New data revealed on Thursday shows that Vermont state government spends more than $700,000 annually to pursue Vermonters for possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Based on the new findings, state Rep. Jason Lorber (D-Burlington) announced plans Thursday to introduce a bill that would decriminalize the possession of less than one ounce of cannabis.

    • Wow...That sets a good example. Oh its costing us 700k a year to persue people breaking the law....I have a BRILLIANT idea lets just make it legal only to a degree, yeah thats it..Yay me....What next? It is costing us 500k a year to catch and detain drunk drivers..Well lets just bump up the blood alcohol legal limit, that will solve that.

Face it people..laws are laws..Here's a news flash..It wouldn't cost VT 700k a year to persue people with marijuana (even little amounts) if they just would stop breaking the law to begin with.

    • this is why we loose the "war on drugs"..LOL

what the state of vermont should do is make all those found with DOPE to clean highways, parks, and such..saving money in return and making these dope fiends know the meaning of "hard work"..

    • With a failing education system that pays poorly and does seek the best and brightest with adequate funding and outreach, it's pathetic that we waste money on the crime of owning a plant. We've got bigger problems, as if pot even were a problem to begin with. Fight drug ABUSE through investing in education, not prison.
