Chomsky's analyses are always interesting. What I would like to see is a Chomskyan alternative foreign policy blueprint which, while preserving American civil liberties and economic opportunity, includes planning for the legitimate defense of the U.S. but which does not necessitate the occupation of foreign lands, the exploitation of the poor worldwide, or the denial of sovereignty to other nations. I suspect that, were the U.S. to change course away from the existing policies Chomsky outlines, the greatest protests would come from within America, because such a change in course would require material sacrifice Americans do not wish to make.
Suspecting this to be the case, I wonder who Chomsky's real audience is. It is likely that, if he is correct, Americans have willingly chosen the path of empire and are unrepentant. Not even the much-reviled American electorate is stupid enough to believe the propaganda that has been produced to justify imperial belligerence. Therefore, is Chomsky in effect doing no more than inciting foreign nations against the U.S.? If so, what end does he hope to achieve: the end of America's ability to provide for itself? Would he prefer to see the U.S. placed at a strategic disadvantage with regard to China?
In short, Professor Chomsky is right, but so what? I like my computer, my freezer is full of meat, and the heat feels good in the winter.
