Shane Thompson, 20, who lives west of Boca Raton, took the dead, three-legged dog, named Moonshine, to Cole Animal Clinic in Boca Raton on Oct. 7, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Thompson told the staff that his pet, a wolf-dog mix, had died that morning, possibly from a seizure.
A veterinarian examined the dog and found it had bruised ears and a bloody nose. Moonshine had food stuck in his throat and likely choked to death, the vet said, according to the report.
The same day, a friend of Thompson's called Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control to say he believed Thompson had killed his pet. He said Thompson had called asking for money to pay for the cremation.
"Our investigators spent lots of hours trying to find that dog," animal control Capt. David Walesky said Thursday.
They eventually tracked down the dog at the animal clinic and demanded that the staff release the body. A necropsy concluded that Moonshine, who was less than a year old, had been beaten and then choked to death.
Investigators interviewed Thompson's roommate and friends, who all said they had seen Thompson abusing Moonshine in an attempt to discipline the animal.
At one point, Thompson's roommate told detectives Thompson bit off a piece of the dog's ear.
If convicted, Thompson faces up to five years in prison.
According to the police report, he and his roommate bought the dog in February.
When Thompson's roommate arrived home from work on Oct. 7, Moonshine lay dead on the floor. Thompson said the dog tried to bite him but never explained how he died.
Animal control investigators had been called to the apartment twice since February after getting complaints that the puppy was heard yelping in pain. But the dog was unhurt and didn't seem scared, Walesky said, so they issued Thompson a warning.
"There are a lot of people who are heavy-handed, but that's not a reason to take their dog away," Walesky said. "We can do something if the dog is hurt or terrified of someone."

So the roommate had no idea the dog was being abused? Hm...

Oh my gosh, you really changed the headline AND the original submission! Wowie!
What I am REALLY liking immensely is your added links in regard to animal cruelty, etc. Brava! Nice job!
I hope that, after the second necropsy, this dog-killer gets more than a simple fine and a slap on the wrist. And let's all not forget about the damn roommate, for goodness sake! BOTH may be equally responsible, especially based on the article's mentioning previous times of the puppy crying in pain.

Man kills dog, gets arrested. George Bush kills a couple hundred thousand innocent civilians, retires a wealthy man. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

The fact that this dog-killer is gay has nothing to do with his act of cruelty.
The fact that this dog-killer is a porn actor has nothing to do with his act of cruelty.
The fact that he killed his dog is unforgivable. My heart grieves for all the suffering this innocent dog had to endure before his body finally gave out on him.
This dog-killer needs to spend significant time in jail, and then he must serve at least six months working (under supervision) with abused/abandoned animals in various sanctuaries.
The original tags submitted ("gay," "porn") in regard to this horrendous act shouldn't be there - it reeks of bigotry and, again, has absolutely NOTHING to do with what this dog-killer did to another being.
Of course, I also hate the article's use of the word "it" instead of "her" or "him." This poor, tortured and abused wolf-dog was a living, breathing, precious gift... not a thing.

Sorry, I changed the title around as well. I didn't mean for it to be taken that way at all, at the time I just thought it made the topic seem more interesting. Now that I read it, you're right, it shouldn't be there.
Thanks for editing the tags. - 1 year ago

Totally glad you brought that up about this dog-killer's job. It doesn't matter, it just plain doesn't. I'd take out "Adult Film Actor," frankly. Then replace that with "Man" or "Person." Although..... in my private rage, I might even use his actual NAME, instead of those last two.

You both are right, it really doesn't have to do with anything in the story. I edited the title and article again, and thank you both for the criticism. I honestly didn't care about his profession, but I was thinking other people might, but it's true- if he was a plumber it wouldn't matter, so why put it up there now? I'm going to add a link to a site that has tips if you suspect animal abuse or neglect. Thanks again, and if you think anything else should be added to it, just tell me.

Do you live in South Florida because I've only seen this story running in the local papers down here. The Sun Sentinel's headline actually said "Gay- Pornstar" when describing Mr.Thompson. I thought that the original vet ruled that his dog had choked to death and then it took the police to get a tip and re-do an autopsy. If so, the original vet should have a suspended license because it would be obvious if someone choked and punched their dog to death.

Well as seen above we decided the fact that he was gay and a pornstar doesn't have to do with the issue.
No, I don't live in Florida, but this article caught my attention.I'm not sure which story is correct, this one from the website or the one from your local paper (I would think the latter). Do you have a link to the other newspapers article? I'd be glad to add it to the story.
The vet said to re-do an autopsy? So I'm assuming the original vet did the first autopsy right? I would also think it would be obvious... they should look into that vets expertise.

This is the link. It is the story ran in the Miami Herald. I think he originally took it to a vet that said it was natural death, then the police got a tip froom his roomate and investigated further.

Thanks for the link! I think your article is more accurate, so I'm going to edit the post to the Miami Herald article. I didn't know the puppy only had 3 legs...that's even worse. Thanks again, though.

IF that puppy was born with only three legs, then the puppy knew no other way to be. But if it turns out that it was ABUSE that caused the loss of one of his little legs, I'm getting more and more pissed off by the second.
And how the hell did these two people GET the puppy in the first place?! Wasn't there a screening, followed by a home-check?!
So I hope the necropsy will include X-rays to determine the reason for his having only three legs.
