Why I'm Posting Bail Money for Julian Assange By Michael Moore

Furthermore, I am publicly offering the assistance of my website, my servers, my domain names and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars.
We were taken to war in Iraq on a lie. Hundreds of thousands are now dead. Just imagine if the men who planned this war crime back in 2002 had had a WikiLeaks to deal with. They might not have been able to pull it off. The only reason they thought they could get away with it was because they had a guaranteed cloak of secrecy. That guarantee has now been ripped from them, and I hope they are never able to operate in secret again.
So why is WikiLeaks, after performing such an important public service, under such vicious attack? Because they have outed and embarrassed those who have covered up the truth. The assault on them has been over the top:
**Sen. Joe Lieberman says WikiLeaks "has violated the Espionage Act."
**The New Yorker's George Packer calls Assange "super-secretive, thin-skinned, [and] megalomaniacal."
**Sarah Palin claims he's "an anti-American operative with blood on his hands" whom we should pursue "with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders."
**Democrat Bob Beckel (Walter Mondale's 1984 campaign manager) said about Assange on Fox: "A dead man can't leak stuff ... there's only one way to do it: illegally shoot the son of a bitch."
**Republican Mary Matalin says "he's a psychopath, a sociopath ... He's a terrorist."
**Rep. Peter A. King calls WikiLeaks a "terrorist organization."
And indeed they are! They exist to terrorize the liars and warmongers who have brought ruin to our nation and to others. Perhaps the next war won't be so easy because the tables have been turned -- and now it's Big Brother who's being watched ... by us!
WikiLeaks deserves our thanks for shining a huge spotlight on all this. But some in the corporate-owned press have dismissed the importance of WikiLeaks ("they've released little that's new!") or have painted them as simple anarchists ("WikiLeaks just releases everything without any editorial control!"). WikiLeaks exists, in part, because the mainstream media has failed to live up to its responsibility. The corporate owners have decimated newsrooms, making it impossible for good journalists to do their job. There's no time or money anymore for investigative journalism. Simply put, investors don't want those stories exposed. They like their secrets kept ... as secrets.
I ask you to imagine how much different our world would be if WikiLeaks had existed 10 years ago. Take a look at this photo. That's Mr. Bush about to be handed a "secret" document on August 6th, 2001. Its heading read: "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US." And on those pages it said the FBI had discovered "patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings." Mr. Bush decided to ignore it and went fishing for the next four weeks.
But if that document had been leaked, how would you or I have reacted? What would Congress or the FAA have done? Was there not a greater chance that someone, somewhere would have done something if all of us knew about bin Laden's impending attack using hijacked planes?
But back then only a few people had access to that document. Because the secret was kept, a flight school instructor in San Diego who noticed that two Saudi students took no interest in takeoffs or landings, did nothing. Had he read about the bin Laden threat in the paper, might he have called the FBI? (Please read this essay by former FBI Agent Coleen Rowley, Time's 2002 co-Person of the Year, about her belief that had WikiLeaks been around in 2001, 9/11 might have been prevented.)
Or what if the public in 2003 had been able to read "secret" memos from Dick Cheney as he pressured the CIA to give him the "facts" he wanted in order to build his false case for war? If a WikiLeaks had revealed at that time that there were, in fact, no weapons of mass destruction, do you think that the war would have been launched -- or rather, wouldn't there have been calls for Cheney's arrest?
Openness, transparency -- these are among the few weapons the citizenry has to protect itself from the powerful and the corrupt. What if within days of August 4th, 1964 -- after the Pentagon had made up the lie that our ship was attacked by the North Vietnamese in the Gulf of Tonkin -- there had been a WikiLeaks to tell the American people that the whole thing was made up? I guess 58,000 of our soldiers (and 2 million Vietnamese) might be alive today.
Instead, secrets killed them.
For those of you who think it's wrong to support Julian Assange because of the sexual assault allegations he's being held for, all I ask is that you not be naive about how the government works when it decides to go after its prey. Please -- never, ever believe the "official story." And regardless of Assange's guilt or innocence (see the strange nature of the allegations here), this man has the right to have bail posted and to defend himself. I have joined with filmmakers Ken Loach and John Pilger and writer Jemima Khan in putting up the bail money -- and we hope the judge will accept this and grant his release today.
Might WikiLeaks cause some unintended harm to diplomatic negotiations and U.S. interests around the world? Perhaps. But that's the price you pay when you and your government take us into a war based on a lie. Your punishment for misbehaving is that someone has to turn on all the lights in the room so that we can see what you're up to. You simply can't be trusted. So every cable, every email you write is now fair game. Sorry, but you brought this upon yourself. No one can hide from the truth now. No one can plot the next Big Lie if they know that they might be exposed.
And that is the best thing that WikiLeaks has done. WikiLeaks, God bless them, will save lives as a result of their actions. And any of you who join me in supporting them are committing a true act of patriotism. Period.
I stand today in absentia with Julian Assange in London and I ask the judge to grant him his release. I am willing to guarantee his return to court with the bail money I have wired to said court. I will not allow this injustice to continue unchallenged.
P.S. You can read the statement I filed today in the London court here.
P.P.S. If you're reading this in London, please go support Julian Assange and WikiLeaks at a demonstration at 1 PM today, Tuesday the 14th, in front of the Westminster court.

