SUICIDE: Oklahoma's Zach Harrington, 19, Kills Himself After Hateful Town Meeting

Image
toyotabedzrock
Zach Harrington, a 19-year-old in Norman, Oklahoma, attended a City Council meeting Sept. 28 where council members were asked to simply recognize October at LGBT History Month in the city. In a 7-1 vote, the council approved the resolution — but not before three hours of incensed debate back and forth between members of the public during an open comment period. It was this "toxic" exchange among neighbors, railing against the recognition of queers' contributions to society, that led Zach to take his own life a week later, his family says.

> Nikki Harrington, who is eight years older than her brother and also attended
> Norman North, said she recalls the way members of the GLBT community were
> treated during her time there. “There was one gay guy in my high school at the time,
> and he was made fun of all the time,” she said. “It was a pretty much non-stop thing
> at school.” Harrington received a $1,000 scholarship from the Norman chapter of
> Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays when he graduated high school
> and briefly studied music at the University of Central Oklahoma. He had been living
> in Arkansas for about a month prior to his death.

So just what happened during that awful town hall meeting that would lead Zach to take his own life in his family's home? It was a war of words.

> Support for and opposition to the proclamation were fairly even and the public
> comment portion of the agenda item lasted for three hours — the entire time allotted.
> The entire process was an exercise in representative government, with both sides —
> and those in between — given their chance to speak their minds.

> One man said he moved to Norman because he thought it was the kind of place that
> would never accept the GLBT community with open arms. A woman, who described
> herself as “bi-racial,” said she was tired of the GLBT plight being compared to Civil
> Rights [Ed: See above video]. Some of those who opposed the proclamation claimed
> that members of the GLBT community would use it to infiltrate the public school
> system, essentially allowing the “gay lifestyle” to become a part of the curriculum.
> Others claimed that council recognizing October as GLBT History Month was a waste
> of their time. Some members of the audience even suggested that any council
> members voting in favor of the proclamation may have trouble getting reelected.
> Numerous residents also claimed the Bible was their guiding light, citing the ancient
> text as their primary reason for opposing the proclamation and the GLBT community
> in general.

> And for those in attendance, it was hard to ignore the intolerant grumblings, the
> exasperated sighs and cold, hard stares that followed comments from supporters of
> the GLBT proclamation. Even most council members admitted that a majority of the
> e-mails and phone calls they fielded regarding the proclamation were against it.

    • Dear religious zealots at the Norman Oklahoma town hall meeting...

You believe God created man in his image, do you not?
A number of the people that walk the earth are gay...

Does this not make God just a little gay?

      i've always wondered that myself...
because they claim God is perfect and therefore everything is in his image and for his master plan , so why are Gay people excluded from that plan?

they aren't and there are no versus in the bible that say that God hated Gay people.
Jesus was friends with a prostitute , i dont think he would have minded a gay person.

      just sayin

They're mad as hell and tired of taking it anymore. People get fed so many lies it kinda builds up. They also have gobs of QUESTIONS that are not receiving answers, much less satisfactory ones.

When I beat the cancer I was taking so many multivitamins they began poisoning me. People are being poisoned by real poison. Think of it like this Bailey.

It's sort of like what happens when cows see a fence every which way they turn. Even the dumb ones begin to realize the barnyard, it ain't no courtyard. And the gold sidewalk has become the cattle chute.

I've been taking Krill oil and I just ate a big bowl of cooked Yellow Onions to kill off the bloodborne parasites again. I'm good. Thanks. A smidgeon of housebound housitosis maybe. I was very ill as a teenager with no energy from the thyroid inherited from the wrong parent so my Immune System didn't have any strength either... so I went through a year of clinical depression after Dad passed away.

I tried to flip the old heavy 58 Chevy in a hairpin curve at 88 miles per hour. Felt the wheels lifting off the ground on the right side too. But then I let off the gas and they came back down to the road.

I went to a number of funerals as a little child from men in the family doing suicide. Men who are super-logical are easily bludgeoned by this world under Satan.

That's why Satan gets so angry with me because he took my Dad a few uncles, and a cousin who also shot and killed his 7YO son. He took so many of us and would like me too so when I know the Bible like I do and don't get sad it just wrecks his whole day, week, month, years. hahahahaha

Thanks. I inherited my thyroid gland from the wrong parent so I didn't have the energy required to have a very high mental or physical health. The hormones were incompatible with body cells. After failing my family on about every level I got well, some better.

Then somehow I started solving new engine systems without having been trained by any trade schools. How come your name has 1989? My big life-changing accident was on March 27. I made a poor judgement call from being blood poisoned by the wrong thyroid, a mental fog it had me in for decades. So I managed to get hit by a 1,000 pound bale fell 8 feet then bounced on me 3 more times... and propelled me forward then down my chest being vector-forced at an angle into the ground.

