The only advantage that oil has is profits and volume. Every single day that this pipeline is delayed eats up profits and volume.
Delay long enough and there is no profit. Without profits, the dragon is dead.

JanforGore:
They will not build an oil pipeline if they can not make a profit from it.
If they can not sell their oil because most people are driving their cars with ethanol, biodiesel or compressed natural gas---there will be no profit in oil.
We need to demand that all new vehicles sold be biofuel and multi-fuel capable.
That can be done at very little cost, quickly, and with minimal disruption.
When consumers can choose to drive their vehicles with petoleum, some petroleum, or not petroleum at all-----oil will no longer hold the world hostage to its monopoly.

We need a law that any manufacturer who wants to sell cars in the US must make them multifuel capable.

Unfortunately we don't have enough time to get the supporters of the Northern Gateway Pipeline to understand.
Even if we did, it wouldn't matter, it would be built anyway. If you wave enough money in someone's face, they'll do anything for you. - 1 year ago

No worries! I feel that way most of the time and I have to remind myself to just keep trying to gently raise awareness. Actual protest of this pipeline may be dangerous due to the conservative pro-corporate agenda being played out in North America. Good way to be put on a list.

Actually, there is reason to be hopeful. There are two major lawsuits against the Canadian government for the land rights of Aboriginal people, because the proposed line passes through the supposedly protected land of about 70 Aboriginal groups (don't quote me on the number, it's a vague guess, but there are definitely a lot of groups involved). If they are successful, it'd prevent the line from going through.
I'll look up the lawsuits and add the info.

Ok, I just looked it up. It's actually only one group, the Beaver Lake Cree who are taking legal action against the government. Though at a conference I went to earlier this year, one of the speakers talked about how the pipeline will go through many group's territory. The second major lawsuit is against a mining operation in BC. You can check out the organization that supports both lawsuits here http://www.raventrust.com/

Then buy a vehicle that you can drive that does not use oil---we have them and they are on the road now and have been for years.
A flex fuel vehicle costs the same as a conventional petroleum only vehicle---and use E85 whenever you can. When you can not use E85---you can always use gasoline. When more and more people use E85, we'll use less and less petroleum.
Buy a diesel vehicle and use biodiesel. It gets better mileage by far than gasoline(about the same as a hybrid). And it can use biodiesel with no modification in any mixture up to B100(100% bio). And a diesel costs about the same or less and will last a LOT longer than a hybrid.
Or, get a vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas. VW makes several models including the EcoFuel that is a very powerful and sporty model. VWs are bi-fuel engines that can use either gasoline or compressed natural gas whichever is available at the flip of a switch. It costs about 1/2 to drive the same distance using CNG compared to what it does using gasoline. And if all vehicles on the road used natural gas instead of gasoline, driving exactly the same as we do now----the CO2 produced would be the equivalent of taking every third vehicle off the road.
Make it known to lawmakers at every level of government that every vehicle sold needs to be multifuel capable. And don't quit telling them until they do it.

Why be gentle? Are Glenn Beck, Rupert Murdock, Bill O'Reilly and the rest of the corporate stooges being gentle?
I say, hit 'em where it hurts 'em the most, right in the wallet.
Let them end up in the poor house investing in petroleum stocks. I think it would be a good place for them.

Hit them in the wallet you say. Why be gentle? So people take time to listen instead of just tuning us out. I am already living well under the poverty line. If the economy tightens any more, I will be giving up the internet. By the way, in Oregon the bastards have increased the price of diesel. It has been running .50 cents higher then gas per gallon. It was up to 5.25 when unleaded hit 4 dollars.

This would be such a disaster.. I hope it can be stopped. I just kayaked with 3 friends through this amazing area earlier this year.. Weather forced us to detour to Hartley Bay and they were so friendly we ended up camped under their picnic pavilion right in the middle of town. When we visited Bella Bella we talked with a large group who were waiting for a boat to join a large protest of Endridge's planned pipeline at Kitimat

Depends on who you ask. We surely do not need to be using the amount that we are currently consuming. Furthermore, Oil can be extracted with much less environmental impact, but it would not be AS profitable. If capitalism was not so destructive, it would solidly invest its profits for a clean energy future. We must band together for a future not driven by blind consumption; creating poisoned peoples.

I think the worst thing is that the Canadian government is actively lobbying against legislation that'd threaten oil consumption from our tar sands in other countries. Not only is our government failing miserably at any form of environmental policies or awareness in our own country, but they're also screwing things up in other countries. Oh Canada.
