Bradley Manning's Health is Deteriorating

Image
jubal
As Julian Assange emerged from his nine-day imprisonment, there were renewed concerns about the physical and psychological health of Bradley Manning, the former US intelligence analyst suspected of leaking the diplomatic cables at the centre of the storm.

Manning, who was arrested seven months ago, is being held at a military base in Virginia and faces a court martial and up to 52 years in prison for his alleged role in copying the cables.

His friends and supporters also claim they have been the target of extra-judicial harassment, intimidation and outright bribery by US government agents.

According to David House, a computer researcher from Boston who visits Manning twice a month, he is starting to deteriorate. "Over the last few weeks I have noticed a steady decline in his mental and physical wellbeing," he said. "His prolonged confinement in a solitary holding cell is unquestionably taking its toll on his intellect; his inability to exercise due to [prison] regulations has affected his physical appearance in a manner that suggests physical weakness."

Manning, House added, was no longer the characteristically brilliant man he had been, despite efforts to keep him intellectually engaged. He also disputed the authorities' claims that Manning was being kept in solitary for his own good.

"I initially believed that his time in solitary confinement was a decision made in the interests of his safety," he said. "As time passed and his suicide watch was lifted, to no effect, it became clear that his time in solitary – and his lack of a pillow, sheets, the freedom to exercise, or the ability to view televised current events – were enacted as a means of punishment rather than a means of safety."

    • Watch "Restrepo" it will help you understand why people are upset and how ludicrous it is to believe you can achieve peace and democracy with bombs. It s a watch instantly on netflix. I urge those of you who feel this man should die to watch Restrepo objectively and come back with thoughts.

    • When I think of all the good people who are going to be murdered or, have already been murdered because of this traitor, I get depressed. There are so many good people who have put their lives and their family lives on the line and have been betrayed. Mothers and Fathers do not want their daughters to grow up and live life under the boot of taliban tyranny and due to this loser of a human, they will be killed for it. This "person" has dealt a serious blow against Freedom and people who are fighting to be Free.

here here my friend. this guy is every good soldiers worst nightmare. I can't imagine what he was thinking. But he knew what he was getting himself into so he deserves whatever he is going through now. It's not like the army doesn't warn analysts about what will happen to them if they conduct treasonous acts...

Explain how Manning's leaks were a danger to troops instead just of embarrassing to American Government. Please, because none of the information leaked was about troop positions or squad formations, which WOULD potentially get someone killed if given to the ENEMY and not the general populace.

    • A clear sign of a guilty conscience and malicious spirit . They are so hateful and embarrassed , they want him erased , and that is what is happening , slowly and surely . The Bradley Manning that stands trial , will NOT be the one who first was captured . He will be as they wish to portray him , Mad . Mad , as in not playing with a full deck . Part of me says " there has GOT to be something we can do " . I find it horrific that some here would condemn him to what they could not certainly stand themselves . He hasn't even been charged .... Is humanity so cheap ?

Are you familiar with the Nuremburg trials, hmm? In the grand scheme of things Nuremburg proved that any loyalty, oath, and duty that went against a persons and or groups human rights HAVE NOT A POT TO PISS IN!

Any officer regardless of rank must uphold the human rights of others before the orders of his superior officer. If the CO told a private to Kill and rape women and children. Two things can happen. He can say NO! and go to Leavenworth. or He can say yes and be prosecuted for being a vile rapist. the Judge will say: You knew that doing these things to women and children went against the Geneva Convention, You knew that this went against the conventions and laws held by the country of residence. Therefore yoiu should rot in prison, with your CO!

I used the extreme but it still stands, our countrymen have been told do things by Washington that are down right EVIL and it is the PRIME DIRECTIVE of every officer to Uphold the CONSTITUTION and its IDEALS and not the SLIMEBAG Orders of Sycophants and Charlatans fornication and wrapping themselves around the flag.

    • Hmm how about this:

Anyone seen the bourne movies? Or any of those types of spy thrillers, they usually follow a similar pattern. Anyway lets say the movie was redone to go with the patriotic sentiments:

Act 1. Jason Bourne goes all anti government, the chase begins

Act 2. 5 minutes into the chase Jason realizes he's a traitor gives up the chase quickly recites the pledge of allegiance, a tear rolls down his eye and he's rolled into some jail.

      Movie ends roll credits

      That movie would suck

My point is we cheer for this anti-hero, we cherish him/her/it because they reveal the truth. I assume a good amount of us grew up reading robin hood, books by George Orwell, Mark twain, Honore de Balzac, oscar wilde and a variety of philosophies including the the rights of man. How come these cherished values are so readily tossed away in the name of loyalty to the government? Have we lost our minds? In the past great people with dangerous ideas/techniques have been murdered in the name of national security, Socrates always comes to mind. I know we still mourn those losses and yet some of us seem to forget the lessons behind them.