Of course you don't have to answer. Sometimes I see 1989 pop up in news reports and all kinds of places.

Thanks to 30 years of the baby boomers destroying our education system, and allowing a small percentage of people tell us how we are supposed to raise our children.

No spankings, no transfats, no fighting. Hows that working for you.?

      You don't make any sense.

Oppressed1 said that there wasn't an influx of suicides in the 1930's (during the Great Depression), when in fact there clearly was. There were no slaves in the 1930's, so I really don't know what that has to do with absolutely anything. My post is not "apples and oranges" because that would imply I was making a comparison, which I am not. I was stating that his perception of suicide during the 30's is inaccurate.

I think people assume it goes against the family values and having man and woman marry with kids, however I see lots of couple that gay- practicing these same values.

What you don't get is this is not an isolated incident.

Gay children endure this their entire lives, being told they have no value whatsoever. They are sinners, they are sick, that somehow they made a "choice" and if they don't become straight it's their fault and they will go to hell.

It is a constant flood of condemnation- often coming from their own parents who have no idea their kids are gay.

They don't know that some people are bigots and assholes- they, just like the bigots, believe that gays really are inferior.

There's something you don't seem to get, and that it doesnt matter if its isolated or otherwise, it comes down to a personal choice. If you have little self-value then you have nothing left to do but take what people tell you. This kid had very little self-value.

How tough it is to be hated... (LOL) I was condemned all through school too, for thinking different, oh noes I'm a heretic... Who cares? Seriously. Who hasn't been on the butt-end of the popular sway? Just because the issue is 'sexuality' doesn't make it any different. If you're comfortable with yourself, wtf does it matter what people call you? It doesn't make the nay-sayers guiltless, but they did not kill the kid. His own poor self-image (probably due to poor parenting) is to blame. If it takes you more than 12 years to figure out the world sucks and everyone is an asshole, then you know what, you're probably better off dead.

You know my life so well. How about forming an actual argument? What's the point of feeling sorry for him? What does that get us? Anywhere useful? What's his wasted life good for now? There's never an excuse be to weak, ever, unless of course you're spineless and let the world shape you. Get a spine, get a life, discover yourself and live. It really is that simple. This kid did none of those things.

There's something you don't seem to get- people develop very little self value if everyone, including their own parents, tell them they have no value.

The point is this is something completely different from you being picked on because of your haircut.

The point is they are NOT comfortable with themselves. Again- if everyone in your life is saying gays are sinners, or gays are sick, or gays are going to hell, including the parents, then your self-esteem is zero.

This is a culture-wide problem, not an individual occurrence.

I am thinking. I'm thinking "Why were you searching on google image for the word gay?"

But more importantly, you believe the liberal media and gays themselves perhaps have perpetuated an ugly stereotype on themselves about what "being gay" is.
You think all gay people dress like those three men above? You think only gay people dress like those three men above? I think you're wishing that those type of guys were the gay stereotype, so you could blame the gays (and of course the liberal media) because they "choose" to dress like that (so what else did they choose?).

Being gay is about liking someone of the same sex. Boys like boys, girls like girls. That's the long and short of it.
And dogs are NOT scared of gay people because some of them dress up for halloween. Because if that was the case they'd be scared of straight people too.

ayipis is right, gay people paint an ugly picture of themselves. You don't see the regular dressed gay people on the street and draw an ugly conclusion. But when you see people acting as the ones in the picture, and I don't care if it's three guys or gals or a mix of all the above it paints an ugly picture of that roll. If that's a Halloween costume then they have very very poor taste in public. I'm sure the 3 and 4 year old girls were fully clear on what they were looking at.

How do you know that's in public? It's looks like three guys on what appears to be a boat. And I've seen straight people dress up like that, in public no less (you ever heard of a rave?). Bigots choose to pretend as if a few gays dressing up for a party or halloween is what created the negative stereotype, but what they don't realize is straight people do loads of things that paint an ugly picture of heterosexuality, but there more interested in going after the gays. Gay does not equal weirdo, despite how much you want it to.
Gays did not create a negative stereotype of themselves, being gay is considered a negative lifestyle choice.

BUT, do i fly a rainbow flag on my car or in my yard, hell no I don't have a statement to make about who I am, I am me and no one else. Honestly I think when they paint that ugly picture of gays, when str8s paint that ugly picture of hetro it's simply disgusting. I'm a gay and think your being judgmental but i wont call you a self loather because i don't see that. There was a time when showing arms was slutty and inappropriate but we evolved past that. In due time we will learn to just shut the fuck up and accept people. I dont care (or agree) what everyone wears but thats beyond the point if i am not going to like or dislike someone it is going to be because their character (or lack of) not because of the outfits they chose to wear. AND i dont dress up and have been harassed on the street being called "fag!" when im going for my daily jog and i live in one of the best states for homosexual rights so i can only imagine how it is elsewhere if im the one who is privileged.

