New York gubernatorial candidate criticizes gays

Paladino: Homosexuality not valid
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
* Republican Carl Paladino says homosexuality isn't "equally valid" with heterosexuality
* "There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual," his prepared remarks say
* A spokesman for Paladino's opponent says comments reveal "stunning homophobia"
* Remarks come as New York police respond to anti-gay hate crimes against 4 men
.
New York (CNN) -- New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino criticized gays Sunday, saying he didn't want children "to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option," compared to heterosexuality.
"It isn't," Paladino said at a stop in Brooklyn, New York.
A prepared version of his remarks obtained by CNN from New York affiliate NY1 said that "There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual," though Paladino did not wind up delivering that line.
"That's not how (God) created us," the prepared remarks continued, though Paladino did not say those words.
Paladino distributed copies of his prepared remarks to reporters at the event, an address to a group of Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood.
The candidate's remarks came a day after New York police announced the arrest of an eighth suspect in a series of brutal, anti-gay hate crimes against four men.
The incident last weekend involved three victims being held against their will by as many as nine assailants who beat them in a vacant apartment and sodomized two of them, police said. A fourth victim was beaten and robbed in connection with the attacks.
"Don't misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way," Paladino said Sunday. "That would be a dastardly lie -- my approach is live and let live."
"I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family," he said.
Paladino also slammed his Democratic opponent, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, for marching in New York's gay pride parade in June.
"That's not the example that we should be showing the children and certainly not in our schools," he said.
Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto responded to Paladino's comments Sunday.
"Mr. Paladino's statement displays a stunning homophobia and a glaring disregard for basic equality," Vlasto said in a statement. "These comments along with other views he has espoused make it clear that he is way out of the mainstream and is unfit to represent New York."
Paladino's remarks also drew fire from gay rights groups.
"Carl Paladino's comments would matter if they were coming from a serious political figure, however they are not," said Christopher Barron, chairman of the gay conservative group GOProud, in an email to CNN. "They are instead coming from the imploding campaign of a man with the personal baggage of John Edwards and all the electability of Alan Keyes."
But Paladino's campaign manager, Michael Caputo, stood by the gubernatorial candidate's comments on homosexuality.
"Carl Paladino's position on this is exactly equivalent to the Catholic Church," Caputo told CNN. "And if Andrew Cuomo has a problem with the Catholic Church's position on abortion and homosexuality, he needs to take it up with his parish priest."
CNN's Mark Preston contributed to this report.

I would speak out against things like the holocaust, slavery, pornography, murder/abortion, and sodomy. Such things are turning the world into a cess-pool. Why not clean it out once in awhile? Clearly, engaging in sodomy does not make someone a minority. Thus I do not buy into Paladino or anyone else being coined a racist or a bigot for speaking out against the vile act. To single a person out would be very wrong, but to speak out against the unspeakable act is long overdue.

Welp then he's a shoe in for this election. The rules for any election go: if you're a Democrat you're held to higher standards of conduct than any human being exhibits if you're a Republican you're expected to say all sorts of fucked up bigoted shit.
In fact if he doesn't win it will be because he wasn't photoed in a Nazi costume while wearing a KKK hood when appearing in front of the NAACP or something. That really would have 'helped' him, again, because he's a Republican.
And you might say but "Emperor, why would a crazy Republican be elected in a liberal state like New York?" I don't know! I just know the rules of elections and they're universal.

Well Matt, I think people have a problem with your commentary because it is reminiscent of prejudiced rhetoric. While you may not speak against anyone indirectly, the bias you have towards them is particular and obvious based upon the negative context you apply to both acts, which are neither inherently good or bad, except when viewed from a certain perspective.
Furthermore, comparing these acts to Pedophillia is erroneous because we can all agree that in whatever context it is wrong. The same cannot be said for sodomy or abortion.
You know how the cliche' goes. If it walks like a duck and sounds like duck, etc.

... Am I the only one who thinks that the majority of our kids in K-12 really aren't going to give a rats gilded ass about what political figures march in what parade? Honestly, I think that they're going to be more interested in when the next season of South Park comes out.
""I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family," he said."
What about what our children want for themselves? At some point they are going to have to make their own decisions, and I would rather have them make those decisions being comfortable with who they are be they heterosexual or homosexual.

Because instead we should teach our children to hate, we should teach them that people who are different are less that the rest of us and therfore should be treated as such. The mainstream bigotry that has been displayed in NY these past few months is disappointing for a city that prides itself on it's diversity. I would have to agree with the campaign manager about one thing, the position the Catholic church takes on Homosexuality needs to be confronted, and exposed for what it is, a green light to abuse gay men and women. Isn't it interesting when expressing carefully worded disdain for gay people they virtually always fall back on religious views to offer validity to their words. Disgusting, for one powerful reason, when one group of people feel that they have the power to deny rights to another... then we are all in trouble.

While I condemn what Paladino said about gays, he has the right to express his thoughts no matter how hateful they may sound. I personally don't care about Paladino's views of homosexuality as long as he doesn't use government to impose his views on others. We need to stop these kneejerk reactions to statements such as the one Paladino made and realize that they have the right to say them, they just don't have the right to use the government to enforce their morality on others, plain and simple.

Libertarians want to leave gays alone, get the government out of marriage altogether. This would also allow gays to adopt which most democrats won't even stand up for for the LGBT community today, at least not the democrats in North Carolina. What's the matter with the Dem/lib side of things in this election cycle? Most of what I read, a lot of it here, that is negative about Republicans/libertarian, is centered around either allegations of racism or anti gay. Not very much about platforms but about personal views. I think that is pretty pitiful but it is what I have come to expect over the years.
I did not see any "hatred" of gays in the post in the beginning of this thread. Hatred is a personal emotion. I think Obama is a danger to this country but I don't hate him. For the left to assign "hatred" to anyone who is not on board or has a different opinion other than them is a good tactic but dishonest. Again, it is what I have come to expect over the years. - 1 year ago
