"We send these young people into combat," said McCain. "We think they're mature enough to fight and die. I think they're mature enough to make a judgment on who they want to serve with and the impact on their battle effectiveness."

McCain, a four-term Republican and former Navy pilot who endured a harrowing ordeal as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, has taken a higher profile on socially divisive issues since losing the 2008 presidential race to Barack Obama. He has even differed with his wife, Cindy, who in a recent online video opposed the military policy and accused the government of treating gays like "second-class citizens."

    • It seems that McCain does not realise, or simply does not care, that history will record him as a bigot who was completely out of touch with what is just and equitable.

      I liken him to the school administrators who stood proudly cloaked in ignorance and intolerance at the gates attempting to prevent American 'coloured' children from entering their schools and the end of desegregation. They too believed, for whatever reason, that they were doing what was best, even though common sense and decency clearly states otherwise.

      It never ceases to amaze me that people like McCain still exist.

    • i am sorry but mccain needs to stfu already. he has backtracked and twisted and turned so many ways on this issue, i am sorry dude but anyone who opposes this lifting of dadt is a freaking dope. its simply stupid. i hate to make generalizations and blanket statements but anyone who thinks that dadt is ok is a dinosaur and a moron blinded by either religion that they are misinterpreting, fear, peer pressure or all of the above. get over it. love is love. sexual preferences have as little to do with , military qualifications as whether you wipe front to back or back to front, and are just as private and personal an issue. wtf does who i am attracted to have to do with whether i can serve. it isnt like being around men all day makes anyone, man woman or child, go sex mad and lose all control ffs.

      gtfo of here mccain and all you old bigoted hypocritical dividers. this is our world now, the time for humankind to join as one in acceptance and common sense.

    • we so missed a bullet with him running for pres.
      just like bush, maccain is more of the same.
      that same kind of self rightious arrogance that allows a man to state publicly, what a study determined to be true is false, based on personal opinion.

      so glad hes not the pres.or we would be balls deep in irans ass, cuz mccain despite no study validating it, knew we should invade.

      He completely lost it after the Palin debacle. But then again this is the man who had an adulterous affair with a younger woman from a wealth, powerful family for whom he divorced his crippled wife to marry. Like most powerful republicans he is a hypocritical asshole.

      honestly we dont have to deride him on any other issue, especially ones that are kinda unproven, when he flat out gives us the perfect thing to attack and then dismiss him on, being a doddering old fool and a hypocrite. just because he is a moron on this issue doesnt make every other repub or conserv an idiot, but i truly believe that anyone who is against lifting dadt is a freaking moron that needs to seriously get out of the way of progress and world acceptance of each other as humans regardless of whom anyone likes to bed or is attracted to.
