This urgent call-to-action video by the Health Ranger calls upon grassroots food freedom supporters to call their U.S. Senators on Monday, November 29, 2010, to oppose S.510.

Video Keywords: food safety,food supply, Senate,S 510,Senate Bill 510,food freedom,health freedom,tyranny,FDA,Big Government,agriculture,legislation,raw milk,America

510:FDA Food Safety Modernization Act
A bill to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to the safety of the food supply.
This bill was considered in committee which has recommended it be considered by the Senate as a whole. Although it has been placed on a calendar of business, the order in which legislation is considered and voted on is determined by the majority party leadership. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned.

If this atrocious bill is passed don’t expect to see SWAT teams waiting outside every organic farm waiting to toss a flash-bang grenade. Modern tyranny most often comes first in the form of a suit knocking at your door and demanding to see your licenses and documentation. And that is precisely what this bill outlines. Exhaustive records must be kept for anyone producing food, which will place growing, production and sale of food outside the reach of the average small time operation. Just think back to the Oregon Lemonade stand that was shut down by Health Inspectors.

The restraints placed on local farms, food co-ops and farmers markets will destroy whats left of independent agriculture. A wise move in the midst of the Great Recession. Without the freedom to strive for self sufficiency, a god given right endowed to all creatures, we are left only one option. Dependence. The forced symbiosis to factory farms, process plants and the GMO mafia, without so much as the freedom to store and save seeds.

Scale Appropriate
In addition to the focus on facilities that manufactures, processes, packs, or holds food for sale farmers who supply the nation with fresh produce would also be subject to a number of new regulations and recommended practices. The new rules haven’t been written yet, but are expected to focus on water quality, employee hygiene, the use of manure and compost as fertilizer and wildlife intrusions.

Because farmers across the nation have warned against punitive rules and many feel they are already taking extreme steps to make sure their food was safe, FDA officials and bill supporters have professed their commitment to ensuring that the final bill is “scale-appropriate.”S. 510:FDA Food Safety Modernization Act

    • Just another new song with the same story. Yes it's horrible it happened but look up dupont in association with the gov. pat.s and copyrights. controlling Beans, even if you keep the seeds for the next year, they won't grow, they're a hybrid/sterile sort of only producing for 1 season. but if they spread to another farmers field, that doesn't use those seeds, then that farmers crop is doomed as well, and there's nothing anyone can do about it, this stuff has been going on for a long time. Hey, it's all about control. and it sucks.

    • I've just perused the bill. Maybe I'm reading it incorrectly but what's notable are the sections that were "struck out". I assume that means not included in the final bill. If interested I would recommend taking a look at it. After the strike outs it seems mainly aimed at imported food and big agri-conglomerates although "audits" appear to include all farmers. But hey, I'm no lawyer so read it yourself.

      http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s111-510

You have to remember this bill is aimed at ALL farmers, including the big ones who hate regulatory oversight.

I read op's comment and watched the video and there were no specific details on why the bill was bad. I'm not saying it's a good bill but would like to know the details of why it's a bad bill so I don't sound ignorant when/if I get questions about it.

My goal was to see how many people actually know about the future of growing your own food. This is not a test. Here in New Mexico our seed banks are now being moved to another location for further study and research for sustainability. I will be doing a short film on this come Jan 2011. I know you think I don' tread or follow my post very well. I have been doing do diligence. The source of my report coming this Next year, will be on my new show Gaia Tv LIVE. I will also post here for you and your advocates of banter and demise. As I am sure a few of the Current masters have passed judgment on us Native folks as not educated and also still not as modern as I have read some of the post. Your skill is ill. And wow what punctuation and passion! See ya in the headlines keep the fire going I am learning so much about our world and confriming things I knew was coming! Peace to all and have a #^@%*^@%$@ great day ;-)

      http://maplight.org/us-congress/bill/111-s-510/360488/total-contributions
      $9,188,958 in support versus $2,205,195

For the latest version of this bill (updated, full text): http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s111-510

"In an interview with CFH’s James Gormley, here’s what health-freedom attorney Jonathan Emord said about what’s wrong with S. 510:

'The major problem with the bill is that it fails to recognize, let alone protect against, abuses that are common in the inspection process. Moreover, it creates a financial incentive for FDA to perform repeat inspections of facilities as a revenue-raising measure or as a means to penalize financially a company disfavored by the agency. The notion that expanding FDA inspection authority will somehow arrest instances of adulteration is absurd. FDA inspects after complaints are made, not before, and FDA inspections are rarely the means by which the market acts to protect consumers from harm. Most often the company itself acts to reduce the risk of product liability, and the media seizes upon the information and broadcasts it widely. At a time when the nation can ill afford imposition of yet another tax on companies that make essential products, this Congress in its ‘infinite wisdom’ is doing precisely that. S. 510 is a bad idea that will not work to stop adulteration but will enable the FDA to abuse its power and may well drive some good firms out of existence.' "

For more on what the bill says and what our concern is go to:

Anyone who reads this bill will see it is a disaster and is favoring big companies like Monsanto. It is just another step taken by the government to ensure the FDA reigns supreme in matters of our food supply. Meanwhile, the FDA is approving frankenfish and cloned meat as natural healthy substitutes.

How is organic food being taken away? This bill just gives the FDA recall and inspection authority and EXEMPTS ALL SMALL FARMS.