Though I think Michael Moore is quite likely doing this as much for publicity as anything else, I can't argue with him bailing the guy out.

No, publicity is not what drives liberal minded people, no more than it drives conservative minded people. However, Michael Moore does seem to have a flair for the dramatic in his documentaries. Don't get me wrong, I liked "Sicko" and "Bowling for Columbine," but Michael Moore does pull some dirty handed stunts on occasion which seem to be just about raising his publicity. At the end of "Bowling for Columbine," Moore surprises Heston with an unscheduled interview at his own home. Heston is an old man and was probably very confused, but the way the attempted interview was set up painted an extremely one sided picture to the whole thing and in doing so was also probably one of the large reasons the film made as much money as it did.

I will have to watch it again to see what you are referring to. My memory of the flick is about guns and killings in America compared to other nations that have gun access as well.
You have to have a flare for something or no one will watch your movie; also part of his gig is bringing public attention and awareness to an apathetic population. I think anyone who tells the truth about the disparity in the American dream and what most Americans are experiencing is a hero and deserves to be celebrated.

I said this before and I'll say it again. The military information leaked by WikiLeaks is a non issue. To the best of my knowledge no one has died as a result of it. Additionally, none of the revealed information is the least bit surprising. War sucks. People murder other people in EVERY war. I'm not justifying it, just saying it's not something that surprises me. This leads me to believe that the military revelations are not the big concern.
However consider, the day before Assange stated he would be releasing information on the Bank of America,(not yet done) the Fed came clean about where all the TARP money went. They stated they did so because they were required to do so by law. However, keep in mind that Paulson and the Fed had flat out refused to reveal this information to Congress just over a year ago. The excuse that US law required them to do come clean is bullshit in light of the situation created by WikeLeaks. You know as well as I do how things go in DC. The Fed does NOTHING it doesn't want to do. What has this got to do with BoA? Everything.
BoA was one of the biggest recipients of TARP money so the process and requirements for receiving TARP money would be crystal clear for the country to see. This information package would likely have included at least some information regarding the Feds bailout of foreign banks. So rather than when for the other shoe to drop, the Fed released the information first.
Can I prove this? Nope. We'll have to wait and see what financial information gets released. However I'm a firm believer that in the BoA info release there will be revelations of corruption, fraud, theft and unbridled greed that will make everything to date pale by comparison.

Again --another meaningless ad hominem, a tactic that has become the defining characteristic of the utterly USELESS right wing in America. Do you guys go to a special school that teaches you how to shut down vast amounts of brain cells? Is there a 'stupid' school where insults and BULLSHIT are taught rather than physics, calculus, history, political theory (NOT PROPAGANDA) sociology, biology to include natural selection, molecular biology? I know for fact that the GOP conducts 'campaign schools' for prospective candidates and political consultants. I know that for a fact --I attended one of them. I know PRECISELY how Republican candidates have been taught to 'frame' opponents, how GOP candidates literally design campaigns of character assassination so that the specific characterizations and outright lies are more likely to be believed among specific demographic groups. Frankly --you are a tool and you have been used but --alas --you fell for it. ERGO: you are NOT a free man; you are, rather, a TOOL.

