Is this really that different from developed countries?
Let say I want to put a hot-tub on my deck at my house that I own... First, I have to go to the city to get a permit to install this new equipment. That requires a fee. Then, according to the permit, I have to get an electrician to look at my current electrical panel and an engineer to evaluate my deck's strength. They both get paid. Then, once all this is done I can put the hottub in, but why can't I do that stuff myself? If my house burns down or my deck collapses it is my loss.
Lets take another matter, civil court. Somebody rendered services and I wasn't satisfied, so I took them to small claims court. In order to get my case heard, I have to pay a fee to the clerk.
How about another example. I'm speeding down the road, and a police officer pulls me over. He gives me a ticket, which I then have to go pay or argue against in a court. Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper for everyone involved if I just paid the officer directly?
Take another example, taxes. Lets say I don't want to go to jail or have my wages garnished. I therefore have to pay my taxes to the IRS. I don't get to decide how much I pay or what the money is spent on, so what is the difference?
Again, I ask, "How is all government not bribery?" The only difference in the developed world is that they are called "fees" or "taxes", they are written down somewhere, and they only go to a person indirectly through the government payrol. This really just makes the whole system bigger, less efficient, more expensive, and a big conspiracy that makes our society weak (i.e. nobody can do anything for themselves anymore).

Because in India, on top of the fee, you pay a bribe.
Or, you pay a bribe that goes directly into someone's pocket in order to not have to pay a fee to the system.

Yay corruption. Whos surprised, go ahead raise your hands, get em up there real high. Now boys and girls all those people with their hands raised are dumb. Remember try not to hate them, they just didn't pay as much attention in school.

My uncle, who travels frequently for his work, was talking about his fact recently. In some parts of the world, like India, you are expected to pay a "premium" for things to get done on time or in a certain way. Bribery is not simply aberrant corruption directed at those in high places, but a fact of everyday life for the poor as well. It's staggering to think about how much income is siphoned out of the legitimate economy in this way, especially when it disproportionally effects those with less income.

These people are really poor, most of them can't even afford to eat and feed their families, most of them are beneath the world's definition of poor by so many levels.
Now of course i am not defending anyone and of course bribery is wrong, but how are they going to manage to keep on living if they can't even eat or feed their own kids? that is why they take bribes, just to be able to survive.
I wouldn't focus on those poor people that are trying to take what will make them barely survive when there are greedy millionaires and businessmen who keep on taking bribes just to grow their wealth.
as a matter of fact if they even steal i wouldn't blame them, punish them OK in order to keep things from going chaotic, but how can i blame someone for trying to keep his own kids alive?!. - 1 year ago

You've completely missed what I was saying. Far from blaming the poor for this situation, I was lamenting the situation they find themselves in. You solve this problem by building strong infrastructure, public transportation, and transparent wage systems that both ensures people a living wage and requires all employers to provide one. When some of the necessities of life are not subject to bribes, then it removes the necessity for it in other parts of life, as well. I would also suggest strong funding for quality public education, since access to opportunity leads to less illegitimate means of trying to achieve it.

"Pharaoh and H3", bribery to public officials is condoned and expected in the developing nations. The gov't. salaries are kept low in the expectation that the employee will skim off of the top to meet his family needs. "Thats a fact jack"!

Sounds like the government is just encouraging a free-market system of income adjustment for their workers.
Let's call it what the Republicans would call it. Just keep the Government out of the way, and we can have a system like India's too.

Well, in reality the system is not that bad and still functions once you adjust your attitude to the realities of the particular economic system. I always advise U.S. and U.K. visitors not to swim upstream.
