USS George Washington Stirs Yellow Waters For China

Analysis: US carrier visit a dilemma for China

BEIJING – This weekend's arrival of a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Yellow Sea poses a dilemma for Beijing: Should it protest angrily and aggravate ties with Washington, or quietly accept the presence of a key symbol of American military pre-eminence off Chinese shores?
The USS George Washington, accompanied by escort ships, is to take part in military drills with South Korea following North Korea's shelling of a South Korean island Tuesday that was one of the most serious confrontations since the Korean War a half-century ago.
It's a scenario China has sought to prevent. Only four months ago, Chinese officials and military officers shrilly warned Washington against sending a carrier into the Yellow Sea for an earlier set of exercises. Some said it would escalate tensions after the sinking of a South Korean navy ship blamed on North Korea. Others went further, calling the carrier deployment a threat to Chinese security.
Beijing believes its objections worked. Although Washington never said why, no aircraft carrier sailed into the strategic Yellow Sea, which laps at several Chinese provinces and the Korean peninsula.
This time around, with outrage high over the shelling, the U.S. raising pressure on China to rein in wayward ally North Korea, and a Chinese-American summit in the works, the warship is coming, and Beijing is muffling any criticisms.

      p.s. +^d ( voted up )
      - it SHOULDN'T need to be,....but in THIS world,...if it could be done at all, IT WOULD BE.

( you ABSOLUTELY would be sending your children to Crete as a sacrifice to Minos,...every year,....to pay the price of "peace". )

war is an industry that needs conditions to perpetuate itself. once a motive for war, the means for war, and the participants in war are removed, guess what? no war! Obviously it would take motivation for something ELSE (prosperity, fulfillment, creative expression), means for peace (necessary resources, education facilities...), and participants in a whole other industry.

people should work to minimize/eliminate these 3 conditions, preferably by boycotting, divesting, and sanctioning from all nations that go to war for the sake of peace. war always ends in diplomacy. why not skip the war entirely?

War always ends in "diplomacy" briefly,....only because NO ONE has ever conquered EVERYONE ! Seriously. There was a Roman "Peace",...of sorts,...after ROMAN VICTORY,...and not much "diplomacy',...really, with the defeated. NOW the UN-defeated,...those beyond your reach,....or strong, OR BOTH,....THAT is another matter.

We are an asshole hierarchical monkey,....at least enough of us,...TO THE BONE,...that WAR is FOREVER.

Priest to Conan,...as he heads off to sea,..." Mighty Mitra, When will this reign of blood cease"?!?

Conan "Not so long as the race lasts".

p.s. - this should not be taken to mean that I do not believe there is a "military industrial complex" that is a nest of parasitic vipers nestled closely against the bosom of America,...that may yet kill us all,....but they are not "the cause".

      Just to be clear.

Pax Romana meant peace as long as you recognized Rome as the Authority, and were taxed accordingly. Today, we have the same thing, albeit under another government whose sights are on the globe in its entirety. Without war, no would would look to them as an authority/mediator.

And what do you see "the cause" to be? Years ago, we went into Afghanistan to take out Taliban as they were supposedly hiding Osama. Today, we are entering into diplomacy with them. What was the point of the war? Did it get bin laden? did it disrupt al-qaeda terrorist networks? did we depose the taliban, or set up a friendly government, or take out opium fields...? What was the point of this war, and what did it achieve?

That is the sort of thing that laser point defense technology is developed to engage.
( this SORT of thing )
WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. --- White Sands Missile Range is testing a new weapon system known as the Laser Centurion Demonstrator.

The system, developed by Raytheon, combines proven radar and threat-detection technology with the latest in laser weapons. This demonstration model is intended to prove the capabilities and effectiveness of the new laser weapon as part of the Laser Area Defense Systems program, officials said.

The new laser system is designed to replace the 20mm cannon on the Navy's Phalanx system and the Army's Centurion system, according to Raytheon's Web site.

The integration of an advanced directed energy weapon into an existing conventional weapon system helps keep the system's costs down as well as allowing an easier transition from one system to another, officials said.

The Phalanx is an air and missile-defense system used on nearly every ship in the fleet. Converted to be transported and fired from a trailer, it is also used by the Army under the name Centurion to provide defense from air and missile threats as well as defense against mortar and artillery attacks. As an upgrade to the Phalanx and Centurion, the laser system is a program that is jointly funded by the Navy and Army. Other services are also interested in the laser itself for possible integration into other weapon systems.

"Directed energy is getting more and more prevalent in weapon systems," said Col. Bruce Lewis, White Sands Test Center commander.

Initial tests with the demonstrator have been positive. The laser has proven capable of rapidly penetrating armor plating even when not at full power, and system setup has been very easy.

Well,..."we" ( normal folks not spies ) don't know how far along that missile system really is , and how far along missile defenses have developed, and NO ONE is going to tell,...US.

One thing is certain,....someone sinks an American Carrier by ANY means,....and the world is at war. Pretty much.

Maybe we even survive it ,.....HUZZAH !!!

Paul Krugman is a defunct economist, and a crack-pot maniac. If World war does break out, hopefully they'll send Paul krugman and his Pillsbury dough boy ass to the front lines.

    • The script for war is continuing to be played out, as I have predicted. The South Koreans are pretty pissed that their government has not yet retaliated as of today. How much more can the Koreans take after one of their ships was sunk and 46 sailors died in that attack months ago. This whole episode may give China the break from North Korea and it's totalitarian Government. Too the Chinese North Korea has become an embarrassment. On the other hand, giving up North Korea in a fair exchange for Taiwan, the Chinese have long wanted it back into to their control. What will spark a U.S. intervention? Possible attack on a U.S. war ship? We have treaty's of defense in both country's, could this be the beginning of a world wide war?

I fully believe the assorted numerous incidents/nuances of this boil down to a tit for tat LONG TERM North Korea/ Taiwan geopolitical trade off between the United States and China.

And I agree that balance could VERY WELL break down. +^d

Yep, and around the world tensions remain at high levels, in fact a war in the Korean peninsula may well be a green light for Israel to do what they want with Iran and a soon a spiral of war escalates with other country's and their needs for the last remaining drops of oil!

    • This might be a bit more impressive to the North Korean mind:
A Pentagon Briefing: Rear Admiral Watsisname answering final questions.
Reporter: “Admiral, isn’t this another example of old style twentieth century gun boat diplomacy”
Admiral: Smiles, chuckles a bit, then responds, “Well we have far more then just gun boats involved in these war games.”
Reporter: “Far more Admiral, can you elaborate?”
Admiral: “Nope! We like to keep everybody guessing. Then again, when it comes to listening to what we are saying, the North may be def, or they may try another con, I mean this is recent incident number two.”
      Reporters: “Admiral…Admiral…”
      Admiral: “No further questions.” Wink!
