was my comment, thank you.”
Given the demographic these daytime C-SPAN talk shows seem to attract, and the fact that is feels like every four months one of these confused non-racists manages to get through to phone lines (remember “Black-SPAN“?), one has to wonder how many years of “dealing with old racist callers” workshops the anchors have to go through before being put on air

Come on, a senile, old fart who reflects an era of ignorance. She won't be around much longer, and when she passes there will be one less of them. There is no difference between blacks and whites except those created by politicians and ignorant people of both races.

And actually, I've met a lot of great Boomers lately... So I guess I take it back, but you know what I meant. I want the bigots to die off.
ALSO: remember that I went to Pepperdine, where 1 in 2 students are lameo bible-thumping judgmental evangelical clones of their parents. So, I suppose it doesn't have much to do with generations specifically, but with Religious Assholes.

As for the climate on campus & in class, let's just say it was usually lonely. Did I have a college experience? Nope. I lived at a religious resort for 4 years is all. But at least it brought me to LA & I still wouldn't change any of it.

More of the Tea Party base makes itself known. After Obama's election they had some interviews with conservatives living in the mountain west (which is pretty much everyone who lives there) talking about how they had never seen a black man in person in their entire life. The only thing they knew about them was what they saw on tv. Now thats a scary thought. People who think they know how the country should be run who have never seen anything outside their small, rural mountain town except what is on television.

This is just freaking ignorant. It's highly unlikely that the old bat even knows what the Tea Party is. The blacks in the Tea Party I'm sure don't consider themselves racists, and the vast majority of the whites involved in the movement are not racists. Just because millions of people do not agree with a Leftist president, empowered by a Leftist congress does not mean they are racists. Grow up.

However, this is just the kind of person who would be swayed by Tea Party candidates who use all the right code words to get across the point that they want one of which is that minorities are bad and spending all of our hard earned tax money on malt liquor and cigarettes. Millions of people think that the lefties are giving away all their hard earned tax money to other people. They are ok with all the money that is spent on them like medicaid and free scooters for retired white middle class Republicans.

That all goes without saying, but Caucasians are from Europe, and [not North America], so again I say to him...".Imagine if you would have stayed in the Caucus mountains in Europe. You're not indigenous to this country".-2 XasthurNortt commented,.. "Imagine if they would've stayed in Africa. ungrateful" was made suggesting that Black people in America should somehow be grateful that we were taken out of Africa, as if somehow Caucasians saved us from ourselves or did us some kind of huge favor.
My response to that simply is that, they too are not from this country, and even better still one could argue too that they should be grateful that they brought some of us to this country. African Americans help build this country and have made huge (most unknown) contributions to this country.
Free labor for the first 300 years ? You can beat that. Everybody alive should share some kind of gratitude for what their neighbors have done for them. Everybody means everybody. We all are climbing Jacob's Ladder.

yeah that whole "be gratefull" bullshit is retarded.
slavery has a long and anchient history, black people were not the only group to be subjected as slaves, they're just the latest to be such in our learned history. vikings, muslims, the chinese, the romans... all had slaves, even the african tribes that the europeans raided or traided where often slavers themselves. the fact that the native african tribes were traiding slaves (of equivalent skin pigment) to me means that it's NOT about race but Class.
slaves are a class, not a race. and yes this class has done much if not most of the construction of modern civilization.

this reminds me of how my great grand parents still say things like "that man, was your grandfathers nigro buddy from the army." they're not racist, but according to our current trends, statements like that do seem racist, though they are so only superficially.
also, if we're really supposed to be past the race issue, why is there even such a thing as "Black entertainment television or BET"? I'm fairly sure the FCC would not allow something like a "White entertainment television." and NOT because of the acronym WET...

also I don't own a TV or really ever see it, but I have seen enough to know that this is a retarded NON-issue. I understand there may be a language barrier or similar, thus we have spanish channels and the like. but the fact that we do have so many spanish channels means to me that it's NOT about race (because most spanish speaking people in america are usually latino), because it if were about race then latino's would be considered superior to blacks because of media representation. do you think that's true? I don't think that's true. though, I am aware of a sort of 'hirearchy of racism'...

just a thought ? a shallow thought at that I might add.
If mainstream media was all inclusive, and unbiased in their duties of news coverage, there would be no need the Asians, Hispanics, Arabs too have their own magazines, newspapers and Television networks in this country ? Unless you're reporting crime, mainstream media doesn't really cover Black news.
White entertainment television does exist. It exist in the form of Fox News, The Bill O'Reily Show,The New York Daily Post, The Drudgery Report, The Rush Limbaugh Show, The Wall Street Journal and many other news outlets in America. Again, unless Black crime is being reported, these outlets are completely void of even mentioning the existence of Blacks in this country.
There's a ghetto in nearly every city in this country. America is far from being past the race issue, and if your great grandparents are still pointing out the race of African Americans, referring to us a "nigro", they may be racist.
Do they point out the race of their White friends too ?

pointing out a hierachy of racism is not a "shallow thought" as you put it my friend... it's something that I doubt many ever consider. personally I'm a mut, and have grown up hearing stories from my grandparents (on all sides) related to this, most importantly I think are the stories from my kiowa grandmother, who informed me that "black's aren't treated as bad as mexicans, who aren't treated as bad as indians..."
I'm not saying media is "all inclusive", I never said that. but I am trying to say that having a majority of white people on TV doesn't in itself make media racist, and thinking it does IS racist in itself.
you can pick and choose stations and programs to make the point, and that just shows your own bias... as I said before how can you explain the spanish channels? IF the media really IS racist.
yes, there is a "ghetto" in most cities, but agin I remind black people are NOT the only ones to live in poverty or ghetto. the ghetto in my city is full of white tweakers and not any black people. so don't think that only black live in ghetto's, that's not true.

also my point about the BET and WET was to show that we're NOT quite past the racism thing just yet... I agree that white people tend to be more prevalent on TV than black people, but I just don't think it's BECAUSE of whites vs. blacks or anything like that...
as an example I live in Idaho, here we have a very small population of black people (almost all are african refugees) anyway, we have WAY more latinos than blacks, so from the perspective of a broadcaster and advertisements, why bother with programming or ads catered to such a small minority? this is also why, and I don't know about other cities, we have so many spanish channels (in Idaho). this is different in other places of course, but I think the point remains valid. That is, why cater to a minority? perhaps in alabama or someplace where the demographics are different and more diverse than in Idaho, it would make sense to broadcast media catered to the demographics of that population. all I mean is that FUBU comercials would be pointless in idaho (I don't even know if that company even has commercials) and that it's not racist to NOT have them.
I'm not justifying any racism, i'm saying that TV programming is usually made for targeted audiences, and that in many cases perhaps more often than not, the targeted audience just happens to be a majority (here) of the local population.
maybe you folks know better than I do. In places where black people are the majority, are the TV programming and ads catered to them or to whites?

I think many people will agree that American cultural norms have transformed pretty significantly in the past ninety years. It shouldn't come as any surprise that some of our eldest citizens have not been able to keep up with cultural changes that, from their perspective, would have been considered social heresy in their day. It's tiresome to hear such enduringly ignorant comments from members of the "greatest generation," but I choose to interpret such a racial faux pas as representative of intransigent thickheadedness rather than a malicious heart.
