Sarah Palin’s Revealing Response to Facebook ‘F*ggot’ Rant

Mostly missed, in an hourlong interview with Sean Hannity that produced buzzworthy soundbites about Katie Couric and Dancing with the Stars, was former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s unprompted response to the uproar surrounding daughter Willow’s recent Facebook misadventure.

While Palin correctly points out that the national media should not have exploited the musings of a 16 year-old, the balance of her response reveals important things about Sarah Palin, not as a parent, but as a media critic and human being. Not only does she undermine her claims of media “lies” by making stuff up herself, she also displays a disturbing attitude about the use of the word “faggot.”

Palin is absolutely correct that the children of politicians ought to be off-limits to the media, or at least, that there ought to be a high bar set for newsworthiness. Similarly, Palin’s skill as a parent should not be considered fair game. Neither subject has any relevance to Palin’s career as a politician, or as a media figure, and decency dictates that they remain private.

What is relevant, though, is how Palin chose to respond to the incident. Here’s the clip of Palin’s interview with Sean Hannity, including the completely unrelated question that Hannity asked her: (from Fox News Channel)

Here’s a transcript of the relevant portion:

People probably think that my greatest frustration is the lies that are told in the tabloids and on hateful blogs full of anonymous sources about my family … and there are constant everyday lies that we have to read that are out there in the public. But my family and I…thick skin…we can take it, you know…we can take what the haters say despite the fact that there’s injustice in the situation.

I mean, look at the other day. Willow, finally, my 16 year old, she had had it up to here with somebody saying very, very hateful things about the family and saying mean things about her little brother Trig, and Willow finally responded and she used a bad word when she responded in defense of her family. And her response became national news, even hard news copy it turned into, so that’s ridiculous and I had to explain to her, “Willow, there is no justice here but you have to just zip your lip and let’s move forward.”

Perhaps most glaring is the fact that, in an interview in which she promises to restore journalism, Palin gets her facts wrong. The exchange to which she refers contains nary a mention of Trig Palin, and was touched off by a single negative comment about Palin’s reality show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. Palin would have been perfectly justified had she chosen not to get into the details of the story, but since she did, she ought to have described them accurately.

More disturbing, though, is Palin’s complete dismissal of the use of the slur “faggot.” From her response, it’s not even clear that she identifies it as a “bad word,” since the conversation she references contains a barrage of obscenities. In any case, she clearly felt that the use of the word (or words) was justified, and that the only “injustice” was that anyone objected to it.

This is consistent with the Sarah Palin who defended Dr. Laura Schlessinger over her use of the “N-word,” but not so much with the Palin who demanded Rahm Emanuel’s firing over his private use of the word “retard.” Perhaps this would be a different story if Palin had a “faggot” child of her own, or even a “normal” child who couldn’t live with the stigma that society still attaches to the label.

That’s really the crux of the problem with Palin. Many liberals would probably use these seeming contradictions to charge Palin with hypocrisy, a clichéd, overused accusation that misses the real takeaway. Palin is not a hypocrite. She obviously believes that certain groups are worthy of sensitivity, and is entirely consistent in extending that worthiness only to those folks she can see from her own house.

    • WHY should they be off limits, when she's pretending she is good role model. WE should be savvy to all the going on's on their household? Is she ashamed YET? if she aint' ashamed of having her daughter as a UNWED mother, what could shame her. HER lack of SUPERIORITY of her lack their of.       do you really feel that way? really? laws amighty its scary to me the lengths people will go to in order to show their allegiance to one side or the other, as if their position was so fragile that any sign of weakness, any move that isnt a thrust forward against the 'other' side, could cause the whole deck of cards to come tumblin down.

    • sarah palins kid called someone a faggot on the web. Sarah was asked about it, said she told the kid she was wrong for using a bad word, but also to not take to heart all the media and public outcry that would (and did) inevitably take place because she is sarah palins daughter and for no other reason.

      where is the story here? are people really so small minded as they will demonize palin and everything she and her family do regardless of the scale, the facts, or even common sense? i dont want her in government. i dont agree with a lot of her position on a lot of things, and i hate homophobia. so freaking what. kids say dumb shit. sarah corrected her, and also explained why it was freaking front page news when she did it and not when 4 million other kids act poorly. please get over it people, sheesh.

      the problem is she's out there telling people how to act and she can't even handle her own kids. one's a teen mom, who's now out preaching abstinence (ok bristol, now that you've had your fun everybody else should abstain) who kept her ex from his family (first sign of an abusive attachment style is someone trying to separate another from friends and family), and one is only sixteen but somehow a raging racist. a racist w/ a mother who clearly has no idea about what she's doing online. sorry dude, but you have to lead by example or shut the fuck up. sarah palin is a mess and there's a grip of people in this country who would vote for her, which is a bigger threat to national security than a lot of issues that people fixate on.

      as much as i love rapping on the palin haters, i dread the thought that anyone who has an opposable thumb would vote for this woman for anything higher than the board of a condo or something. kudos to her for seeing a wrong in her state and participating in the system to try and correct it, but sheesh please don't run for anything. ever.

      Not if you have your privacy settings set correctly. My Facebook account under my real name doesn't even show up in an extensive internet search, and neither do my comments or postings.

      And besides, I maintain that anyone who is trolling the Palin's Twitters and Facebook accounts looking for something to make a headline with should really get a life.

      Again, I'm not for using harsh language towards anyone, homos or hetros, and I try and be as courteous as I can to people in real life and online, but we're talking about common gutter language used by kids all across the US.

      So really, at the end of the day, who cares what some 16 year old kid says on Facebook? Nobody but a bunch of whiners who seem to hate that 16 year old kids mother.

      As long as the conservatives don't object, she will continue to hold him up to deflect criticism that had nothing to do with him, and replace that criticism with sympathy.

      Playing the victim is the most used trick in Sarah's bag. God forbid she becomes president and uses this tactic on the international stage. She may use Trig as an excuse to stir things up in the larger world.

    • people who condone the use of the word faggot or nigger are ignorant people period. Those words are demeaning descriptions that hold no value in using the english language, they only insult. Sarah Palin claims parenting as off limits? If you cannot gain a handle on your family issues you most certainly cannot deal with national or international issues with much higher consequenses, so parenting CAN BE an issue. It shows a decision making process in the nuclear family and how one chooses to deal with the tough problems every family faces.
      But in the end Sarah Palin is woefully not qualified to be President, Senator, congresswoman or for that matter she should have never been Gov. of Alaska.
      She has exemplified through her own statements and actions how unqualified she is.

If she wants a talk show....I might even watch it....but she has higher goals....and that is scary!!!       I'm not sure if I would qualify what Palin has as being charismatic. Perhaps a sex appeal that is rare in political figures in our nation, but I think that for someone to be charismatic one has to be well spoken and also be able to reach out to reach out successfully to different people. She pretty much just reaches out to her own political base, and even then, I knew a lot of people in 2008 who were of her political base who only liked her because they thought she was hot, not because her political beliefs or how she communicated.

      Actually modern politics has shown us that those who aren't smart tend to get pretty far, remember W? All you have to do is be a figurehead and say what your handlers tell you to. It's obvious Palin doesn't know anything about foreign relations, or geography or even the average American, but all she has to do is say really polar things that people respond to emotionally. A lot of people are as ignorant as Palin and so they identify with that. They just have to convince themselves that she represents proper morals so they don't have to think, same as with Bush
