A 28-year-old LA based photographer claims he has doubled existing sleep-related records by staying awake for a yawn-inducing forty days.

Tyler Shields says he surrounded himself with a team of eagle-eyed assistants who watched him non-stop for signs of snoozing, 24 hours a day, throughout the duration of the stunt.

"I wanted to challenge myself," he told press. "A lot of people said it was impossible. A lot of people said I would never make it 40 days. Well, I did."

A lot of people reckon this is a just a publicity stunt. Shields is no stranger to the spotlight and is already semi-famous as a result of photographing celebrities like Lindsay Lohan. Throughout the challenge, he kept a blog of his efforts. No mean feat considering he'd had no sleep and should have been (according to sleep experts) experiencing severe headaches, hallucinations, paranoia and memory loss.

Dr. Michael Breus, a psychologist who specializes in sleep disorders, told reporters that the world record attempt was "highly dangerous and unhealthy," and added that he didn't think Shields managed to stay awake:

"In all likelihood he has slept," he said. "Even if he does not think that he has. Many people have what we call 'microsleeps,' where our brain will go into sleep for even a few seconds.

"I do not know of anyone attempting this length of sleep deprivation, and I am not sure it is even possible," the doctor added.

Guinness World Records officials have refused to get involved. They won't recognise his stunt as it's so hard to prove and dangerous to try.
