Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former North Carolina senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was 61.

Edwards, an attorney, author and health care advocate, died Tuesday morning in her Chapel Hill home surrounded by family.

"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family. We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life," her family said in a statement.

"On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."

Edwards was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. In 2007 she announced the disease had spread to her ribs and hips, saying it was incurable but treatable.

On Monday, Edwards released a statement saying she had stopped treatment after doctors told her additional treatment would be "unproductive."

Her last book, "Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life's Adversities," went on sale in June.

    • That poor woman. You really can't help but to feel terrible; she's dying of cancer and her husband go fucks some other lady, then the chick poses half naked in front of their child's stuffed animals to milk up the fame (not that the kid is at fault, she's completely innocent in all this).

      Goodnight, sweet princess.

    • A true warrior has died, and we all will have to pick up where she left off! Nobody of a right mind wants too die, and those who chose to fight as she did and above all, fight for those at the same time that have no platform is truly remarkable. She has always reminded me of mother who also died of cancer working everyday up until the final two weeks of her life. If you can not be inspired by this woman's life, then you are not human. My belief in reincarnation gives me some relief of where I believe she has gone, a few tears of course but a celebration of a well lived life! We shall meet again Elizabeth.......

    • Quote from Mrs. Edwards earlier this year on her latest book 'Resilience'

"Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good".

    • Oh my, how very sad. But at least she died with her loved ones around her. My prayers are with her children as I know from experience how very hard it is to lose a mother to cancer. May they find solace in her love and memory.