How is that photo a negative thing? They're males wearing the equivalent of bathing suits & posing with expressions on their faces.... Am I missing something?

What is wrong with the photo? Is it bad that the one man is touching the other's thigh? Or maybe it's bad that the other guy is wearing a cape?

Perhaps it's a sin for the guy on the right to have those lines on his head? Or maybe speedo-type attire is bad? Or is it that their heads are too close together?

Or, maybe it's that the standing one bleached his hair...

being gay is not a lifestyle. you choose to live a lifestyle. being a closet-case or well adjusted is a lifestyle.

there is nothing in this article about imposing any "lifestyle" on anyone else, so quit changing the subject.

i only know two gay people who have a rainbow in their yard out of the hundreds of gay people i've met over the years; and they're a couple. you're seriously referring to an extreme minority of the community.

it's all good to have an opinion about public displays of semi-nudity; but that has nothing to do with this kids suicide. it's completely side tracking the real issue here. there are plenty of posts on the site about public nudity or being prude that you can comment on. if you have an opinion on this, feel free to share it!

      Actually, You've got it backwards.

For all practical purposes, it was the LGTB community that was trying to force the religious community of Norman to recognize October as THEIR MONTH, and unfortunately this caused the religious community to become reactionary.

Now I'm not saying one group is more right than the other, but let's be honest and recognize the situation for what it was:

No Christians were forcing any gays to do anything, they were simply excercising their right to free speech, which should be a hallmark for any society which considers itself to be "free."

And on top of that it is beyond ridiculous to tie the man's suicide to this townhall meeting. This article is written with such an bias that it is clearly obvious that it was only written to take pot shot a Christians.

I would love to tell these Christians they are fucking with Pandora's box, separation of church and states protects religion from government and government from religion. Once you opened the flood gates of things to over lap it is fine to have a radical anti-catholic and just overall anti-religious movement. and this might happen and it will be there own fault for using religion as a legal "excuse". No matter how tolerant i try to be with religion it is coming to the point where i feel you cant fight this type of intolerance with tolerance. and its about time that the church and all those child fuckers fell because without government charitable tax breaks (which it taken through MY money) most of them wouldn't be able to function . We need to abort religion because its head is too large to push through our pelvic brim without killing us.

"What do people have against gay people?" Well, there are two general types:

1.) Those who are actually repressed gays themselves & hate those who are free.

2.) Prudes who are fixated with the sex lives of other people, & seek to impose their "values" (silly rules) on everyone else.

    • I think it's simply a distraction. Plus I agree with the end of the story, to tie a suicide to a single town hall meeting is a stretch to say the least, this boy had some problems besides all that. I'm sure that gay people have been killing themselves often for sometime but makes ya wonder when the media starts picking up and exploiting everyone of them. What's the agenda anyway?

    • Is it just me..or is there a Concentrated effort at a Full on Psychological Assault on the LGBT community. Since we live in such a litigious society...I think the Anti-Gay Pro-Hate movement has found an effective way to to torture and by proxy murder young gay individuals. I mean..why risk getting sued or going to jail for physical bullying , bashing and assault? It's a lot easier to psychologically torture and batter a young person into hurting themselves. It's such a shame and so angering...we need laws for this kind of behavior. Yes I know... That is a slippery slope there.

I don't think it's organized, or on purpose.

It's just pure ignorance on display.

People don't know what homosexuality is, they don't even understand their own sexuality, and they spew out hatred because that is what they were told, and what their parents were told, all the way back.

As time has gone on, more and more people are becoming educated, and the ignorance is going away.

It is the prefect crime if so, fire small bullets and wait over time as each one hits the target. It could be days week months years but at some point they end up dead and you have 1,000 other reasons why they are dead and your hands are "clean" . Gonna be a movie nerd for a second but if you have ever seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang its almost the same thing that happened with the sister. " You fired the gun twenty years ago, it just took this long to hit" or something along those lines it was the ending quote. Really good (and funny) movie.