    • Dismal. What's even more dismal than the inhumane conditions bradley is dealing with, are the people on this forum trying to rationalize the governments actions with bullshit like:
"Well he s a soldier he knew the rules he deserves it"
How blind can you be? This is seriously fucked up in your face human rights violations and there are actually tools out there who want to rationalize it. Fuck protecting the government, protect the people especially people like this man; who are sacrificing everything so that everyone, including the assholes can see the U.S. Government for what it is: a wolf in sheeps clothing. Go ahead sheep follow your fanged shepard.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
      and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
      and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

      Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."
      -Martin Niemöller

The assaults on Manning and Assange are assaults on the rights of the people. We deserve to know how our country runs, and the boneheaded mistakes they make. Democracies are made to be accountable to the public, not the other way around.

Wake up all you false-flag patriots, because in time you will outlive your purpose and they will take away all of your rights as well.

Why do you think that Manning was taken in? Because he released "secret documents"? NO! It was to teach anyone else who might be inspired to follow Manning's example: "We will take you in, and we will kill you, maim you, or make you suffer". He wasn't giving away troop positions; he was informing people of sensitive information the GOVERNMENT did want us to know. Embarrassing stuff that will make you question them and reconsider allowing those officials to continue leading.

I hope a thousand more Bradley Mannings pop up, each with more damning information that the next, maybe then this country will finally get it.

    • Anything longer than a month in solitary confinement does permanent damage to the human psyche and body.

News flash to the idiots saying it's whining, you wouldn't last three days in solitary. There's a reason that it's considered a punishment in prison.

When they say he can't exercise, they do not mean that people are stopping him. That means he's been shoved into a room the size of a broom closet and doesn't even have enough space to do anything.

Fuck this brouhaha culture in the United States. We're like a bunch of fucking gorillas in this country and we look more and more like an axis power every day. Grow up people, we're supposed to be the good guys.

I have lived in an isolated environment for five years due to security issues. Yet I still manage to function. I will admit a failure in certain emotional/mental functions due to this isolation and have reported it to my employer. Three days is a walk in the park., try 6 to 12 months at a time. I feel sorry, for Bradley, as he clearly appears to be cut from a more delicate cloth.

    • Here's what i get from this situation.
There's a whole bunch of people, and they claim to have the right to rule an even larger bunch of people. Now, this bunch of rulers (we'll call "A") likes to parlay 'secret' information with other people around the world who also believe they get to rule whole bunches of other people. 'A' people get to extort money/property, restrict movement and bodily freedom, and basically farm this other larger group that for some reason allows this. 'A' has legitimated this because the people that make it up are hand picked from the ruled larger group of people, somehow making being ruled ok.
One of these people revealed a bunch of embarrassing information about 'A', and 'A' is embarrassed and doesn't want it's legitimacy as rightful human farmers to be questioned.
So they freakout and basically torture another human, all the while invoking a mythology of 'nationalism', 'patriotism', and protecting 'A's' human cattle.

He may have had an idea of what was in them, but do you really think he went through the whole thing before he committed treason by giving these files to a foriegn entity with the express purpose of doing damage to the U.S.? Regardless of how you feel about the whole thing, this man willfully committed treason during war time, and should face a firing squad.

I feel sorry for Bradley, as I suspect that he was used by both Lamo and Julian. He seems to be a young man seeking friendship and recognition. He did however, make a terrible mistake at the encouragement of Lamo. Then for Lamo to pass the information to Wiki and then alert the FBI is unacceptable. Then clearly, Wiki (Julian), had no concerns about ruining this young man's life. You have two mature men that have ruined this young man's life and maybe even given him a death sentence to satisfy their own egos. Bradley is a victim and they are the predators. Thus, I have no respect for Julian or Lamo, as their sources should have been protected. Personally I hope both Lamo and Julian suffer the same fate as Bradley.

He has allegedly broken federal law, and has done so knowingly and willingly. He knew the consequences when he preformed his actions, and he still did it. Good for him. But don't expect to be treated any differently from any other criminal.

He isn't being treated like any other criminal. He hasn't had a trial whatsoever yet he is still in prison. Explain that MR Oath. Everyone he was involved in exposing swore an oath, why are they not in prison awaiting a trial?

    • He gets one hour per day out of the cell. This is usually reserved for exercise, is the article claiming that he is denied exercise during this period?

He is allowed to walk down a hallway during that hour. Other than that he is monitored by infrared camera to ensure he doesn't exercise. He's been denied sheets and a pillow case, not a blanket and pillow. You should read before you start spouting bullshit.

Well I should apologise for your particular insight. I have already stated that he had a blanket, and God forbid he had no pillow case, and why would an "infrared camera" be necessary to photograph a prisoner walking down the hall? But, I have yet to read any posts that describe what you are claiming. Prisoners held in isolation are typically allowed 1 hour per day for exercise, unless they have been unruly, which he has not. Missed your meds today didn't you?

Again, you need to read before spouting. The infrared camera is to monitor him while he's IN the cell to ensure he doesn't exercise for the 23 hours per day he's confined to it. It's not a secret, go read. Do you need me to get links for you? Here's a good one to start with www.google.com.

Yeah you fail at reading comprehension, must have been I missed my meds. Idiot.
