While the dangerous carcinogen, otherwise known as chromium-6, may sound foreign to most people, perhaps the name Erin Brockovich will ring a bell....
==========
"Bottled water is not necessarily any safer than tap water," said Sutton. "We just don't have any guarantee that hexavalent chromium isn't in that water."
===========
"The National Toxicology Program has said that chromium-6 in drinking water shows "clear evidence of carcinogenic activity."

I live in Riverside Ca, one of the highest concentrations, and I always said my tap water is poison. The taste is horrible to say the least, never thought it was because of a known carcinogen.
To all of those who believe the levels are too low to cause harm...think AGAIN!!! You not only drink the water from the tap but bathe in it, use it for cooking, washing clothes. This chemical is prevalent throughout everyday activities. That's just one exposure of one carcinogen, youthink you won't develop cancer after flouride, second hand smoke, food preservative, microwaves on top of that too?! And when cooking is the chemical compound changed for better/worse? I guess our guinea pig asses are gonna find out!

So are we all going to die from our drinking water? No... Even if you look at the kexavalent chromium case from the city Hickley (as seen in the film Erin Brockovich) in which PG&E paid the largest settlement ever paid in a direct settlement lawsuit, the actual cancer rates have not risen in the town. I fully support PG&E getting sued and having to continue to pay for the clean up. Nor am I arguing that Hexavalent Chromium is not a known carcinogen. However, the chance of you dying from municipal water is statistically non-existent.
If we did not have public water, the numbers of people dying would be catastrophic. Water born illnesses kill a shocking number of people each year globally (I've seen estimates at high as 2.4 billion people at risk). Having seen it first hand, what contaminated water supplies will do to men, women, and children, I can honestly boast our water system is fantastic compared to the global norm. I am not saying that people should not be concerned nor should polluters not be heavily punished...but lets keep it in somewhat of a rational perspective.

Yup, never liked the taste of tap water in my metropolis. The sad thing is that if you live near a source of water, the contaminants are closer to you; thanks to local factories and faulty chemical regulations.

i live in pennsylvania, and i dont know if this has anything to do with this particular contamenant or that shale fracking process that ive been reading about... i remember like 4 or 5 summers ago i would come i on hot day an drink water right from the tap an it was very tasty as far as water goes. since then ive noticed a gradual decline in the quality of my drinking water and its developed a noticable taste that is almost metallic like. even after its run through a brita water filter its still funky. i havent gotten sick or anything, but i get the feeling id get an upset stomach if i drink too much of it. its not like its only my house either, same problem at other houses. its really depressing when i think about how much i used to love water and now i can i only enjoy it when it comes out of a plastic bottle.

What do you mean by "water store"... some special storage, or do you mean bottled water. You did see all the references to how bottled water is not exempt, yes?

no. not bottled water or storage, it's a store that sells water. they filter it something like seven different ways. and the proprietor is a good friend. i pay about 25 cents per gallon for amazingly clean water. it's made a huge difference in my general health and even my attitude. i have a bunch of the old glass 5 gallon bottles.
