What's With All The Straight British High School Boys Kissing Other Boys?

Apparently a sign the anti-gay machismo fad of earlier decades is fading, British researchers quizzing 145 university and high school students found 89 percent have kissed on the lips a straight male friend, while 37 percent took part in "sustained" kissing with another man. All of these dudes, meanwhile, identify as straight and didn't see their lip smacks as sexual behavior.
> The trend toward male same-sex smooches has skyrocketed in recent years,
> Anderson said. It began on the professional soccer field, where players often share
> exuberate kisses after goals. That made kissing between men acceptable for college
> and high-school players, Anderson said. Then the players took the same behaviors
> to nights out in pubs, spreading the trend to non-athletes. Despite stereotypes of the
> homophobic jock, athletes were more likely to have kissed another man than non-
> athletes. Just over 80 percent of non-athletes had kissed a man, compared with 95
> percent of athletes.
> Of the guys in the study who hadn't shared a same-sex kiss, all found the practice
> acceptable. One student who had never kissed another lad joked with the
> researchers that when he told his friends about the study, they'd probably ensure
> that his classification changed. That night, Anderson received a text from the student
> reading, "I'm in the majority now."
The idea that two straight guys can be affectionate with each other in public isn't terribly new: In much of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, straight male friends hold hands and walk down the street with their arms around one another. Then again, much of that behavior isn't looked at as "gay" in these cultures because homosexuality is a hidden, unrecognized abnormality for plenty — a concept so foreign that seeing two men kiss couldn't be considered sexual, because two men are never sexual with each other.
The difference here, of course, is that British high school boys know plenty about The Gay. They've just discovered a more fun alternative to high fives. [Live Science]

I've never kissed another guy yet, and I don't know how that might come about, unless it was on a dare or I lost a bet, but if I was engaged in a prolonged kiss I would be thinking this is very kinky and erotic. If the other guy didn't seem to mind the kiss I'm sure it might soon evolve into frenching, tongue wrestling, and sucking on each others tongue. By then I'm sure I would be quite aroused, and I would be ready for anything. If others were watching and encouraging us it would even be more exciting.

Is there no respect for being an actual man these days??? Seriously ?? C'mon son , those cats are about as a straight as a broken arrow , these people are acting as if women went outta style , the homosexualization of society is in fullswing.
Cant say im surprised though , when we in north america were having a hard time getting scrambled porn on cable , in england they had all kinds of graphic sexual imagery on television and dont get me started about france, the first time i ever seen to people having sex on tv i was in england , more and more gay situations are coming on tv and at a critical time during puberty , the media is a powerful thing , tell you what though if any of those guys have girlfriends that are aware of or seen that activity they getting stolen right quick.

Um, FALSE. Same-sex affection and attraction and gay identity are not the same. Gayness is a Western concept so of course it's foreign in non-Western societies. Same-sex attraction is universal and persists in other ways beyond blatant identity assertion. I am tired of this Amero-Eurocentric bullshit.

either your two points are exactly the same or the latter one is slightly offensive.
I've heard of non-Western men who would be assumed "straight" in the West engage in oral intercourse with one another. Japanese culture supports marriage as a purely economic union while both the man and woman in the marriage can seek sexual companionship with whoever they want outside, regardless of sex. Sexual identity is a Western construct that isn't compatible with other cultures. We have to stop trying to view relations in other cultures through our self-aggrandized lens.

it's gay. that's gay, or at the very least, bi.

because there's no such thing as "gay" activity. gayness is a form of identity and being, and when it's applied to just label activity, it is always derogative. that is the only connotation it can have.
what's the point of maintaining this straight-gay divide, anyways? did you see the other article on here about mostly straightness? the whole point of both these articles is that these labels don't work and never really have. it just isolates difference and makes people feel subhuman for things beyond their control, and things that don't harm anyone.

My grandfather was a welshman son of a coal miner, a pilot during WW2, and such an intimidating man that he was referred to as 'Fearless'.
But despite all this, like an englishman, he would kiss everybody on the lips. Man, woman, child, dog, etc. Saying hello or goodbye. He was an old man, of course, when I witnessed this. But he'd apparently always been like that.
It wasn't about sexuality. It, in a way, was about respect. And mutual comfort with one another. Platonic affection. The two dudes in the picture above, however, are not locked in a kiss of "mutual comfort and platonic affection". They're gay. But probably still comfortable.
Although I do not kiss dudes, I recognize that not all dude kisses are sexual (or more specifically, homosexual).

Don't some families kiss each other on the lips? At least that's what I remember from Full House episodes...
My point is that kissing on the mouth is not necessarily sexual. Many European cultures say hi by a kiss on two cheeks. They express affection by a kiss on the lips. Not really that new or startling, to be honest.
