Student named Mexico police chief as nobody else wanted the job

A 20-year-old criminology student has been named chief of police in a Mexico town that's rife with drugs and crime, because nobody else wanted the job.

Marisol Valles became 'director of municipal public security of Guadalupe' when she was the only person willing to accept the position. The town is near the US border and has a population of 10,000 people. 60km away in Ciudad Juarez, where Valles studies, turf battles between rival drug gangs have left 6500 people dead in the last three years. Since 2006, 28,000 have been killed in Mexico's drug wars.

Since Valles evidently has her work cut out for her, she'll presumably be supported by a huge department and a hefty amount of equipment, right?

Not quite. The mayor's office, which Valles' department reports into, has only one police patrol car and relies on the army for security assistance. Ah.

- owing the news, but i feel i am supposed to help this town for some reasoni am 44yrs old and certified as a police officer in two usa states....i did all kinds of police work and investigations and trainning of officers....i specialized in getting narcotics off the streets...i have been trying to contact the proper people about this sheriffs job...i am very interested and i know the danger it intails....but with the right men and trainning i believe i can help this town and its people..i know my job and i am honest and hardworking and believe in the law...please contact me if this sheriffs position is open. i know it dont pay much and its dangerous. please contact me if you still need a sheriff.....

  After she stepped forward last year to take a job no one else wanted because of the drug-related violence — police chief in the Mexican border town of Praxedis G. Guerrero — Marisol Valles was called the "bravest woman in Mexico."
  
  Now, she's the ex-police chief. Valles, 21, was "fired Monday for apparently abandoning her post after receiving death threats," the Associated Press reports.
  
  ABC's World News with Diane Sawyer reported Friday that Valles had left Mexico after receiving death threats and is seeking political asylum in the U.S.

- She's just putting up a front, what a smart girl. She can get paid off by the cartels and keep her dayjob at the same time. What a easy way to pay for an education. When Calderon asks why she hasn't arrested any gangsters she can just say lack of resources, but look at the nice articles I've given.
