Rather Than Investigating Foreclosure Fraud, House Republicans Vow To Investigate Loans To Poor People

Darrell Issa, who would head the lower chamber’s main investigative committee, told the Financial Times in an interview: “We should look at financial entities and either reform them or kill them.”
The conservative Republican from California, who would become chairman of the powerful House oversight and government reform committee, said hearings would focus on whether the federal government should be involved at all in sponsoring home loans for the poor.
The investigations would centre on the roles of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the nationalised government-sponsored lending institutions, which Republicans say contributed strongly to the 2008 meltdown by promoting subprime lending.
Mr Issa said the role of Countrywide, the bankrupt subprime lender, would also be investigated.
He did not spell out whether he would investigate alleged connections between subprime lenders and Democratic politicians.
“We need to look not only at the failure of Freddie and Fannie but even after that whether the federal government should be involved in financing home loans at all,” Mr Issa said.

“By promoting these loans we have artificially raised the price of homes – it is anti-wealth creating. The problem still hasn’t been addressed and everyone assumes it’s a system we are going back to.”
However, Mr Issa, who would replace Henry Waxman, the California Democrat, if the Republicans win next month, tried to play down talk there would be a witch-hunt of the Obama administration, as many Democrats are predicting.
He also shied away from parallels with 1995 when Newt Gingrich, the Republican Speaker, went head to head with the Clinton administration – and lost.
“Newt was engaged in shutting down the government,” said Mr Issa.
“My committee will be about opening up the government. I think [Barack] Obama would love to get in the same situation as [former president Bill] Clinton, where he can blame the Republican House. If I have a toe-to-toe with Obama it will be about the American people’s right to know. My job is to chase the failure of bureaucracy beneath Obama.”
Examples of the type of investigations that would “open up government” included looking into the role of the department of agriculture in regulating the food industry.
Mr Issa also said he would investigate the Wikileaks disclosures, which he said “animated him at a time when we are at war”.
And he spoke vaguely about “looking into dangers to democracy, dangers to the well-being of people and issues that distort democracy”.
Elsewhere, Mr Issa has hinted he would investigate last year’s “climategate” scandal as part of the alleged “politicisation of science”.
And he has also mentioned the White House’s alleged role in trying to interfere in Democratic primary elections to influence challengers to drop out.
“If you have the power of subpoena, then your letters get answered,” he said.
“People say: ‘Issa will serve 1m subpoenas’. Well no. We won’t need to do that. Just having the power of subpoena should be enough to bring in the whistle- blowers.”

http://consumerist.com/2009/02/whats-in-this-new-obama-foreclosure-plan.html
With the economic stimulus (or "e-stim," as we've been calling it) signed into law, President Obama turns his attention to the foreclosure crisis. At an event in Arizona today, he announced the following proposals to help homeowners.
Four to five million ineligible homeowners who borrowed from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be able to refinance their mortgages at a lower rate.
Any institution that wants to receive any government assistance will have to abide by new guidelines (which will be announced in two weeks) that make it easier for homeowners to refinance their primary residences. Monthly payments will not exceed 31% of homeowner's income.
President Obama expects his plan to cost $75 billion, but argues that this will eventually be offset by fewer foreclosures and defaults.

so what would happen after we spend $75 BILLION??

Bank of America Corp. ended its freeze on foreclosures in 23 states earlier than some analysts had expected, but it is still reviewing its actions in California and 26 other states to make sure its attempts to seize homes complied with the states' laws.
BofA, the largest mortgage servicer and only major bank to impose a nationwide foreclosure moratorium, said it would begin asking judges in the 23 states for approval to seize a total of about 102,000 homes beginning Oct. 25.
That is just 24 days after it announced the freeze — a far faster resolution than the months of delays some analysts had predicted for the nation's battered housing markets.
Bank of America announced its initial moratorium Oct. 1 after two other major mortgage lenders, Ally Financial Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co., said they would halt foreclosures in 23 states where court approval is required before banks can seize homes of borrowers who default.

I hate to say it...but I don't get why anyone is supporting these guys. I never see any of this trash from Dems. In combination to saying No to extending Jobless benefits to the millions of...I'm sorry, MILLIONS of unemployed, to rejecting aid for 911 Hero's who to help with their health issues resulting from SAVING PEOPLE'S LIVES, to saying NO to RESUMING the regular taxes for those making over 250k a year.
Is there any questions who they're actually helping?

The ones you should be talking to are Republicans. Big corporations are running this country. The packages you speak about was placed there to help common Americans. Big corporations do not want this. The fact is they are making even higher profits on the backs of hard working Americans. They are taking their businesses elsewhere and selling their products back to Americans who can barely afford them. They pay these other countries slave wages and continue to make higher profits. Guess what? They don't have a problem getting health care. Hell they even get their pick of the best doctors. Of course President Obama is taking that right away from you right? Guess what? If you are like the majority of Americans, you never had it. Please either educate yourself or continue to let those such as Oriley and Hannity lead you like a "dumb sheep". Prisident Obama is trying to close the gap between the rich and people like yourself. Its not going happen if the big businesses continue to force the country to fail. They have already taken everything they need from us common Americans. The fact is they are very smart. Lots of money has been spent to ensure failure. They are banking on people such as youself ensuring they continue to run America. Don't be ignorant. Educate yourself and look at the big picture. You may become proud of yourself someday and realize that you have a true idea of whats really going on.

Nicely put. I can see that at least you are paying attention. Republicans are too busy trying to make sure the democrats fail at the fate of Americans. The problem is we are too busy blaming those trying to help Americans and not realizing that the real culprits are the ones ensuring that we all fail. Unbelievable!!!
