D.A.R.E.: Ripping Families Apart Since 1983

When it comes to its stated mission—keeping school-age children from trying illicit drugs—the D.A.R.E. program has been a failure. But D.A.R.E. does have a fun history of teaching kids to turn their pot-smoking parents in to the police.

It happened again last week:

The 11-year-old student is in 5th grade at a an elementary school in Matthews. Police say he brought his parents' marijuana cigarettes to school when he reported them.

Matthews Police say he reported his parents after a lesson about marijuana was delivered by a police officer who is part of the D.A.R.E. program, which teaches kids about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them," said Matthews Officer Stason Tyrrell. That's what they're told to do, to make us aware."..

Police arrested the child's 40-year-old father and 38-year-old mother on Thursday.

Both were charged with two misdemeanor counts each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were not jailed and were released on a written promise to appear in court...

Police say both the 11-year old and a sibling have been removed from the parents' house by social services.

Proving once again that pot ruins lives. Not because of the drug itself, but because of what the government will do to you if they catch you with it.

    • DARE Drugs are really everything, my cynical son said that to the DARE officer 12 years ago, just graduated university, 3.6 gp he knew before anyone told him they were lying. Drugs are dangerous, but weed, not quite

    • If I had to guess,
      it can only be NC.

What's the worst thing you did buzzed on Smoke?

I'd have to admit, I argued with the GPS,
then realized I passed up this town 3 hours before.
Pulled into gas station and see all the good cookies are gone.
      Now I'm pissed.

    • I view D.A.R.E. as nearly a complete fuck up of a program for two reasons.

      1) D.A.R.E. did not educate kids about the accurate consequences and effects of taking drugs. D.A.R.E. fed kids a bunch of bullshit about how all drugs will turn you into a hardcore druggie the first time you take them. Yes, the hardcore narcotics which include meth, cocaine, and heroine have a very, VERY, high risk of getting the user hooked the first time. However, alcohol, tobacco, and weed do not.

      2) Telling kids that they shouldn't do something under any circumstances is, for the most part, kind of counter productive. If you tell a kid not to do something, what are they going to do 4 out of 5 times? Probably what you told them not to do.

    • Dare actually piqued my curiosity for drugs. I wondered what was so great about them that people risked getting arrested to do them. I probably never would have smoked weed had Dare not told me not too. On the flip-side, in fourth grade one of my classmates actually did bring her parents weed to school after an anti-drug demonstration. I am not sure if her parents got in legal trouble. I actually suspect that the teacher didn't notify the police but rather contacted the parents and told them to be more careful.

    • This is a reality, with many more instances to come... under the potential passing of Proposition 19. This would become a Matter of Public Safety over Public Health.

    • How the fuck is this tolerable? Seriously? I don't get it. Not at all.

They LOST both of their CHILDREN? Because of pot? In North Carolina? What the fuck? Since when was this defined as justice? Since when do we the American people allow our government to take away our offspring because we like to relax our nerves every now and then. Either I've missed something like "the parent's were found smoking crack when police intruded the home" or "a kiddy porn dungeon was found in the basement." NOT "well... smoking pot is illegal... so we can do whatever we want and you can't say shit. You love your kids? Well not anymore! HAHAHA"

Everything I've just read is prime inhumanity in humanity.

    • I graduated from the D.A.R.E program during 5th grade in June of 1999. Two weeks into my summer vacation, sitting around the dinner table with my family watching the Detroit evening news, the picture of my DARE officer flashed on the television screen. He was reported breaking into the bedroom window of a teenage girl and tried to force sex upon her. I don't know if he was on drugs or not, but it surely slates the D.A.R.E program as full of shit.

    • Its great that we use bias information to "inform" children about drugs. But when we say we want to talk about sex or even mention masturbation n sex ed the pta has their panties in a bunch! I wonder if when i am a parent if can pull my child out of DARE like people pull their children out of sex ed? I am NOT lazy, i will TALK to my child like every parent should! On top of that dare shouldnt be taught by police they need to be taught my scientist, chemist and medical professionals!

I know right! Thats how some start too! If you wanna see something scary look up meth on wiki and right next to it there is a medication for ADHD which is METH! not just amphetamines but meth! I'm sorry but if you need to give someone that ADHD is not that bad! Depending on the strain and person pot can help people with adhd. and thats like water compared to meth.

    • haha, I have a very clear memory of my dad telling me, when he found out my school was doing D.A.R.E. for all the 5th graders, "Whatever you do, don't tell them mommy and daddy smoke."

I will say that I took it seriously and didn't try *any* drugs or alcohol until I was in my early 20's. I was genuinely afraid. But I've come to try and discover on my own what's truly poison and what is just government paranoia. I only wish I had this truthful, accurate info back then.

but seriously though, I would be so fucking pissed off.

Kids always snoop around. I knew where everything was in my house when I was that age. If you have kids you've got to have a little lock box or a safe for the stuff your kids shouldn't know about.

    • I take exception to this program. The local law enforcement comes to all the 5th grade classes in our county representing the DARE program and when they come into the classrooms they are strapped. They are wearing their side arms. Now what kind of message is that sending 5th graders, Is there really going to a situation in a 5th grade class or elementary school for that matter where and officer of the law would need a sidearm? I can't imagine any scenario in an elementary school where a gun would be needed, yet these cops come into a 5th grade class dressed like para military and the teachers or principles don't seem to pick up on this like some kind of drones.

Darn right. The biggest problem with DARE is that they use fear to teach their lesson. Any organization that uses fear to get their message across can not be trusted.

Your right to say fuck em for people who do it right in front of their children. But we do not have all the facts. Where the parents doing it in front of the children and the 11 year old turned them in. Or was the child snooping around came across it? Two very different circumstances.

Your absolutely right, it just strikes a nerve with me when I see people blaze up in front of they're kids. That same kid snooping and finding mommy and daddy's stash, is the same kid who is going to be stealing nuggets from them a few years later.

    • Simple solution? Stop doing the stuff in front of your kids.
Children are impressionable and love to be recognized as doing something right.

So placing children in child services is better than having them in a home of their parents who smoke Marijuana?

You say children are impressionable...yeah they won't ever tell the fucking police of illegal activities for fear that their lives could be fucked up.

It says nowhere in the article that the parents smoked marijuana in front of the kids. Maybe he found the joint in a box in his parents room and recognized it from the drug display the DARE officers bring in to show kids what drugs look like.

    • I've always believed DARE was one of the most irresponsible and unorganized programs ever made.

They consistently put tobacco, cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana in the same category, make them seem equally wrong. Then these kids go home and see mommy smoking cigarettes and daddy drinking beer over beer.

      And confusion sets in.

fuck, my school was in the ghetto and i had to walk home. That was a normal sight. And i would always be like hmmm what a wonderful smelling cigarette smells like my dad a little but not the ones he smokes in the car. lol and the whole time trying to dodge broken 40's! They make it sound like only criminals do it, when the truth is drugs are almost the only thing that can bring everyone together. Its human nature!
