Egypt and the election: a whole lot of theater?

Aimee_Kligman
President Hosni Mubarak has been at the helm in Egypt for a quarter of a century plus....Since his rise to power, he has ruled Egypt with an iron fist. Elections, for all intents and purposes, are rife with fraud and the Egyptian government's will to silence the opposition, whether it be media or bloggers is a force with which one has to reckon. All too familiar are the reports of police brutality, beatings resulting in deaths, rulings and regulations which are put in place at the eleventh hour to serve the needs of the ruling party.

The United States considers Egypt one of its "strongest" allies in the Middle East. No surprise there. Certainly, there are meek attempts at criticizing human rights for the folks back home, but nothing really speaks in the way that money, or arms deals do, and those carrots are out there, and being savored by the Egyptian administration.
