While part of what you say is true, the central point of Ian's "rant" is still valid: These heinous acts are more likely to have taken place because of religion rather than in spite of it simply because the central point of nearly every religion is the fact that you're supposed to take it on faith, without evidence to support it and often in spite of the evidence against it. Blind faith is made the highest virtue and anyone who dose not share that faith is less than those who do share it clearing the conscience of any person of faith who wishes to cause those without harm. Religion is a touchy subject. If your religion was based around "the sky is blue.", and you believed it religiously, and knew it plain as day, you would defend that idea with your life.
Every Sunday you're taught to believe that the sky is blue. You get involved more into the community, and you like the feeling it gives you, you feel loved, and important.

Now, you're friends at work/school, out side of work, they all think the Sky is clear.