    • Gravity man - Judas was in God's plan for Jesus' betrayal....He had to be betrayed in order to die for our sins.....Jeffrey and Hitler was all part of Satan's plan not God's!!!! Judas was so overcome with shame and grief that he took his own life....and if you recall He even forgave the thief on the Cross next to him....only God knows what is in your heart!!!! Hatred does not come from God......it is totally Satan's realm!!!! God is Love!! It is sad that poor young man lost his life....there is always Hope and it is a shame those so called Christians was not capable of showing God's love for their fellow man!!
Alex - Jesus is not a religion!!! He is a way of Life!! He tells us there will be a lot of so called Christians not make it to Heaven!! ...and a lot you didnt think would make it that will!!! It is up to God not us!!
It never ceases to amaze me how much hate is vented in the comments here on almost every subject!!
Hatred, prejudice, greed, Satan truly is alive and well on Planet Earth!! Gravity Man...that too is all part of God's plan!!!!
rhetoricallyineffective - FYI...before the Bible....they actually had visits from God ....and since the beginning of time God's word was passed down from generation to generation.....then he sent the reminder with Moses....you know....the 10 commandments.....then Jesus was sent to remind us....and the Bible was written to record those reminders.....next time we see Jesus, and we will....it's gonna make you a believer!!

You have a lot of ideas and most seem to be in agreement here but consider this, that if the people before us had not lived -and even done their evil acts- then the resulting world would have been different; with Daumer less so, with Hitler, much so. But Hitler helped both sides. Another thing Hitler has done recently was when I came to realize the reason he turned so bad was he was sent to a Benedictine school while a young teen thereabouts.

Chances are young Hitler was sexually abused by Benedictine priests.

The Swastika Hitler designed... where did THAT come from hmm? The same place! I looked into it a few weeks ago and found out the Benedictine school had historical swastikas all over the place, even having one on their entry gate. Hitler learned to hate the Catholic Church and realized his Life's destiny was to destroy this monster that has boy-molesting priests and looked the other way as if it was a normal rite of passage.

The present Pope is a Benedict also, and he has shown his true colors have not changed since his people created the murderous Adolph Hitler => still trying to cover over the reality of what his people did => the Roman Catholic Church caused world war to issue forth from Hitler in his self-appointed quest to destroy the evil Catholic Church [by starting a World War that would swallow them up].

So you see, Hitler had a very great part in God's Plan, because Chapter 18 of Revelation explains in great detail what God plans for false religion, of which the RMC is a significant part. Had the Benedictine priests obeyed clear Bible instruction not to have pagan symbols in their possession -as they did the many swastikas as if they were a swastika museum- we might not find the stream of time advanced along as far as it is toward the fulfillment of Ch. 18 prophecies.

Although of course if it hadn't been Hitler it would've happened anyway. All of God's great plans succeed. Even the Pope right now is playing his part to the HILT => http://idle.slashdot.org/story/10/10/12/1328215/Pope-Says-Technology-Causes-Conf... Picture => http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/technologies+confuse+reality+fiction+Pope/36...

I hope you recognize me as a believer already...

That's quite a theory. However according to what I read the Swastiers at the monastery were placed there in the 1800s by the ruling Abbot as a pun or play on words. His name essentially sounded like the German word for swastika, Hakenkreuz.

Also I doubt Hitler was sexually abused because later in his life he said that the was intoxicated by the ecclesiastical splendor and looked up to the Abbot as the highest and most desirable ideal. The Swastiker then appears to have been adopted in adoration for the methods of the church.

This isn't to say Hitler was willing to give the Catholic Church any slack. In a 1933 Corcordat with the Catholic Church one of Hitlers explicit requirements was that Roman Catholics (who Hitler feared could derail the Nazis) could no longer involve themselves in Germany's politics. In order to get the Concordat passed Pius XII complied with Hitlers demands. What this did was removed the last true barrier to Hitlers power. It is asserted "that the fact that the [Center Catholic] party voluntarily disbanded itself, rather than go down fighting, had a profound psychological effect which deprived Germany of the "last democratic focus of potential noncompliance and resistance" To add insult to injury many Catholics subsequently joined the Nazi Party.

The machinations of Pius Xll therefore had a huge impact on Hitler rise to power. The rest as they say, is history.

Thanks for the additional information but Jesus instructed his disciples and his apostles both to preach not to set up swastika museums. Young Hitler didn't go there in the 1800's either so it looks doubtful he "looked up to" that Abbot. The early Christians were to have no "pagan" or "heathen" objects of veneration in their possession at any time [partly to avoid being permeated with demonic angels influence], which the Swastika had been for several thousand years.

So you see how all these violations of what Jesus told them to do led to some very terrible results. In Paul's writings he said to #1 "quit touching the unclean thing" and #2 "keep yourselves from idols" and #3 "what sharing does Light have with Darkness".

The Catholic Church will eat the bread of God's Wrath for so completely misleading the nations to worship falsely.

Thanks again Mark. Your fine research bolsters my conclusions even more. The deeper the apostasy & corruption became the very natural result was the spawning of a very murderous fellow... who was very likely raped under a swastika carving on their wall, impressing upon the man's mind what he needed to do to them.