You food wackos are strange. I've never seen any group (neo-cons included) use more hyperbole and misinformation. The crappy thing is that you're fighting for a good cause but you're such weirdos about it that it turns people like me, who would ordinarily be all for good food reforms, against you.

The agribusiness lobby is indeed fighting the Tester-Hagan Amendment to this bill which would exempt small farmers from much of the regulatory and monetary burden this bill in its original state would place them under. And it is also a fact that the majority of food borne illnesses have come from CAFOS, not small local farmers. Now it would seem to me that the reason why Agribusiness is fighting this amendment is because they do see a future in which many small farms will be so bogged down in regulatory fees and paperwork that it will bury them. There is no disputing that companies like Monsanto, Cargill, Tyson, and other agribusiness companies are making moves to patent seeds, land grab, and lay claim to the food system. Is this bill an attempt to outlaw organic food right down to gardening? Well, not explicity in the language. However, the intent involved in the framework regarding excessive fees, licenses, inspections, etc. in relation to the loopholes agribusiness enjoys is not in a balance that would make one believe this is not a consideration on their part. Anyone concerned about this should then contact their Senators in support of the Tester-Hagan Amendment to exempt these small farms from rules which would eventually break them but which will not bring any undue burden on the large conglomerates that can afford them while getting away with continuing to place our food supply in jeopardy through filthy CAFOS and lack of regulation through loopholes.

Eating boxed food is like eating cardboard, there's no nutrition! you can only get too much vitamin A from over-supplementing, it's pretty impossible to get too much from diet alone. People need to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables so they get all the vitamins, minerals, and, really important, phyto nutrients that make metabolism happen. Why do you think so many people feel tired and sick all the time? It's because their bodies aren't getting what they need. I don't advocate supplements, I think people should just eat vegetables like they're supposed to and learn to cook like adults.
Oh, and "health gurus" aren't the only ones who base everything on isolated studies, that's pretty much what the whole processed food industry does whenever they come up a new food additive. And what are you talking about doctors have to clean up the mess left by health food? How do they remedy that? With lean cuisine? I don't think anyone is getting sick from kelp, how about some evidence? What about the millions developing diabetes and high blood pressure?

I am looking into all quotes and responses. To confirm the real scare of Organic preservation. I want to grow natural gardens with out fall out of law or humans who live in the city with out noticing massive changes in seasons and weather patterns. Rain is only one by-product from our progressive lifestyles. Please note I will be looking deeper into a brighter future for all. I get that, but if you invest in a crock pot and a rice cooker all you have to do is throw some beans in in the morning, turn it on, then you have food ready in the evening. Rice takes like half an hour in the rice cooker and its the same deal. See, easy solution, but it doesn't get a lot of attention, you don't see any bean commercials on TV. If you eat beans and brown rice together you get all the protein you need, and it's like 20 bucks for 50 pounds of beans!

    • I have been watching the news on this and there are many solid views on this issue. Well I am not sure when mass media will publish the news till they have it in place! I understand most do not want to see this type of news or give them a chance to be upset with one simple humans questions on reality. If you must bark louder at my source or news that may not be pleasant well. join the club that is what I thought current was a place of thoughts and interesting views. Well there is just one place where this will be a game of cat and mouse.

    • Man, this shit is old, quit being lazy about your fear mongering and find something new. I don't agree with every part of the bill, but if it were passed what is described above would not happen.

    • No worries. This is so much bull shit. Natural News is not a reliable source. Organic food will continue to be available.

There may be problems w/ Senate Bill 510, but this article is nothing but a hyperbolic scare tactic from a thoroughly discredited source.

    • Dear Mr. House:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about S.510, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act.
This legislation would give the FDA new authority and resources to address the food safety issues in our country. In addition, it would increase the frequency of inspections in all food facilities, and would allow the FDA to recall dangerous food products if a company fails to recall a product at the FDA’s request.
I appreciate hearing your views on this legislation. While improving our food traceability system is a high priority for me, I have concerns about creating new and un-called for requirements for farmers. As food safety legislation continues to be discussed in Congress, I will work to ensure that our farm sector is protected, and that Americans do not have to worry about the safety of the food on their dinner tables.
Should S.510 come before the Senate for consideration, I will certainly keep your views in mind. Thank you for getting in touch with me.
      Sincerely,

      Sherrod Brown
      United States Senator

    • This couldn't happen. Maybe I'm in denial, but I live in Florida and I don't see how the federal government would have the capacity to shutdown farms and shops that everyone, including local representatives, enjoy. Not only that, controlling seeds... If anyone really attempted to enforce these insane policies, it would either be one of many reasons to spark a revolt or occur in the midst of a total collapse. I'm not ruling out the possibility of a collapse occurring in the next few months.. Actually, I am counting on it happening. Tick-Tock.

They're already shutting down farms all over the US. It's already happening. Food Co-ops and Raw Milk producers are being shut down all the time. They keep it nice and quiet, too.

They don't need to shut all the little ones down all they need to do is put the beaurcratic squeeze on the big distributors like trader joe's or whole foods and ruin the market. THat would put a huge dent in the availability at least. This whole thing is really fucked up.

You must be new to Florida. See: Citrus Canker about 10 years ago. The government literally came and ripped out/ran through a chopper pretty much everyone in south florida's citrus trees for a cosmetic blemish. Think about how they'd act for something that supposedly is under the guise of keeping you healthy?

Citrus trees were one of the high prized possessions of south floridians and while it got a lot of people very pissed off, no revolution happened then.
