The most rapidly growing religious category today is composed of those Americans who say they have no religious affiliation. While middle-aged and older Americans continue to embrace organized religion, rapidly increasing numbers of young people are rejecting it.As recently as 1990, all but 7% of Americans claimed a religious affiliation, a figure that had held constant for decades. Today, 17% of Americans say they have no religion, and these new "nones" are very heavily concentrated among Americans who have come of age since 1990. Between 25% and 30% of twentysomethings today say they have no religious affiliation — roughly four times higher than in any previous generation.
So, why this sudden jump in youthful disaffection from organized religion? The surprising answer, according to a mounting body of evidence, is politics. Very few of these new "nones" actually call themselves atheists, and many have rather conventional beliefs about God and theology. But they have been alienated from organized religion by its increasingly conservative politics.

"Faith... must be enforced by reason... when faith becomes blind it dies."
Mohandas GandhiI think each person should evaluate their own beliefs and know why they stand where they stand. It's important to look at all sides before coming to a conclusion and this takes time, research, and a little soul searching.

Organized religion is NOTHING but a scam. It always has been and always will be. I believe that everybody has a right to believe what they want to believe. Just do not push your belief's on me and I won't push my non-belief's on you.
The only thing we know for sure is that we do not know anything for sure.

Yeah ive noticed this being a young adult myself. Living in New York many of my friends are either atheist or "non-practicing" Christians, myself included. You dont need religion to be a good person and i feel like as time goes on less and less people feel the need to resort to millenia old superstition. Its silly really... do people ask Zeus for guidance any longer? Or how about Amun-Ra or Baal? So why put your faith in God or Jesus? Theres about as much proof that they exist as there is proof that Shiva exists.

This is quite well linked to one of the arguments most atheists have about people from any religion treating them as crazy for not believing in a god. There are thousands of different deities out there yet most people now a days only believe in one if they believe in any. If that monotheist let's say, doesn't believe in 1000 gods because they think those religions to be ridiculous, an atheist simply shares those exact same opinions for 1000+1 gods.
How much respect would a christian show someone who was trying to impose the will of Mercury into our law books? Or how about someone who wanted to supplant the teaching of the theory of the shape of the earth with the theory of the world-turtle(s)?

I don't have any religious affiliation but I'm not an atheist either. I'm open to any and all religions and to learning about them. I wasn't raised this way either, it's just something that I've developed over the years and with how Christianity is being portrayed as so close minded and ignorant, that's why I don't have any religious affiliation. Maybe if Christianity was more open minded and accepting of other people like gays, lesbians, Muslims, Jews, and people that aren't just straight white bible thumping males/females, then maybe I would be a Christian.

Atheism seems a little arrogant for me. This existence came from somewhere. The Big Bang came from some "source". What is that "source"?

You got it wrong. Atheism is the exact NON-ARROGANT dichotomy to religious belief. Atheist fully admit that there are unanswered questions regarding life , how we got here and how we came to be.. We fully admit to NOT KNOWING...Unlike what I call "RELIGITARDS" ... they claim to HAVE the answers...ALL THE ANSWERS... Personally I believe it's all random..I know Atheist who could give you scientific theories regarding the Big Bang and how we formed form cosmic dust... But Arrogance is certainly not a part of Atheism. You have to claim to know everything to be arrogant.. I simply DO NOT believe in the almighty SkyWizard.. No I have not suffered any more trauma and heartache that anyone else..No I wasn't molested by a church pastor... I simply don't believe in deities. Does that prove he doesn't exist..certainly NOT.. But believing in deities doesn't PROVE they do exist...
Take comfort though..This Atheist is 39 and still can't sleep with an open closet door..because ...well..yes..I do believe in the "Closet Monster:...have I ever seen him..No... But I know he's there.

How is it arrogant to admit that you don't have the answer and you are comfortable with your beliefs?... It is arrogant that the religious population believes that a book written thousands of years ago , during a time where science was unheard of and life and existence was mired in superstition should dictate and dominate us til this day.. it is arrogant to believe that one has all the answers. We don't have the answers. We don't know.... But at least atheist don't just MAke up stories and say.."Well there was a guy named Noah..40 days and 40 nights of rain.. Every animal on the planet was there..carnivores didn't eat herbavores....THere was this talking snake that made the chick eat the apple....I mean... talk about arrogance. I'm sorry if my being comfortable in my disbelief comes across as arrogant..but the fact is, only a person who wishes to make atheist seem arrogant because it's the only way to discredit and ignore their valid points , because it makes folks of faith feel ridiculous, would see it that way.
Anyway..at least younger people are walking away from this crap.

We have black history, recently a national holiday, for gays and transgenders under Obama. If you are really arguing for forgetting without atonement than you would have to abolish the holidays that remind minorities that white Americans view them differently, therefore they are different, than we would move forward to your "happy society".

I feel they might be walking away from church but not from God!! But....I have noticed quite a difference in churches now from decades ago.....they have become more relaxed and flexible.....a lot have early and later services to appeal to more people and the dress has become quite a bit different....more relaxed and not so stuffy. There seems to be several churches leaning more toward acceptance and being spiritual...just being yourself and enjoying each other's company. We need to be a forgiving people, more accepting of our fellow man no matter what. God loves us all and so should we!!!

I count myself as one of those young 25%, and unlike the article's insinuation, I am an atheist.
I have my reasons, but I will say that the completely cynical manipulation of Christianity that's been going on since the 1980's would be enough to turn anyone off from the faith.
I actually had a good experience in my church growing up, but there were definitely right-wing people in there that were just utterly despicable. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if even a person of heavy faith turned away in disgust and went non-denominational.