I should mention, however, that the American 'right-wing' in particular had absolutely NOTHING to boast about. It has verifiable record of UTTER FUCKING FAILURE. Volumes may be written of this but, in a very short post here I will have to leave it at this: EVERY Democratic regime in America has presided over much greater GDP growth and JOB CREATION that has ANY GOP regime at least since World War II. My source for that are several Federal agencie: the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Breau, the U.S. Commerce Dept -B.E.A. et al. I will admit that I have not yet researched the stats for IDIOTS like Calvin Coolidge, Warren Harding or Herbert Hoover. But as GOP policies and its easily documented COLLUSION with the BIG BANKSTERS was most certainly a prime cause of the Great Depression as were the same practices more recently under the utterly failed and corrupt regime of George W. Bush.

Gov: "There is no one behind the curtain. Hey over hear (jumps frantically) "America against rapists" all eyes on rape, hide your kids hide you wife, we going find you Assange."
Doe: "No really! I'm sure the real rapist is behind this curtain. I can see him hiding behind all the lies, fallacies, and holes in the material."
Gov: "Yea we're working on a new curtain. The old one just gives the illusion that we're raping rights around the world in your name..uh just close your eyes for now. It will pass, oh look something glittered in show-biz world."

I can take down the Assange poster that I have been masturbating too all day.
Utopia 3000, I never called Assange an angel, but I don't believe that he is a serial rapist either; at least not with the evidence that has been provided thus far. I can say with certainty that this coverage is being used to demonize Assange in the eyes of the public so that they will disregard the material that's being released by wikileaks.
You don't call the government angelic, but your comment infers that the Government has nothing to do with this fiasco. I disagree with that point. The U.S. government and their drones have been coming down so hard on Assange for the material his site released. Do you really want to make this an example of how everything is not one vast conspiracy? I agree with you just not in this instance. The U.S. has pulled sneakier cards and this smells like one of them.

thank you for saying this you are so right and while he deserves his day in court, that is what he is getting, so people need to take his 'status' and their cheerleading out of the equation and lets determine if there were rapes here

Of course not- you don't want someone who weighs the evidence honestly and fairly. You want a unilateral decision to free a man you decided to idolize because of his professional life without knowing who he is as a man.

Whatever happened to being innocent until proven guilty?
It's there, and it's great! IN COURT.
Whatever happened to actually weighing the evidence and being able to think for yourself as a human being?
THAT'S GREAT TOO!OJ Simpson was cleared of all charges most people seem to believe he was guilty of killing two people.
Money is more important than justice nowadays.
So, if we are in a tabloid world now and sex seems to be the only thing that matters, besides money of course; it seems you picked money over sex.
I pick actually finding out what really happened and judging him by that in a court of law.
Sound good to you?

Micheal Moore is a national treasure and a true patriot..He will be severely attacked by the unpatriotic, pathetic, power hungry,Right-Wingers, for making this courageous stand..Micheal More has the support of millions of people around the globe, who are hungry for the truth..God bless Micheal Moore. I hope not, but I am sure that his life is in danger..

Openness, transparency -- these are among the few weapons the citizenry has to protect itself from the powerful and the corrupt.
This is my fav quote....I love this message, too. Its right on the mark.
People say that governments cannot operate without secrecy...I call BULLSHIT...that is true only if their very souls are corrupt. We aren't talking about revealing troop positions here, we are talking about the fact that America has never really tried to protect its whistleblowers who expose corruption at the highest levels. Wikileaks provides that service.
All the politicians are cowards when the people demand that they confront the rich and powerful elite of the world that through their corporate entities engage in immoral behavior towards humanity in the name of CAPITALISM, FREEDOM TO MAKE UNLIMITED PROFITS, and DEMOCRACY FOR ALL CORPORATIONS.

Although im very sure what Mr Moore is doing is for a very good cause, I cant stop thinking hes also doing it for the spotlight.
Hes playing a double game and certainly I dont care if hes on the spotlight or not. At least, hes doing something about it.

Michael Moore and Julian Assange are for the people when governments and the media are not. They are demonized by the powers of the world who lie to and exploit the people and use us as pawns for their own gain and some of the lesser intelligent among us (e.g. Itsbatman_durr below) fall for it (sad, sad, sad). In propagating the propaganda vomited upon us, those ignorant among us demonstrate just how easily it is for people/sheep to be manipulated by the powers that be. Thank goodness for Moore and Assange and others. If the powers that be can't silence them, the ignorant will slowly awaken from their fog and they will finally see what is really going on.

And so what if everything you wrote is true? Assange still got bailed out. You think that now that he's bailed out, he's just going to fade away and Michael Moore can be in the spotlight again? That isn't how this works.
Nice score though.
