(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.
"It's spectacular… It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".
Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.
A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.
On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.
Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.
"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine … to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.
Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.
Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.

What was interesting about this particular piece of news was that the chinese actually admitted to it being them...not only do they have america caught financially by the short and curlies but also they have the weaponry to match..
It is a shame that colleen thomas keeps making statements that are not true and it would be good if one day something really enlightening and provable came from her..There is no joy in misleading people only if you are making money from it..sometimes it is good to apologise for your mistakes and realise we are only human after all... - 2 years ago

This photo was taken over a year ago, just next door in San Clemente, California. According to the blog Contrail Science, this contrail was also thought to have been caused by a missile, prompting concern in some circles, albeit to a much smaller degree than we’re seeing today.
The kicker? This contrail, which is arguably even more rocket-like than the one making news today, was caused by a typical commercial jet. Contrail Science explains:
The idea that it’s a missile launch comes from three misconceptions. Firstly that the trail is vertical – it’s not, it’s a horizontal trail, at around 32,000 feet (about six miles)…
Secondly there’s the misconception of direction, that it’s flying away from the viewer, when it’s actually flying towards the viewer. This is because the “base” of the contrail seems wider than the tip. Perspective tells the brain that this mean the base is closer. But actually you can see the base has been greatly spread by the wind…
Thirdly there’s the idea that it goes all the way down to the ground. Now that might be true if the Earth was flat, but the Earth is round, and things go beneath the horizon eventually, no matter how high they are. A plane 200 miles away but five miles up is always below the horizon.
This explanation for the contrail in San Clemente is consistent with today’s contrail in LA, meaning that the so-called rocket contrail is really just one of the hundreds of visible vapor trails left by jet engines above the LA area every day; just another long tail of condensation caused by superheated exhaust fumes. This one was just captured from an odd perspective, in unusual light, at the perfect time. From another location, or a satellite view, it would be utterly unremarkable.

If it's show of force then why don't they just call it a "test"? If a mystery nuclear missile goes firing off into space I'd like to know who the hell shot it. So someone in the US has the capability of firing a nuke without the knowledge of anyone else. I'm pretty frightened now.
Could they have been shooting at something? I don't know. If they were, it was at alien space craft of some kind. The military probably has anti-gravitational devices or something and are operating these crafts themselves. Who knows.
The events kept hidden from the public are the only ones worth seeing. It's time they let this knowledge go free.

NORAD gave the LA Times blog a bit of non-information worth consideration.
"We are aware of the unexplained contrail reported off the coast of Southern California yesterday evening," according to a statement Tuesday from the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command, which operates the U.S. and Canadian missile warning system. "At this time, we are unable to provide specific details but we are working to determine the exact nature of this event."We can confirm that there is no indication of any threat to our nation and we will provide more information as it becomes available," the statement said.
When someone makes an unannounced launch what looks to be a ballistic missile 35 miles from the nations second largest city (at sea in international waters), and 18 hours later NORAD still doesn't have any answers at all - that complete lack of information represents a credible threat to national security. If NORAD can't answer the first and last question, then I believe it is time to question every single penny of ballistic missile defense funding in the defense budget. NORTHCOM needs to start talking about what they do know, rather than leaving the focus on what they don't know.
